Bangladesh & Vietnam - 37% & 46%........big opportunity to get your kids into the apparel production business.....stitching, sowing, dye-ing......live the American dream MAGA....by going back in history 80yrs....in reality....your kids are gonna need a bigger allowance......cause the basket of clothes, toys they pick up in Target/Walmart is going up, up

When you see something as radical as this is - in terms of its impact to everyday American's pocket books just remember this is the Trump mandate has to do this.....to say nothing about the FAKE emergency powers he envoked to do this:

So Canada and Mexico appear to be exempt from the tariffs.  Logically, every one of the.other countries will just ship thru Canada and Mexico.  They've gone from being the worst offenders to the biggest beneficiaries in a matter of days.

I'm not certain Canada and Mexico are off the hook.

Pretty sure everyone not on the list get 10% default.  Plus he might have something special for Canada and Mexico.

25% tariffs for Mexico & Canada - looks like

The Trump administration announced Wednesday that Canada and Mexico will be exempt from the baseline 10% tariff rate, as well as reciprocal levies for specific countries for now.

The 10% tariff would only kick in when the original 25% duties Trump slapped on Canadian and Mexican imports are terminated or suspended. The 25% tariff was based on allegations that the neighboring countries were failing to stem the flow of drugs and crime into the U.S.

Yep - total information underload from the WH right now...I was expecting a 30 page document......all we got was Captain Chaos holding a piece of cardboard in the wind.....quite funny........but a flat 10% on ALL imports seems to be the base tariff layer.....on top of which countries are getting penalized.

  • The White House clarified to CNBC’s Eamon Javers that the tariff rate on Beijing comes in addition to existing 20% tariffs on Chinese imports, meaning the true tariff rate on China is 54%."

I'm almost wondering if this administration bad communication is a feature and not a bug. After all they had 2 months to prepare this press release. Reminds me of Russian generals contradicting each other. So much noise, people just give up on the truth I guess.

Some of tweets on Fintwit chat are hilarious.  I can’t tell what is funnier, the trolling memes, the haters, or the 4D chessers.

I think it's been 10 minutes. Pharma, lumber, copper, gold, and some other categories are exempt for an initial period.

Is that for everyone?  Do products take precedence over country or vice versa?

At least all the confusion is cleared up and we have clarity on how it all will work.

@dwy000 - I believe for everyone -

  • Some goods will not be subject to the Reciprocal Tariff. These include: (1) articles subject to 50 USC 1702(b); (2) steel/aluminum articles and autos/auto parts already subject to Section 232 tariffs; (3) copper, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and lumber articles; (4) all articles that may become subject to future Section 232 tariffs; (5) bullion; and (6) energy and other certain minerals that are not available in the United States. I would have thought that today's tariff messaging would have been handled better. They had months to organize themselves. Looks like Canada might be ok. Who knows.

Well it looks like the American science experiment is moving from the theory stage to the practical stage.

The theory stage was the fun part - because, well, there are no real consequences at this stage. You get to say whatever you want - and you don’t need to be right (or even in the right zip code).

But once you move to the practical stage - well, this is when we start to see consequences. And if it turns out you are wrong - well, things will not be pretty.

How will we know how things are going?

The problem today, is it is almost impossible to find an impartial observer. Except we are talking about the economy and financial markets. And the last time I checked, the stock market is as impartial as it gets - it is not Republican or Democrat.

So what does the stock market think about the theory part of America’s science experiment?

It is giving it a solid ‘C-‘ grade. Stock averages are down about 8% from their all-time highs. Business and consumer confidence is tanking. And the economy looks like it is slowing.

And starting tomorrow, we are moving to the practical stage. So things are likely about to get real. It will be very interesting to see what financial markets do in the coming weeks/months.

—————-

What was one of the reasons the ‘theory’ part got such a low grade?

Well, our student did not put anything in writing. What they discussed (in the verbal part) was not coherent. And their communication skills were terrible.

So why didn’t they get a lower grade?

Because that would be mean. And cruel on the part of the grader. (And this student has notoriously thin skin).

Is Trump a plant for the Democratic Party? Did you see the results of the Wisconsin and Florida elections? The GOP should be very worried about 2026. Throw in a recession and it’ll be a blue wave. How long till congress turns on him? How much further do their portfolios have to drop in addition to the increasing likelihood that they’ll get ducked in the midterms?

Explains why the 30-40 page tariff document  I was expecting from treasury is never coming.

They are literally making this stuff up on the fly….they’re not trying to balance anything….the point of tariffs are tariffs….the real point of tariffs of course is that it puts Captain Chaos at the centre of the world…..a narcissists dream. Can’t wait for the hangover.
