  1. As an Ontarian I hope we don't go this way. Cutting off power will just hurt people.
  2. Haha. Good point. It still does in Canada!
  3. I might be talking out of my ass but Ontario is a province and they don't have legal authority to impose tarrifs.
  4. I hope you are right. CAD up slightly today, currency traders betting the tariffs will be temporary.
  5. Markets not too happy about the tariffs going into effect. VIX over 25. Wonder if the administration will reverse course.
  6. Bit late - European defence stocks have been ripping already.
  7. I mean there is another option where the US provides a real security guarantee and deterrence for a lasting peace rather than just giving Putin whatever he wants.
  8. What an embarrassment. Who else can take up the mantle as leader of the free world?
  9. Why not just hang on for the ride? Save the taxes / transaction fees.
  10. Such a class act. Wish more people were like him.
  11. I have been reading and hearing a bunch of chatter about the "Mar-a-Lago Accords" and wanted to start a new thread to discuss the economic implications of it. At a high level it is calling for re-writing the rules of the international monetary and financial system similar to the Plaza Accord in the 80s. Thinking through these kind of financial systems issues is definitely not my strong suit so I'm hoping smarter people than me can help us figure out what is going on. I'm also hoping we can steer clear of the political side of this and just focus on the economic side and actual developments - can something like this work and what would be the implications for our investments? Here is a paper written by Miran, the nominee for Chair of the Council of Economic Advisors, when he was a strategist at Hudson Bay Capital: https://www.hudsonbaycapital.com/documents/FG/hudsonbay/research/638199_A_Users_Guide_to_Restructuring_the_Global_Trading_System.pdf Article in the FT: https://www.ft.com/content/1e19165e-1096-4aad-bf08-42132f7a3239 Latest Odd-lots podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HI0I7zFcfZo A key pillar of the approach seems to be trying to significantly weaken the USD.
  12. +1
  13. Well played sir.
  14. Fairly uneventful.
  15. Would you share your rationale?
  16. True, this is a big problem in Canada with the Federal government just having one answer - increase taxes, rather than looking to do more with the spending / resources they have.
  17. Yes, the inter provincial barriers we have to trade within the country don't make sense. For instance, in Ontario it is difficult for people to buy wine made in BC. Luckily this issue is garnering a lot more discussion so hopefully something can be done. We also have different securities regulators for each province which, in a country our size, makes no sense.
  18. I don't think this is correct. When Buffett gives shares to charities they convert them from the A shares to the B shares. The Munger family and some other current A share holders will end up with control.
  19. It's sarcasm since a certain poster called it a left wing rag. I don't feel good about sending my money to Newscorp but it gives me another viewpoint on everything happening right now.
  20. I am skeptical it will help anyone except the well connected and political elite. You are probably correct.
  21. It would be good to give all Americans a stake in the economy / output of the nation, it might help with inequality and the feeling that only the top 1% benefit from capitalism. I wish Canada had done something similar to Norway with its energy assets, we would all be wealthy . The downside is that there are additional fees and costs and less agency for individuals to make investing decisions. Governance also needs to be thought through carefuly, MBS took over control of the Saudi PIF and has been making some pretty bad investments. Ontario tried to set up a separate provincial pension plan and that was a disaster which ultimately fell apart. Another idea that I thought was cool is giving every citizen a trust fund when they are born with like $5k in the S&P 500 which they can't sell until they are an adult. Give people some ownership and skin in the game.
  22. That sounds pretty nice right now.
  23. Interesting. I'm fairly certain it is a Ted investment.
