Parsad Posted August 18, 2025 Posted August 18, 2025 36 minutes ago, Sweet said: Russia and the US have opposing world views and spheres of influence and naturally butt heads. The way for that relationship to significantly improve it would require one or both to seriously diminish in power, or if Russia becomes more democratic and Western orientated. Both seem unlikely. It seems to me to be a bit like hoping the Israelis and Palestinians would just be productive friends. +1! Cheers!

You are not dealing in reality @John Hjorth Putin already has Crimea, Donbas, etc -- given that is the case, he's not handing over ANYTHING - now you have to take if from him by force. Time for you to get in the real world - because those territories are his now.

You say ‘wrong, totally wrong’ but what you wrote is kinda the point I’m making. You can’t trust Putin, not a word. However there is a problem, and it’s that is there isn’t actually an alternative. Ukraine has to beat the Russians out of Ukraine without direct intervention from the US or Europe - which seems unlikely. Without outside help, how will Ukraine get its land back? If it can’t get its land back, what’s the alternative other than to make a deal? If the deal can’t be trusted, security guarantees that results in a war with Europe and the US if Russia breaks the peace might be the only way the deal stays in force. This is the way things are working themselves out, whether any of us like it or not. Edited August 19, 2025 by Sweet

There you go again. It's very very obvious what he meant - repairing the relationship between the United States and Russia. It's so simple, all you had to do was listen to Putin's Alaska speech where he lamented the relationship going off the rails during the Obama/Biden years. He barely mentioned Ukraine in his speech - he talked about restoring a friendly relationship with the United States, only made possible under Trump. Try listening to speech.

Quote “I think he [Russian President Vladimir Putin] wants to make a deal,” Trump whispered to French President Emmanuel Macron in the East Room. “I think he wants to make a deal for me, you understand that? As crazy as it sounds.” Trump said to Macron. Trump is right about it sounding crazy....in his old age he really seems to think he's in a monogamous bromance relationship with Putin where Putin wants to do stuff to help Trump....and this deal that doesn't even exist yet...is going to happen soley because of their special bond....your hero is off the deep end here @cubsfan......applaud the efforts at peace but Putin has really done a number on Donald if he's speaking in private like this (and he is, cause we've got the tape).
cubsfan Posted August 19, 2025 Posted August 19, 2025 You are clearly are avoiding the elephant in the room: Putin's Alaska speech where he is desperately seeking a reset with the United States. It could not be more clear. Try paying attention for once. Personally, I found Putin's speech shocking. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/transcript-of-what-putin-trump-said-in-alaska/

I pray Trump never sends troops to Ukraine, but he may back a security guarantee which will upset his base. "You can't trust Putin, but you do have to deal with him. That is reality." That is quite true, However, the problem is you can't trust Putin OR Trump. Trump is an outrageous liar and he is also notorious for ripping up agreements. So, since past history shows that both are liars and you can't trust either one of them, even if they come to an agreement, how long would it last?

When 9/11 hit, no one helped you more than us...we landed over 225 American aircraft at our airports for protection and safety...we sent hundreds of first responders to help at Ground Zero...Canadians were killed helping the U.S. in Afghanistan and Iraq. Let me ask you...when was the last time U.S. soldiers died helping protect Canada? Most Canadians don't think of stupid things like this about the United States. We're angry at your President and some policies, not you or your country. Cheers!
