Putin called their bluff - and now, millions of lives destroyed and a country destroyed. Not to worry - Trump will do his best to clean up your mess. It was European nations that blocked Ukraine’s aspirations of NATO - multiple times. In 2008, 2014 and before the Russian invasion, precisely because they didn’t want to give Putin a reason to go to war. So what the hell are you talking about @cubsfan? Can you please do the very minimum research please? Again you can find this out with one google search. Edited March 19, 2025 by Sweet

cwericb Posted March 19, 2025 Posted March 19, 2025 (edited) Not sure of your point. But this crap about the poor United States being taken advantage of by Canada, by The Ukraine, by Europe, and the by whole ROW is really, really getting tired. Are we all supposed to feel sorry for the US, is that the point? It seems that every freaking night your great leader is going on and on crying about how somebody has treated the US so horribly. Everyone has taken advantage of the of the poor US. I, as have many Canadians, have always held the US in very high regard. But now with Trump acting like the biggest crybaby in history going on and on about how every country on earth has been taking advantage of the US, I mean it is getting embarrassing just to listen to all this BS. Can't you guys just suck it up and shut up? I realize that this is primarily the Trump cult that has this "poor us" attitude, but nearly all Canadians have great American friends but you guys on the far right and your deranged leader are really becoming an embarrassment to your country. Spekulatius Posted March 19, 2025 Posted March 19, 2025 One way to make America greet again is by belittling every other country, in Trumps thinking. Remember, with Trump, everything is personal.

But you should know it was European countries who blocked it several times if you are going to be a loud mouth troll.

Is it bringing back manufacturing to the US? Is it making Canada the 51st state? Don't even think you guys know the reason....
rogermunibond Posted March 19, 2025 Posted March 19, 2025 (edited) @Spooky Fentanyl and immigration are the legal reasons - to use emergency powers - a ruse Manufacturing and trade deficit are economic reasons 51st State BS + Greenland are geopolitical strategic reasons - viz a viz US concerns with Arctic resource grab post 2050 with Russia already possessing much better land assets around the Arctic. The President and his advisors have turned this into an incomprehensible mish-mash of blurbs and miscommunication. Edited March 19, 2025 by rogermunibond
Spekulatius Posted March 19, 2025 Posted March 19, 2025 (edited) Reciprocal tariffs don’t solve the trade deficit. The overall tariff rate in the EU for exampleis quite low - just a few % which is probably less than the US at this point. Sticking points are probably agricultural goods where the EU has profit in a just like pretty much any other country. I think there is going to be a while lotmof other stuff thrown in the trade arena. Edited March 19, 2025 by Spekulatius

A total disaster, everyone was asleep. A total sweep of all Russian troops and hardware outside Russia should have been carried out in the first few weeks after it started. And it would actually have been quite easy to do from the air. Easy to say John. You always would have that nuclear cloud hanging over your head. No telling what Putin might do. The real crime is not settling this 2 years ago, when the tide turned against Ukraine. But with a chump like Biden leading the way against peace - there was no chance.
Spooky Posted March 19, 2025 Posted March 19, 2025 This is a real message from the President of the United States: “Based on Ontario, Canada, placing a 25% Tariff on “Electricity” coming into the United States, I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA, ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. This will go into effect TOMORROW MORNING, March 12th. Also, Canada must immediately drop their Anti-American Farmer Tariff of 250% to 390% on various US dairy products, which has long been considered outrageous. I will shortly be declaring a National Emergency on Electricity within the threatened area. This will allow the US to quickly do what has to be done to alleviate this abusive threat from Canada. If other egregious, long time Tariffs are not likewise dropped by Canada, I will substantially increase, on April 2nd, the Tariffs on Cars coming into the US which will, essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada. Those cars can easily be made in the USA! Also, Canada pays very little for National Security, relying on the United States for military protection. We are subsidizing Canada to the tune of more than 200 Billion Dollars a year. WHY??? This cannot continue. The only thing that makes sense is for Canada to become our cherished Fifty First State. This would make all Tariffs, and everything else, totally disappear. Canadians’ taxes will be very substantially reduced, they will be more secure, militarily and otherwise, than ever before, there would no longer be a Northern Border problem, and the greatest and most powerful nation in the World will be bigger, better and stronger than ever — And Canada will be a big part of that. The artificial line of separation drawn many years ago will finally disappear, and we will have the safest and most beautiful Nation anywhere in the World — And your brilliant anthem, “O Canada,” will continue to play, but now representing a GREAT and POWERFUL STATE within the greatest Nation that the World has ever seen!” President Trump, Truth Social, March 11, 2025
rogermunibond Posted March 19, 2025 Posted March 19, 2025 @Spekulatius just to be clear, by deficit, I mean the Federal budget deficit. Not trade.

Yeah, really, not much question about the direction of the country now. After 4 years of self-destruction under Biden - there is a huge sea change. Trump always wants fast, fast progress - so not quite satisfied. And to watch the oppostion party melt down is truly a thing of beauty. They have no idea what to do. They don't want criminals deported, they want men in the locker rooms with young girls, they want sex changes for prisoners - Democrats have truly lost their minds. Best of all - they've lost the American people. It really is wonderful. To think these morons had 300M+ people to choose from and all the political power - and the best they could do was Biden or Harris for their leadership. It's really astonishing. They served up the election to Trump on a silver platter.

Just to set the record straight, any tariff on dairy charged by Canada was A) approved, signed and AGREED to, by no less than Donald J Trump. And B) Canada has NEVER applied tariffs of 250% or anything like that. Simply one more bold faced lie by Trump swallowed whole by the cult. PS. The value of American dairy exports to Canada totalled more than US$1 billion last year — nearly triple what Canada sold to the U.S. in 2024. Edited March 19, 2025 by cwericb

How does it play out when the Chinese government stimulates their economy, i.e. provides money to factories like this to produce at or below cost cars, and then floods international markets with them? What happens our factories, our companies, our jobs? I can’t believe that a car company with a net profit of $1.6 bn can produce something like this without massive government support. Americans do not have to buy those cheap goods, and are not prevented from coming up with better competing product. However, that competing US product will be built primarily by robot, and there just will not be as much labour required. SD

SD They don’t, but many will, and the job of the government is to decide whether they should - in terms of national security, whether trade is fair, the effects it might have on society etc. This normally goes against what I would naturally believe, but this appears to me to be a concerted effort to undermine the ordinary function of free markets, to bankrupt foreign competitors through anti/competition practices, and I feel it is a national security issues to have the factories concentrated in one country.
