whatstheofficerproblem Posted January 10 Posted January 10 At last I was finally able to find a 2022 batch of the Ardbeg 25. This is from before Glenmorangie bought the distillery and re-opened operations. I could have auctioned this and made a small profit but I was thirsty. Paid $1.2k for it, certainly overpriced as Redbreast spoiled me, but don't regret the purchase. Tastes good, ton of oak, the oak is perhaps the strongest flavor followed by sort of a bonfire burn & spices. The best way to explain the flavor profile for those who haven't tried it yet is that, this tastes like Black Label but with a suit & tie getting off a Rolls Royce, if that makes sense.
gfp Posted January 10 Posted January 10 1200 bottle at your age! Y'all are crazy. currently drinking an espolon blanco on ice splash of water - affordable and sensible

Liquor is one misc item that I don't mind spending on, albeit I'm very cognizant that good whiskey can still be overpriced because allotment and all. I thought I'd probably get a Redbreast 27, none were available near me and I had to drive to downtown LA or Beverly Hills to get that, and that is a soul sucking drive on a weekend which I would rather not put myself through. Went to nearest Total Wines where the app said the bottle was available only to find none in stock, so I was walking along the beach when I saw this liquor store off a street, went in and to my surprise they had a McCallan 25 & Ardbeg 25. Given the McCallan's price I'd rather drink it on someone else's tab, was quoted $1.5k for this brought it down to $1.2k and another misc discount. Feels weird to have a whiskey that is older than me. Oh well, if brewing liquor is an art, so is drinking it. Edited January 10 by whatstheofficerproblem

The guy who sold me the whiskey didn't know the history/sentiment attached to this batch of bottle. I call him back after coming home to let him know this could have auctioned for more, especially in EU where it used to go $2k just a year or two back. He was surprised and said, 'well that's the only bottle of it we had, you got lucky with it'.

Beauty! and yea, you’ll learn, you rarely find truly allocated or desirable stuff at the big boy shops. Bottle King in the Northeast, Total Wine, ABC liquors elsewhere, never have any of that stuff and if they do it’s held back for lotteries or for their rewards club members and even there, it’s rarely accessible. Whereas if you go to well run smaller shops(that almost exclusively sell liquor, not cigarettes and lottery tickets), they always have great stuff and will generally negotiate on price because it’s all way over MSRP anyway. CanadianMunger Posted January 12 Posted January 12 I would highly suggest a glencairn glass for this grade of scotch (I prefer the glencairn copita).. dramatically improved my ability to nose whisky. Cheers and enjoy
UK Posted February 17 Posted February 17 https://archive.is/2pMjJ Falling wine sales reflect a lonelier and more atomised world It’s not just health-conscious youngsters who are saying no to Bordeaux
rogermunibond Posted February 17 Posted February 17 If you live close to a Costco or K&L it's a great time to be a wine lover. There's so much wine that's being offloaded to independent bottlers. A few more years of tearing out vineyards etc and hopefully the S/D balances out more.
bargainman Posted March 3 Posted March 3 So what are you all doing about your coffee? Espresso folks? Any interesting home machines? Aeropress enthusiasts, french press? what say you?
Parsad Posted March 3 Posted March 3 4 hours ago, bargainman said: So what are you all doing about your coffee? Espresso folks? Any interesting home machines? Aeropress enthusiasts, french press? what say you? I've always done filtered pour overs for day to day drinking. I think it reduces bitterness while filtering the coffee and decreasing unfiltered risks increasing LDL levels. If I want an espresso, my Nespresso machine makes a decent one...not great...but good enough to fill the urge until I get to a good coffee shop later or the next day. Cups make a big difference to me...whether it's for a pour over or an espresso...cups make a huge difference in flavor profile, temperature maintenance and how the coffee hits different parts of your tongue. Not very different than wine and wine glasses! Cheers!

But the good thing is you can put into them whatever coffee you like or want to try:). I also like versions with higher water to coffee ratio.
whatstheofficerproblem Posted April 10 Posted April 10 I'm officially 23 now. Getting closer to being called "Unc". That one virus really did ruin my generation's perception of time. Went to the liquor store today, regular beers aren't cutting it anymore for me as I only drink them when having a meal. I have been exclusively drinking IPA for a few years now, and given the history of IPAs, I'm not surprised at all - only natural that I like them as they were quite literally made to cater to my palate! Wanted to get Michelob Amber Bock but couldn't find those, I've already tried all the IPAs on the shelf especially all the Steel Reserves and Voodoos, but this one I haven't tried. Told my friends I was buying a G-Force and they thought I was talking about NVDA chips . It's ok, tastes better than a Guinness, but that's a low bar. I'm saving my golden drops of the Ardbeg for when LQDA wins the suit. Enjoying it, bought three 19.2fl oz cans. Anyways, cheers.
Hoodlum Posted April 11 Posted April 11 (edited) I prefer a full bodied red wine. My favourite go to “cheap” wine at home is Duca di Saragnano Alchymia Primitivo from Italy. When I go out I prefer unique drafts, and no I do not like IPAs. I usually lean towards medium to darker beers. I am currently trying a La Chouffe Blonde from Belgium on tap and it is quite nice. I may pick up a bottle when I visit my daughter soon in Montreal, as it seems only SAQ carries it. Edited April 11 by Hoodlum

If you really like big reds give Tombacco Aglianico del Benevento a shot. About $10 bucks cheaper, too. Fair warning I've never met an Aglianico I didn't like, and Benevento is the old country so I am grossly biased!

Never really understood the fascination with wines, they're a layman's version of Guinness imo i.e. folks like it for the sake of liking it. No offence to all the wine drinkers, just my thoughts . That said, some of the best wines I've had were those brewed locally in IA or WI. Their sweetness to buzz ratio is unmatched, ofc, given how much I enjoy alcohol, I will never shy away from trying your recommendations. I'd like to stick to my Scotches and IPAs. Bourbons I enjoy occasionally as a few LQDA investors sent me cartons of those, might as well share a glass with @Gregmal when I'm in his state. @MMM20 would end up owing me crate of MD 20/20s but I've never tried those. I enjoy RedBreast the most. None of the scotches awaken a desire to sleep in my insomniac body like the RedBreast does, tastes so sweet and the notes are excellent.

LC Posted April 11 Posted April 11 Yeah I mean just keep in mind I have it with a fatty 2 inch ribeye and shred a red afterwards. Or I throw ice in!

You will see why you like wine as you get older. Just because you enjoy wine, doesn't mean you cannot enjoy anything else. A good Mojito or Negroni is terrific! A great Caesar...you Americans have no idea with your Bloody Mary...is a national treasure in Canada. And what did you say about Guinness? That's blasphemous! It's the only beer that fills you up like a meal! Bloody good stuff! Cheers!

Bloody Mary cheapens it but done right, typically at a good steakhouse you get a fat slab of bacon and a jumbo shrimp with the olive shish-kabob and chili pepper powder in the rim….those and a good Hendricks or Empress gin and tonic…

Actually if you ever go to Victoria, BC, go for a drink at the bar at the Fairmont Empress Hotel in the harbor...they make some amazing cocktails using the Empress gin! Every time I'm in Victoria, I either stay there or go specifically to drink! Also, never leave the Empress gin bottle in direct sunlight...it loses the Lavender color. I learned that the hard way! Cheers!
John Hjorth Posted April 11 Posted April 11 (edited) So fascinating! -I've never seen it, or heard about it before. I can't even remember when I last have been having gin! I'll get it next week. I started seaching here in Denmark for a place to get it! Found it in a small shop that I've never heard about before. It specilizes in all kinds of beverages and is situated up North in the 'dark' Jutland, in a small town called Nykøbing Mors, situated on the small island called Mors. Edited April 11 by John Hjorth
