Montreal makes a really good "smoke meat" one where they have cubes of brisket/smoked meat in the poutine. It's crazy good on a cold, snowy night! Don't eat the shit from Burger King, KFC or somewhere...that's not poutine...like eating processed cheese and calling it gruyere! Cheers! Reuben’s pretty much anything on the menu is insane.

I like thicker fries, but the cheese curds look good and not too much gravy. Hey, you need sauerkraut on that sandwich! Cheers!

Saluki Posted March 31 Posted March 31 It's good that there is a Canada topic because there is an issue that I thought deserved its own post, but this is as good a place as any. There is a discrepancy between how R&D spend is treated if you are a private company vs a publicly listed company. It's much better for private companies. A bill that is working its way through parliament, which Carney supports, would give public companies the same treatment, and allow them a generous tax credit on R&D. That should help a lot of small Canadian public companies who have large R&D relative to their income. Kraken Robotics comes to mind, but they just acquired a US Company that will triple their size, so a tax credit ($6mm?) won't move the needle on a $2bln (now) company after the acquisition which will make them much larger, especially if the R&D is outside of Canada. Tantalus (smart meters for utilities) which I don't own and Progressive Planet (which just built a new pilot plant for PozGlass) are both very small, so several millions in a tax credit will really make the stock pop (hopefully). Can you think of other small cap Canadian companies that have a large R&D spend relative to their marketcap that would benefit if this bill becomes law?

Yes, poutine is the hangover cure for me at 1am in Quebec. Everywhere else it is a Filet-o-Fish! Or breakfast at a 24-hour diner with eggs at 4am! Used to be anyways...can't do that anymore at my age. Cheers!

In my 20's and 30's...no problem eating two Whoppers. In my 50's, lucky if I can finish a Jr. Whopper and small coke! These days it's hitting Happy Hours every other day finishing up errands, getting a nice discount on a glass of good chardonnay, and maybe a smoke salmon appetizer. Jr. Whopper is usually when I'm with the niece and nephew after soccer/hockey games! Cheers!
Parsad Posted March 31 Author Posted March 31 By the way, in terms of fast food poutine...there is actually one that is ok for a fast food joint. NY Fries poutines aren't bad...they make good fries for their poutine. On top of that, Fairfax through Recipe owns NY Fries! It's the only fast food poutine I will eat once in a while at the mall. Cheers!
Spooky Posted April 1 Posted April 1 (edited) Best poutine for me is just the classic fries, cheese curds + gravy, forget the other toppings. Quebec does it the best for sure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVmPjYEus2g&list=RDxVmPjYEus2g&start_radio=1 Edited April 1 by Spooky
Libs Posted April 1 Posted April 1 Hilarious thread now that it's degenerated into food......so at age 25, in 1985, Chubb Ins. transferred me from Irvine CA to Montreal. In week 1, out with my new co-workers, I see the french / english menu at a restaurant and, confused, exclaim, 'I'll have the chicken poulet." IOW, chicken / chicken. Took me two years to live that down. I will say this - living in Montreal opened my eyes to how fat Americans are. They would visit from NY and be drunk, belligerent, and overweight. Yikes.

Interesting, I didn't know there was a difference. When I was there working at a small private company the CEO and CFO had me talk with some Tax folks about this, trying to convince them that we were doing research related things, I guess this is what it was for, but a long long time ago so possibly different. Weird that they only allowed it for privates. I wonder if Vancouver still has a huge tax incentive for filming. I remember the LA folks hated them for that.

Yes, the tax credit still exists, but when Trump threatened tariffs against productions made in Canada, a lot of business went back to the U.S. It's still steady here in terms of productions and shoots, but nothing like the heyday of movies and studio business. It's kind of like the streaming giants filled some of the movie/studio work that left with television productions they developed...so it's stayed sort of even. But fewer big/studio movies are being produced here now. Cheers!
bizaro86 Posted April 6 Posted April 6 CEO of Air Canada pushed into resigning for offering condolences about their recent fatal accident at LGA only in English. There were French subtitles, but since he didn't speak in French it's unacceptable.

Hmmm...it would have been stupid and an over-reaction in almost any situation...except he promised to learn French and make it better nearly four years ago. So it's his fault...couldn't find the time to fulfill his own promise. Cheers!

And I think earlier in the past he also pushed back about learning French, saying he got by living in Montreal for many years in English only and it worked just fine. May have benefited from a bit more public relations guidance.

May have benefited from a bit more public relations guidance. How hard is it to actually learn French! Go live in Quebec City or a smaller city in France for 3 months and you'll be pretty conversant! Use it every day when you are there and it is easy to pick up if you've already learned the basics in high school or university. I loved using my French every day in Paris last year...wherever I could, I would try and use it, get better, learn more...it was wonderful! Still at an intermediate level, but I had some very nice French conversations with people, including a taxi driver from Senegal...we talked about his family, wife and children...their lives in France since he came over 20 years ago...I introduced my family. The CEO of Air Canada lives in a bilingual country...working for "Air Canada"...every single hostess has to give instructions for the flight in French and most are bilingual in multiple different languages...he has no real excuse if he promised to learn. I plan on going back to France next year, and maybe even going to Quebec City for Christmas this year! Cheers!

The CEO should spend their time running it, not learning a new language.

Although, I would imagine there might have been a requirement for him to be bilingual when he was hired. And c'mon...Air Canada...his French should be at least as good as Carney's! Even Harper learned after age 40 and was quite fluent! Cheers!
Lazarus Posted April 6 Posted April 6 He should have at least had the political acumen to provide his statement in French, since both deceased pilots were francophones out of Montreal. Especially after he was raked across the coals previously for not speaking French. Even if his French is atrocious he should be able to muster a canned statement.

Gamecock-YT Posted April 7 Posted April 7 Same reason the Montreal Canadiens haven't made any noise in the sport of hockey since they last won the cup. Notice, they've started having success recently: who do they have at the top of the club now? A unilingual anglophone. Guess we can look forward to him getting shown the door at the first sign of controversy.
shru Posted April 7 Posted April 7 Seems like a good primer of what has happened till now. Hope better times will be coming:
