@willypoo

If you are buying Aecon, particularly in size, you may want to reference the stockhouse boards - there some great commentary there on following the business. I can DM you the details if you'd like.

@LC Much appreciated.

I started following the stockhouse board last month and have been absorbing all the valuable information there.
Have been in Aecon since September 2024 (a tad late), and tripled my holdings this week.

It is a very large position for me now.

Is that a decent investing discussion space?  Or only for narrow sector or stock dependent?

I have not looked too deeply outside the Aecon section but on the whole, my impression is that this board has better discussion. This corner of berkshire and fairfax is a  special place 😄

HII is just a glorified welding shop that happens to produce ships and submarines for the Navy.

Its not a well run shop either.

Seems DOGE is getting ideas from this board:

I'm sure that approach will work great in the vast expanses of the Pacific Ocean when China employs A2/AD around Taiwan.

Marine Grunt:  Where's our air support?

Tech Bro Call Center:  Sorry bro, those drones ran out of juice and fell into the ocean 1000 klicks to your west.  Good luck.

Chamath just embarrasses himself….” Blanket the world with drones”. WTH?

Time for quick take from Ackman…

You are already seeing the future of warfare to some extent in Ukraine. Lots of drones, even with some autonomous piloting. I don't think the wars of the future look like the wars of the past.

Elon might not be far off...

There is clear case to make for drones in the future of warfare - in that sense I agree with Elon.  The experience in Ukraine highlights the impact of small drones around the line of contact and in the rear.  But a majority of infantry casualties suffered by the Russians are not caused by drones, they are caused by DPCIM 155m rounds.  And the naval drones are operating in the space of a green water navy, not a blue water navy.

The future of warfare is likely a combination of manned vessels/vehicles, wingman-like drones operating from the manned vessels/vehicles, autonomous longer-range drones for ISR and A2/AD, and grunts that hold a position.  I wonder if  electronic warfare capabilities keep up with drone tech.

I've been looking for reasonable investments in companies that make high-powered lasers for ships, vehicles, and air defense.  With the proliferation of drones and the cost of missiles, I think we will see a move towards lasers which may be more effective at dealing with large volumes of drones.

Looking at the proliferation of wire guided drones of late in Ukraine, I think we're seeing electronic warfare capabilities hold pace with advancements in drone tech fairly well. Operators on both sides of the conflict in areas where EW is heavily deployed are basically back to using a TOW missile with far better optics, longer range, and much longer duration. Wire guided drones are also utilized in heavy bomber roles at night and to place anti-tank mines near the front. But with a range of 15km or so max, it's unlikely to be a tech that fits in in deterring an invasion of Taiwan.

Furthermore, since a lot of the jammers utilized by both sides are off the shelf products sold on Alibaba, I'd wager China is well aware of the threat FPV style drones pose and has capabilities in place to jam them.

For systems that likely will see a major role in a potential Taiwan conflict check out Rapid Dragon and Quicksink, both are a sort of value approach to legacy systems that make them very relevant in the Pacific.

@rogermunibond I am always interested when great companies like Nike or Hershey go through hard times and the stocks lose half of their value.  Are they permanently impaired? Why have they stumbled? Can they repair themselves? When? Are the problems systemic, secular, operational etc..... My guess is that NKE and HSY are still good/great businesses. DIS is probably a less good business than 10 years ago so may be formerly great. Hill has not really had a chance to impact the business yet but we will see what he can do in the next 12 months.  Even though they have let some competition spring up, I don't think the brand is damaged.  The stock is at least partially de-risked at 70.  Turnarounds rarely work but Hill doesn't need to reinvent the wheel here. If he just gets back to basics, business will improve. I am conveniently skipping macro issues like tariffs and China retaliation at my peril.

Bought SKX … weakness in China taking stock lower. I love the story though over next 5-10 years. And it’s trading cheaply for the growth. They have surprising strength in India…
