Good economy? Inflation. People have jobs? Inflation? Getting raises? Inflation. Rate cuts? Inflation. Tariffs? Inflation. lol for fucks sake. Well as one who has lived through a period of 18-20% inflation rates and remember seeing my mortgage jump to 17.5%, inflation is no fun. You would pay your mortgage for five years and when renewall came up you would see that almost all of your mortgage payments had gone to the interest while the amount owing on your house had hardly decreased.

Sure but the 70s inflation was very different than it is today. Problem is many people only have the 70s to “study” and to a hammer…..everything is a nail. Core inflation/deflation in the unhealthy manner is a natural imbalance of supply and demand and that’s why it seems so scary to so many. The kind that’s not scary is artificially manipulated crap like this. Or stuff that’s directly contributed to stuff like a supply chain. Fix the supply chain, problem solved. Workout the tariff issues. Problem solved. The reason they went ape shit on rates in the 89s/70s is that they had no clue where the root cause was, and honestly, listening to them today, 50 years later, they still don’t have a clue .

ICUMD Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago (edited) Trump is using Tariffs as an economic sanction to conquer and acquire Canada. Must stand strong and value our resources fully with a heafty export tax. At the core of this, is a fight for control of energy and natural resources. No doubt about it, it's a form of war. Sweet Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago 3 minutes ago, Spooky said: None of this makes any sense. How can y'all listen to this guy? I don’t know if it’s supposed to make sense. If Canada turned around and said it wished to become a state he would be saying they are wonderful people and their economy is great. He’s simply talking his book. I think he would have a far better chance of America becoming a 51st state if he seriously drafted a proposal and wrote a ‘love story’ to Canadians. This way he just puts everyone against him. …and to be honest, there are enormous benefits to both Canada and the US if they were the same nation.

Could go either way, imo. “We see immediate recessionary consequences for some of the economies involved and broad-based negative read-across to the world economy,” according to Deutsche Bank. So probably deflationary first, inflationary after the recession.

This is quite true and today any inflationary impact can be very easily and quickly stopped.
Castanza Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago (edited) No clue how this is all going to shake out. Generally I oppose tariffs and support free trade. I think a reasonable solution is the one WB promoted in the early 2000s but that also has its drawbacks. Seems like Trump is making enemies with the wrong people at the wrong time but you just never know. However it has felt like since the 2016 elections that the world has been moving towards some consolidation or at the very least so large moves amongst the political pieces. Interesting time to be alive that’s for sure. Perhaps it’s time the global pecking order gets a good shake to light a fire under the ass of Western leadership. The collective West has gotten complacent and soft. At the end of the day, uncertainties like this are why I paid off my mortgage, live well below my means and have a generous emergency fund saved. Life goes on! See y’all Monday Edited 2 hours ago by Castanza
Gregmal Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago Liberal leaders: Trump is Hitler Trump elected: let’s go to Mar a lago. Let’s cozy up to him. Liberal leaders: China is evil Tariffs: Let’s do more business with China lol The thing that’s great about Trump is he really exposed the system for what it is…and that’s largely a massive bunch of elitist babies self dealing and lying to the public to push their own agendas.

Things to think about: - why did US end up with allies that were neighbours with the soviets and later the Chinese? - could it have anything to do with a powerful neighbour saying they want to annex you? Survival is a motivator. powerful countries refuse to learn from history as humans are not rational and give in to Hubris. If this does not end soon the outcomes will be what none of us can predict. If this does not end soon, and the outcomes are not desired, new leaders will be elected on both sides of both borders. Unless you buy into the NYT narrative about Trump upending the constitution and being in power for the next 5 terms. Then yea, I guess you gotta move to Cana.....duh.
wisdom Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago (edited) Agreed but the next 4 years will ruin the relationship that US and Canada have had. Something that makes North America different and special as there isnt hatred here amongst our neighbours. The rest of the world isn’t so lucky. Edited 2 hours ago by wisdom

The Canada/US shouldn't last long. Then again you guys have Trudeau so IDK.

Like every other party; take power…… And you might consider me a total old nut job; but I don’t see these Trumpicans leaving in 4 years no matter what actions they take… Flip side of the coin ….. Watch Trudeau become a Canadian hero for standing up to Trump over the next few months haha Like a prop up for Biden

We had 50%+ of our country thinking there was some Russian Collusion conspiracy going on for the better part of 4 years too. We had 65% of the country thinking you were a pariah and didnt deserve to have any rights if you questioned an experimental vaccine that didnt actually duo what they told us it did. Media is a powerful thing. My condolences.

Trudeau has been given a second chance to rescue his reputation by meeting Trump head on whereas up to now he was despised by so many Canadians. I don't think this is exactly what Trump had in mind.

I quoted the president on his social media platform that he will make Canada as a nation unviable and offered the choice of becoming the US. i did not rely on any media - this is a quote from the President Edited 1 hour ago by wisdom

Even though you admit they are largely a PR stunt to be able to claim he kept a campaign promise. You support that?

USMCA if he was that awesome at negotiating we should have no problems by now. I would recommend not starting by being a bully otherwise there are unintended consequences. You all seem to be totally lost because you’re used to the good ole boy club negotiating style where they all go to some yuppy summit or super exclusive location and drink cognac while figuring out how to continue the untenable status quo and package it so the little guy thinks he’s got a chance. That’s been Trudeaus game. It was Biden career. It was Obama and Bush’s game. It’s definitely not how real world business gets done. Trump wants something from Mexico, Canadas at times been a bit of a freeloader, he uses one to get what he wants from the other. He has the leverage and this is literally one of the bigger ticket items he ran on. It’s all very practical and easy to see. I don’t have to agree with something to see it or understand it.
