My view is that Canada should drop the 13% HST (essentially a VAT). It is a regressive tax that penalizes consumption. Might be a good way to offset some of the pain from tariffs. Toronto as a city doesn't have the power to impose the HST. We would need the federal / provincial governments to do this.

The problem is that Covid occurred in that time period so there is not clear data on the effect of the tariffs in the 1st term in isolation. Yes, we are "screwing you over" by providing you with minerals, auto parts, oil, etc. that you need. Your leader and policies are irrational.

China, Mexico and Canada account for 50% of the US' imports. So prices are going to go up by 10-25% on 50% of your imports.

And how is the current plan going to fix these things? Tariffs will cause inflation and hurt the economy. Contrary to popular belief most crime is not committed by immigrants.

Trump's negotiating style is fine for one-off games only. Anyone who has a basic knowledge of game theory knows that in repeat games you can't negotiate this way.

The issue is that there already is a very complicated free trade arrangement between US, Canada and Mexico with a lot of give and takes from all parties - it was formerly NAFTA and now the USMCA which has been negotiated over many decades. Now trump has invoked some kind of emergency power to impose blanket tariffs on all goods separate from this agreement. Does the USMCA even exist any more? No one even knows.

I agree with this view. Retaliatory tariffs just make American imports more expensive for Canadians. We could always sue in the WTO but that will take like a decade to resolve (if America even decides to abide by their dispute resolution process any more).

Buddy this is an outcome that I do not want to happen. I do not want to live in a world where China is the dominant power. For years and years China has been going to other countries telling them that the US is an unreliable partner, that democracy is too chaotic and doesn't work. Why not partner with the CCP who you know will be here for the long haul. They are building bases in traditionally US ally countries like the UAE. They own so much infrastructure in Africa and South America. A 25% blanket tariff on all Canadian goods from our biggest trading partner is going to cause significant economic hardship here. We will need to find new markets for these goods. Trump imposed less tariffs on China itself! This is just bullying, going after weaker countries. Why don't you focus on the real threats in the world?
