Onefoothurdles Posted January 24, 2025 Posted January 24, 2025 Gents, Ive invested in some good quality Indian single malts and contributed towards FIH.U profitability as well.
whatstheofficerproblem Posted July 5, 2025 Posted July 5, 2025 (edited) I am offended by the lack of activity on this thread today. Very unpatriotic and anti-national. I was on my way to buy myself a McCallan 12 to commemorate both July 4th and my first paycheck, but the guy at Total Wines did a pretty good job of convincing me that the Tamdhu distinction is better than the 12s. Smells great and allegedly tastes even better. Can't drink yet as the club soda is not cold enough. Also ignore the Blend No. 27s. Can't find a single pack of Midnights since I moved to California. Such a backward state. Edited July 5, 2025 by whatstheofficerproblem

Amrut is a little harsher in taste than Indri for me. Indri is good, but my conscious gets the better of me whenever I try to buy a new bottle given the founder's history. I miss mixing my Old Monk with Thumbs up. Tried it with Pepsi here in the US and tastes like dog water. Thumbs up is the only thing it tastes good with given it's not sweet like the American beverages. But alas, 2L of Thumbs up here costs as much as a single malt.
LC Posted July 5, 2025 Posted July 5, 2025 We’re actually having Japanese whiskey currently, but happy 4th nonetheless!
Spekulatius Posted July 5, 2025 Posted July 5, 2025 (edited) We had some sparkling wine from the Loire for the 4th which was from the purchase above. A bit different than Champagne- a bit less soapy ( Champagne sometimes has a somewhat soapy taste from the chalk soil). The sparkler from Loire is a bit cheaper than Champagne and was recommend by that wine dude at Total Wine (which are awesome here). I highly recommend it too. We also had some Indian food here from a new place close by and washed it down with a Pilsner and Lager while listening to Americana acoustic duo at a local brewery. This is America! Which ones have you been drinking? I have a bottle of Miyagikyo Single Malt that has been very good. I’ve tried the Hibiki 17 year and it was very good. But a lot of Japanese stuff is just kinda weird tbh. Hard time knowing which is quality and which is just marketing garbage. Everyone seems to like the Nikka Coffee but I’m not a fan tbh.
Castanza Posted July 6, 2025 Author Posted July 6, 2025 I’ve been working through some Still Austin bottles. Sips very well for products aged only 2 years. The Cask Strength Bourbon has been very good as well as the Bottled in Bond Blue Corn.
LC Posted July 7, 2025 Posted July 7, 2025 I picked up that bottle of nikka barrel aged whiskey from Costco, I thought it was a good value for a 50$ bottle. Has a strong woody/barrel finish if you enjoy that flavor!
Santayana Posted July 7, 2025 Posted July 7, 2025 It might be a little ghetto, but where I live you can buy the On The Rocks bottled cocktails for $8.99/pint. It's owned by Beam/Suntory (SYBFY). Because they have the volume you get a high quality product at a decent price. I keep wanting to buy the stock, but don't see the catalyst for them actually making money.

To put the glass in the other hand now and then is also advisable, to avoid building an asymmetrical physique! Haha yea excited about the KC 21 as it’s a new limited release. Heard excellent things from people who’ve tried it so figured its worth tossing in. Had to bundle up cuz the one downside of living in Florida is that the booze selection is total garbage. It’s basically Publix and big chain store crap and the ABC and Total Wine stuff where they do dumb lotteries based on customer spend. My guy in NJ always gets decent allocation of the big boy December releases so the stars aligned fairly well which will hopefully hold me over til summer. It did come at a cost. About four dozen Benjamin Franklin’s. But end of the day this stuff ain’t for mere mortals and the likelihood of even seeing one of these bottles anywhere near where we are living is nil unless you see it at a bar to the tune of a single Mr. Franklin for a 1.5 oz pour. So the struggle is real!

I’ve held some of those talks lol! Even bigger deficiency; it’s kind of shocking actually, is the complete lack of butchers in NWFL. Went to Publix and asked, nope….no butcher on site. Just “what comes off the truck”…Went to a bunch of local delis…no butcher. Some looked at me like I was crazy even asking. Gave in and finally went to the tourist trap at Greenway next to Lodge30A, literally called “Salty Butcher” which had a decent variety of cuts and whatnot, but when I asked for something simple like pork scallopini was told “we only have what comes frozen and vacuum sealed”….Finally found a place with an in house butcher…Carousel on West End PCB, but it’s like 2/10 quality compared to what us Yankees are used to in the NYC burbs. Here I thought, my whole life, that every town has 2-3 local butcher shops, because who doesn’t demand fresh cut meats? Now I live in paradise and have it all; except highly allocated booze and a butcher shop. But I think that might be part of the schtick….because every super nice restaurant has whatever cut of whatever animal you want, and no shortage of $50-150 a pour spirits. Go figure.

Spekulatius Posted December 21, 2025 Posted December 21, 2025 I don’t do liqueurs much at all but Total wine is actually good for wines unless you are a total snob. Costco in NC sells wines too and is pretty good as well.
whatstheofficerproblem Posted January 6 Posted January 6 (edited) I had Redbreast PX edition for NYE. Found a rare 2023 edition for $150 and bought it, zero regrets. This is the best scotch I had and perhaps the best value for money imo. Midleton's finest work. I drank the whole thing neat, tastes awesome, lots going on in it but the profile will surprise you each sip. One sip feels sweet, other oaky and another nutty/spicy. Liked this better than the 12. The kicker is though, I've had drinks that get me drunk and drinks that get me sleepy. This one got me both drunk and sleepy. Slept like a baby. Going to try Redbreast 25 next, celebratory drink for me come bonus season. Edited January 6 by whatstheofficerproblem

Will reach out when in FL Haha I’ve got an open invite to anyone in town! The expensive booze is funny cuz it’s also somewhat of an alternative asset class….until the seal is broken at least! So with certain extremely allocated stuff, if you can find it(which a lot of people underestimate this aspect; like go to your local liquor store and ask for an Eagle Rare 17 or a Pappy and see what kind of reaction you get. And if they do have it watch their expression watching your expression when you see why they have it; ie how much they’re asking!) and not pay full secondary, it’s basically just a cash substitute. The Redbreast is great though. It’s my father in laws go to. That and the blue/yellow spot Irish whiskey. We got him the 27 for his 60th. It’s definitely a better celebratory drinker because it’s not hard to find, and while expensive the price is rather stable because of how it’s produced and distributed.
LC Posted January 6 Posted January 6 Booze, art, food, women...are for enjoying, not hoarding! And preferably with friends! Well, maybe not that last one, but who am I to say!? The french are influencing me... We are in haute-savoy so the varietals here are very crisp and mineral-y, which for lighter wines I think are excellent. Deeper reds I prefer the tannins and associated hangovers of rich southern reds. Post-meal has been Genepy over ice which is also great after the foods here. Lots of alpine cheeses, dry sausages/charcuteries, and breads. Cigarettes are healthier here, I think as well. The locals are amazing, older in general but active and strong sense of mountain community. They hike switchbacks for hours each morning, as I lazily ride the gondola. They will outlive us all! And, I think Greg's whiskey cabinet puts most of our portfolios to shame!

And, I think Greg's whiskey cabinet puts most of our portfolios to shame! lol there’s balance, when I was younger, you too I’d imagine…when you drink you drink. Typically the good whiskeys are for chilling out….so it’s problematic! Cuz if you drink a dozen Bud Lights(I always preferred Nattys) you can wind down with some whiskey but at that point JD7 tastes the same as Macallan 18….. As I’ve aged, I’ve become more committed to less exuberance, and as such, what might seem wasteful, is just replacing the void. So maybe a decent outing is 2-3 Michelobs and then a nightcap with a Michters 10. Problem is in Florida it’s the land of ABC Liquors, Total Wine, Publix and Walmart so you go in looking for a Michters 10 and they all lie to you and tell you how “yea we get that and lots of Blantons every now and again but you just missed it” and then try to sell you some stupid run of the mill bottle like Old Forester or some store pick. So stock up season tends to get wild which is typically December. Wife rolls her eyes because “you can sell what you don’t drink at attractive IRRs” is a real thing, but then she always brings up the lack of a proof of concept since I haven’t quite been selling them lol
