  1. 1. I bought my first share 29 years ago (1996) and have been a shareholder ever since, curious how long others in the foum have been continuous shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway. Polling closes Feb 28, 2025.

I checked my spouse's acct.  Apparently she bought twice, 2020 and 2022.  Not sure if I did anything to prompt the purchase.

Mine was 2017.

But could have been earlier, we both did some portfolio restructuring around that time to optimize for taxes.  If it was earlier, probably not much earlier.

2002 in a former investco, then 2011 in personal accounts.  First company I really had confidence in buying on the way up.  Prior to a large position in BRK,it was mainly industrial cigar buts, and prior to the cigar buts I really had NFI.  The evolution in thinking, to buy what you know and take advantage of periods of undervaluation and be wary but not afraid of concentration, was among the best lessons I have learnt. Thanks W & C.

Looking it up I see I started purchasing BRK in 2008. Good thing I checked because my memory thought earlier.

I have been adding continuously. I always have some open put positions I have written. When put to I sometimes keep the shares and sometimes I write covered calls on them.

My lowest purchase price was $60.24.

First purchase in 1999 at what turned out to be close to a several year all time high.

Those initial shares still provided a 9% CAGR. Thanks to folks like @dealraker I learned to just keep buying every time it got cheap over the next 20+ years.

Sometime around 2002 or 2003.  I've never not been a shareholder since then, but I haven't always had a large position.   It is where I have parked cash that I have no other ideas for.

Shareholder since 2002. Added several times since then, and sold a tiny bit  for the first time in 22 years (excluding gifts) last year.

Yes, it has been a good investment but more importantly I learned everything I know about business & finance from Munger & Buffett. Also so many life lessons! Became a Munger groupie (I live in CA so it was relatively easy to attend practically every public event with Charlie since 2000). Spoke to Charlie a couple of times about everything under the sun. That was the "Road to Damascus" moment for me. He is my "guru".

I guess you mean 2007

Nope. And I just checked, Brk class b shares were in the 160s range in May 2017. I wish I purchased in 2007 🤣

I suspect you are confusing this with the fairfax thread haha

It's interesting to look back on a b-share chart and see what looks like a "Fairfax-like" long flat period around my early ownership period.  I don't remember it feeling like "7 lean years" at the time - but we were getting great news out of Berkshire and there were plenty of opportunities to buy more stock.  Plus I was young and poor so I didn't want the price to do well just yet.

The "big drop" that I used to buy the majority of my Berkshire position, the market re-opening after the World Trade Center attacks, barely even shows up on this chart as a blip.  I think it fell down to $1900 or $2000 per B-share that week.  We got a few more opportunities at that price and a near-round-trip at the lows of the financial crisis in '09.

I guess these numbers get multiplied by 50 to get the old b-share price equivalents.
