Guy Spier Op-Ed: "The Golden Age of Value Investing Is Over"
Gregmal replied to charlieruane's topic in General Discussion
LOL totally relate. When I first started off, was doing brokerage…the senior folks at the firms always marveled at my stock picks/trading results. But always wanted the standard institutional bullshit around “show me how you do it”…of course meaning…stupid and time wasting analyst style reports, reproducible trading patterns or strategies, basically, if they couldn’t understand it, and replicate it, it didn’t count. What I did, and what I’d recommend to you, is just stick to your guns, because eventually if you produce enough, with all the capital out there, enough will come your way to set you free. -

Yea you’re entirely correct. If you want to eventually get into that game, you need to follow the leaders unfortunately. Get your stupid 3 letter designations…MBA, CFA(both total wastes of time), work at a resume builder fund, get to “portfolio manager” as your desk moniker….then basically build a stealth Rolodex of future investors; leave and spend $50k+ in startup costs hoping you picked the right time and yet still, it’s mainly just sales skills and marketing provided you have the book report resume…. Or, just get enough capital of your own, get some friends and family on board, and then do it the right way and just build out a track record by accident, which in time will be more impressive than going the traditional suit route. -
Man, missed a day full of folks having seizures! Anyhoo, he was a male nurse apparently. So I highly doubt he had a gun….. Otherwise, note to self….dont live in a lawless, liberal run shithole….. Off to dinner…..to all, a good night.

It’s the first time in like a decade and a half that gold is having its day. It’s a shitty asset(if you wanna call it one) but like much else, “price go up” is often a foolproof cure-all that once again has people believin….i personally wouldn’t make much of the short term move.

LMFAO 100%. Nowhere in the world have I ever seen such rampant group-think from guys whom each think and boast of themselves being high level, independent thinkers; than the NYC Finance bro crowd. -

Well, see that’s because people like us had to grind. I’d imagine for folks like GS or DE that (roadshows, audits, letters, compliance, etc) vs having to go out and work a real world, normal person job…..the decision is pretty darn easy. So when we look at things now, having accomplished what we did, on our own, and evaluate the attractive of “(roadshows, audits, letters, compliance, etc) it’s an easy “no thanks”. But imagine being just out of school and having to choose between all that shit, and knowing just biding your time will statistically almost guarantee a better outcome personally than the routes we had ahead of us at that point in time? -

I mean…the shoe fits…. -
The SWOT chart is exactly the type of “instinctual talking piece” that demonstrates how fundamentally flawed EVERYTHING they do is. Real life example. Some years ago, I joined an HOA board as I had investments in the community and a feeling that things were….a mess, at least in terms of financials, business contracts, efficiency, etc. First thing I noticed was that the ENTIRE board consisted of people that fell into three categories; school teachers, government employees, or librarians(in a way a hybrid combo of both the first two). Most were quite old and literally had little else to do; this “position” for them was as much about status and social club like gratification as anything else. It certainly wasn’t about “serving the community”. Immediately upon trying to do ANYTHING, I was immediately met with resistance on the grounds that “that’s not the way we do things”. Or “this is just the way we ve always done things and it’s not fair to change that”. Any sort of outside the box idea was immediately met with some slow geezer reaching into their briefcase and proudly wielding their hard copy printed edition of the “Master Docs/Bi-Laws/Rules and Regs”….we then had to waste sooooo much time entertaining the debate around that….until people were blue in the face. Eventually when we d get to a decision, any action moving forward was met with the need to “look into” or “research” the “proper way to go about it”….another stupid and unnecessary way to waste time. On and on and fuckin on we d go and then a year passes and surprise, surprise! NOTHING has gotten done! Eventually I kind of had to go activist and step on peoples toes and basically break some stuff. The old guard, useless as can be, eventually found the social club setting they spent years manicuring…no longer pleasant! As they resigned we brought in business people and folks whom understood all the stuff they didn’t. In aggregate, while making massive investment in the community, including replacing over 150+ roofs during Covid, our dues from 2018 thru 2023 only went up ~10%….there was THAT much waste and fat and incompetence in there. This is pretty much the EU. It’s all career government employees and academics. These are folk who live in a box checking world. Their framework ALWAYS starts with “the rules” and when things need change, their immediate instinct is “let’s make more rules”. Much like my old HOA compadres, sometimes to get things fixed you need to ruffle feathers, rip up old agreements rather than “wait for them to expire” and do things that make the old guard uncomfortable. I see no signs of this really changing in Europe. The proud declaration of a “SWOT analysis” basically confirms this.

It’s possibly peak Trump Derangement. Orange man say crazy shit…which by the way, he’s been doing every day for 50+ years…and the EU/NATO blow hards rush more military might and planning together for Greenland than they did in 3+ years of Ukrainians getting slaughtered against “Big Bad Vlad”….meanwhile Canadas all good cuz their Temu orders are arriving quicker than expected.
-
Well, OK it's strategically important....how inspired could anyone be by the EU/NATO ability to defend it...given their entire defense of Ukraine was basically....look at the US and ask Daddy for help? And then bitch and moan about the US "not doing enough".....imagine thats probably something worth considering when the subject is "protecting Greenland"...I mean didnt the feckless Germans show up and then leave after 12 hours or something?
-
That, and the fact that those whom wear big boy pants know its just negotiating/business, nothing personal. Look at how Jamie Dimon has handled things...so basically everyone but Europe is fine and well, they can grunt about Trump on their wind farms or in their DEI classes or whatever it is they do..

You literally were talking about how the market drop was so small it was ordinary course. And now they fell for it? Yup. Because they tried their hardest to make yesterday “something”. The headlines. The “look what happened” nonsense. Fast forward not even 24 hours, and if you just decided to sleep through it, you wouldn’t have even known anything happened. Well unless you stumbled upon some of the usual suspects and their hysteria…..
-
Dont worry. Then to feel better about their follies, they "get him", by retroactively claiming he "chickened out"....even though they took it hook, line and sinker...
-
Every. Fucking. Time. They always fall for it. Perhaps skip a few of the daily Trump pressers and spend a little less time on Twitter….my gosh how embarrassing.
-
It would seem so, if logically consistent. Because yesterday “800 points” was a big deal and entirely attributed to Trump. Again, to me, 800 points or whatever is a whopping one or two and fractions percent, one day move, something I generally consider a non event for “the stock market”, which since I’ve been alive and following it, tends to move around sometimes.
-
LOL, nope; did not watch the speech. I chatted with a buddy about Netflix while getting coffee on 30A, and then proceeded to click “politics” on COBF and see people still tweaking out about Trump. Fun morning.
-
Not crazy. European! Just kidding. Love you guys though
-
Personally, I wouldn’t rule out you and Charlie being brothas from another motha as they say. Sans the opinion on Trump you’re both pretty similar, in a very good way. At least in terms of how much can be discerned from the interactions here.
-
That’s crazy, almost as crazy as the “whataboutism” movement that started Jan 20/2025. Like saying “ignore the village drunk…today’s a new day!”….nah Ima avoid that motherfucker cuz I have everything I need to make an assessment of his credibility. Very simply, if you were wrong for so long to such a tremendous degree, that needs to be considered when assessing one’s credibility going forward. On Trump, many folks have a nearly decade long track record of hitting .091….earning a demotion just as they would in baseball.
-
There will be more Trumps in the future. The next is going to be some hard left version that’s even more powerful and agitating. Then it will be a right wing guy. Then it will be a lefty. The cycle needs to break, but likely is unfixable.

If you truly believe that it’s an existential crisis, then I think it warrants the question of whether this is new or not. Because the issue is that the same characters have been falling for the media propaganda and lying about the severity of these “existential threats”…for over a decade now. I wish we had the archives to make a Wall of Shame for all the suckers who 100% scarfed down Russiagate; and then every manufactured crisis after it. Just total fools. Now, I could see sympathy if when the baton passed, this same sort of unhealthy and bizarre scrutiny carried over to the next President…..but it didn’t. They proceeded to watch a guy duck the media, trip all over himself in a literal sense, and slur off one syllable word based teleprompter speeches only to tell us, dead ass serious, it was a far right conspiracy theory that he was shot. And as if that couldn’t conceivably be topped, now those same clowns want to be taken seriously when offering up their medical assessment of “Trumps health” LMFAO…you can’t make this shit up. Im starting to get the way I was towards the end of Trumps first term. Where I really wouldn’t mind a change of scenery, only because the bitches and whiny children are just soooo annoying you just want them to go away and shut the fuck up lol. It’s fun watching them go bananas, but even that after awhile becomes redundant. Thankfully for all, midterms are 9 months away. We should get some reprieve.

The US caring about what the European establishment thinks would kind of be like LeBron James worrying about what a D2 assistant coach thinks of him.
-
Well, yea, totally, except for the whole fact that I literally just click “politics”, open, laugh, shitpost. You guys are out watching his every presser, stalking his Truth Social and Twitter accounts(seriously, you guys may be the only reason Truth Social exist), reading up on every “Trump story” you can get your hands on, and requoting any loser on X or YouTube with a hot take and a podcast lol
-
LMFAO and Im sure you watched every minute of it. Then hawked his social media accounts waiting for the next statement.... It really is kinda wild how the people most obsessed with Trump are.....the very ones whom go around telling everyone else they are obsessed with Trump.
-
Probably the same as most. Amusement value. There is next to nothing of material value in the politics thread, outside of some great contras. Please let’s hope, that there aren’t really people here, whom think their political commentary, has any real value…..
