"Many cities, particularly in Canada and some US states, have anti-idling bylaws limiting how long a vehicle can be left running when not in motion, with common limits of one to five minutes, though some areas are stricter or focus on specific vehicle types or durations. Examples of cities with these regulations include Toronto, Vancouver, Kelowna, and Edmonton in Canada, and some municipalities in states like Wyoming and Colorado in the US" "Cities in Asia where idling is restricted include Hong Kong, Tokyo (Japan), and Singapore, with other cities like Manila, Seoul, and Taipei also having anti-idling measures in place." "(England, Scotland, Wales), have implemented regulations and fines for unnecessary vehicle idling." Ok you enlightened me about the extent to which these type of laws have been implemented. I am actually not surprised though. I had hoped to show that despite the best efforts, the most valiant efforts, even dutiful or coerced citizens freezing their asses off in the developed world, the march of global carbon emissions continues higher. I hope you can see the futility in these do-gooder laws, which have no global impact. So when I say wrong, I mean in that sense. Not in the sense that there are other silly politicians besides those in Ottawa.

Well I am not going to get into an extended debate about air pollution caused by excessive idling and the harmful effects it produces. However, I would not suggest trying to disprove this while sitting in your car, in your garage with the engine running.

Eric Adams is mired in corruption, plain and simple. Cuomo looks and talks like a James Bond villain. It is interesting that he calls Zohran “rich” because he makes $200K with his wife and lives in $2K rent controlled apartment while he himself married into the Kennedy clan and rents a place for $8K. Many of Trump's ideas make a lot of sense - stopping illegal immigration, US should not pay 5x more for medicine than France, etc.... Essentially all of Mamdani's ideas are insane and counter-productive: $30 minimum wage, abolishing specialized high schools, gutting police budget and not prosecuting crimes like assault, freezing rents, etc..

If you're a New Yorker who doesn't make a lot of money and are struggling to get by in the city a lot of those ideas are going to be appealing. I agree they're stupid but it's easy to appeal to people who feel they're being left behind and are willing to cling to someone who talks a good game of hope even if theyre an iincompetent moron. Same goes with Trump.

In the case of Ukraine - Russia I do think it ends via negotiations but most major wars in the last 100+ years haven’t ended that way.
John Hjorth Posted August 25, 2025 Posted August 25, 2025 (edited) @cwericb & @whiskybravo, Not to sound as if I'm trying to ridicule any of you, or to sound condescending, but actually I chuckle a bit over your exchange above. You got to the same conclusion above, as I did earlier. I think it was in connection with the 2016 US Presidential Election that I learned that talking about such stuff makes CofB&F go crazy, .... it almost explodes when it happens. - It's just such a no-go! . Same goes with totally no-go 'gl**al wa**ing'! - - - o 0 o - - - Now there are shades to everything, and nuances ..., - i.e. POTUS is now becoming an environmentalist, you see, wind turbines kills US birds, and off-shore wind is an absolutely no-go, because they are making so much noise, so that all those poor whales living in surrounding waters haven't any arms with hands to hold for their ears, so they get so distracted that they strand! Both endlessly make fun of Trump, don't believe much if anything he says, and often think he does dumb shit endlessly. They absolutely do not think he is emotionally stable. At the same time they think anyone not "all in" with Trump should pack up and leave the country. So their "approval" rating of Trump is low - but it is also meaningless. You don't have to be in the "approval" camp nor the believing camp to vote and support Trump because the acceptable options to him do not exist. I despise Trump and think he's accomplishing about 1/2 of 1% of what he claims, yet my mountain biking friend and his wife - who have a lake home close to ours - are our (Angela and me) activity friends and we go about with ease and political discussion is both comfortable and fun for us. The one thing we all four agree on above all? Not directly related to Trump at all: the options to Trump are pathetic. Trump would win the presidential election with a zero approval rating today in my opinion. Yup, that's the problem. Many people don't want Trump as POTUS, but the alternatives the Democrats and Republicans are serving up aren't viable options. A healthy Biden might have won again, but instead Harris was the choice. I suspect if the Democrats fielded a centrist or center-left candidate that was young and healthy, they would have won. Until the Dems find that candidate, Trump and his team will continue to run the Whitehouse. Cheers!

whiskybravo Posted August 26, 2025 Posted August 26, 2025 (edited) I think the only real point I was trying to make got lost in the shuffle, which is just the futility of these kinds of local laws when the rest of the world’s emissions keep climbing. I know these by-laws are well-meaning and increasingly common, but in the big picture, they feel more symbolic than impactful. I get the feeling some of our past exchanges might still be lingering. Probably added a bit of static between us. Anyway, not trying to needle anyone here, just making a broader point about scale and effectiveness. Edited August 26, 2025 by whiskybravo

Agree that some minor measures have little impact by themselves, but every little bit helps and you have to start somewhere. Not sure what part of the States you are in, but up here in "the Frozen North" (Atlantic Canada), when it is very cold with no wind, and a lot of cars and trucks are sitting the air can get pretty fumey. It is the people who think climate change is a hoax that get under my skin. The causes and remedies may be open to question, but the fact that we are seeing significant evidence of changes is undeniable.

Current betting odds seem to be favoring Newsom or AOC. Neither of which is likely to be popular with the marginal voter who want a centrist candidate.

Gregmal Posted August 26, 2025 Posted August 26, 2025 So this whole Fed saga has been hilarious. For 3 years these guys have been making up excuses to be scared of the inflation they spent the previous two denying. Now they continue to play politics and cost Americans via higher rates just continuously making up new “future” concerns about inflation, that not surprisingly, never come to fruition. So Trump fires one of the incompetents. The MSM and TDS haters obviously are indifferent to incompetence and instead claim to value “independence”. Independence from politics is important they claim. So this clown gets canned, and what does she do? Hire the Democrats A list of PR and legal representation….again making a mockery of the “independent” claims.

If this lady cook has broken the law then she deserves to go. If she didn’t then not fair to fire her. Be better if the media spent their time investigating this allegation rather than hyping up the racial angle or fed independence.

He fired a fraudster - someone in a position that should be beyond reproach on the Fed. This is no ordinary position - this is like the teacher that has sex with your kids. You are in a trusted position and have a moral obligation to set an example. I can imagine young couples looking for a mortage: " Hey, if she can cheat for a lower rate, I guess it's not a big deal, why can't we"
Gregmal Posted August 26, 2025 Posted August 26, 2025 Well, that is ironic. That she gets to benefit from low rates..... But, hey, at least we now have Hunter Biden's legal team defending the "independence" of the Fed LMFAO

You of course follow whatever Trump tells you to, so you claim guilt without there even being a charge. Thats cult behavior. Trump on the other hand was found guilty of mortgage fraud.
