Hasn’t crime dropped in D.C.?  Why isn’t that considered important.

If u flood a city with soldiers of course its going to drop - while theyre there. If you want long term, sustained improvement in crime it doesnt take a genius to understand this is doing nothing. Crime had been dropping for years already.

And why not in cities with higher crime rates?

I already answered this but also probably because Chicago has the highest gang occupancy of any major US city. If you want to kill the snake you cut off the head...

So you think the soldiers are going to Washington Park area. Or anywhere in South Chicago???  No way. They dont get media coverage there. It will be like Washington DC where they patrol the high tourist, low crime areas with the highest visibility.

Why?  Because its not about reducing crime. Its about theater.

DC is a special case though right?  It’s a federal city.  Not saying you were, but it wasn’t too long ago that defunding the police was a thing.  Preferably cops police for sure, but that’s the opposite from defund the po po.

I actually don't think this is a good talking point in that if I were in charge of securing a city / rooting out all crime, I'd probably start by having zero tolerance in the lower crime / tourist areas and then push into the high crime areas rather than vice versa.

also it would theoretically have the most immediate positive impact on DC economy to make the high tourist areas / areas with high economic activity better first. no one does anything but live in anacostia. decreasing crime in anacostia would obviously be far more impactful since that's where a lot of the bad stuff happens, but no one from elsewhere goes to work there or on vacation there or out to dinner there.

removing the idea of whether or not its justified from consideration, the approach of showing up in force in the visibile relatively secure areas and then projecting power from there makes sense to me.

You asked "Why Chicago" I answered....The plan (if carried out) is up to the professionals....

Well this is correct. If you actually want to reduce crime you do what you and Costanza suggest - fund coordinated efforts with local and federal agencies long term.  Putting soldiers in public areas for 3 weeks is a complete waste of tax money.

That would be true if it was long term, coordinated and done by police.  You have better on the ground visibility, but all I've seen from local restaurants and businesses is complaints that having soldiers walking around with guns is not helping pedestrian tourism.

Either way, what happens after 3 weeks when they leave?

This is always where things end up. No matter how much is explained to them, it always ends up going back to “where’s the fentanyl”,“please explain to me”, “it’s a cult” and “Chicago and LA are doing great”…

Who's shifting goal posts?  The entire time I have consistently pointed out that this is just theater and not effective or efficient crime reduction.  On our tax dollars

Your skills at hyperbole are astounding. Not once have i said a single one of those things in this discussion.  Stick to the current topic my friend.

You asked "Why Chicago" I answered "Because it has the highest gang inhabitant of any major US city." Then you said "wAShIntOn ParK?!?!" "tHEatERRR!!! "

Last time I looked the country is pretty evenly divided politically yet you talk as if you're speaking for everyone and that everyone shares the same opinion. I'm sure there are plenty of people in Chicago who welcome the additional help from the Nat Guard or Federal Agencies. Probably the same ones that had their businesses burned and looted during the Summer of Love....It's politics...there is ALWAYS some theater to it....Politicians will use the National Guard for theater the same way the Mayor will use some small local non-profit he threw a little cash at for a press conference theater....same shit different politician different organization.

Stop trying to oversimplify issues when it's inconvenient to your personal biases and opinions.

Soldiers enforcing laws over the objection of local officials and population in a performative effort for a couple of weeks in selective locations is definitely a waste of tax payer money

If this was about dealing with gangs, Washington DC would not have been the first city.  And using uniformed military in the most public places is not doing anything to deal with gangs.

Is there really anyone who truly believes that if you had $20m to spend on urban crime reduction, the best way to do that would be to send troops into highly touristed areas for a couple of weeks?  Honestly?

Ive said in this thread multiple times that one of the policies of Trump i supported.was reducing waste!  And I've also said that the way he has done it is the most incompetent and ineffective you could imagine.  This Nationsl Guard deployment for public theater is the perfect case in point.

If you have all the answers perhaps you should run for office?

The Independent [September 2nd 2025] : Trump responds to viral rumour claiming he's dead

POTUS' comments aren't even unreasonable here, it's been long Labour Day weekend. In fact it's ridiculous, and it's actually disgusting, malicious, mean, evil talk. Race to the bottom continues. Anyone talking similar to that to me in my own house gets thrown out, immediately.
