LC
39 minutes ago, coc said: Very simple, very predictable, evil villains, Mary Sue good guys, etc. Quite surprised the positive reviews. Sorry you didn't like it - I must've been in a mood I thought the pacing was good but in retrospect I can understand that criticism Glad you liked Slow horses. Gary Oldman is so good. Pelagic
I found two shows on Hulu to be fairly good. The Looming Tower which covers the US's battle with Al Qaeda through the 90s. And No Man's Land which is set during the Syrian Civil War with a group fighting Isis.

Looming Tower is pretty dated. it was an ok show. That was my recollection.

Oh my god!! Fabulous...must watch again ASAP. Edited September 26 by coc

ACooke
I recently watched the 2016 series 'War and Peace' with Paul Dano as Pierre, which was surprisingly, very good. I'm often protective of books I've read and enjoyed and avoid movies/series with the same subject matter for fear of changing how I visualized the book (although with war and peace it was probably equal parts 'enjoyed' and felt a sense of accomplishment haha). Anyway, I decided there was enough I'd have missed throughout the book that it was worth watching. The series follows the book closely; the characters seemed very good representations of how I'd imagined them and beyond that, it certainly wasn't the dry, slow-burn that the book is often (probably not deservedly) branded. well worth watching IMO. I presume you read War and Peace in English. … and not Russian. Even though French is my second language and English being third, I would have a hard time reading books in French. Yet, a French-written novel must be read in the original French. And thus War and Peace must be read in Russian. Yet we don’t have enough lifetime to learn new languages. A pity

A pity I am not sure about War and Peace or other aurhors, but almost certain you can read Dostoevsky in your own language and it will still beat like 80 percent or more of original language alternatives. I also read same book by Bulgakov in both languages and translated version was not bad either. Edited October 9 by UK
UK
https://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2024/08/12/some-good-news-and-some-bad-news-about-house-of-the-dragon-season-3/ By all rights, we should be getting a new episode of House of the Dragon tonight. Alas, Season 2 was cut short by two episodes thanks to Warner Bros. cost-saving measures following the Discovery merger—a merger many questioned at the time, and one that has sent shockwaves through HBO’s programming slate, including the cancellation of beloved series like Raised By Wolves and Westworld. Finished watching this. Apparently Zaslav is also the one to blame for ending the 2 season of HoD too early:))
Saluki
I just watched Hardcore Henry and I recommend it. The plot is a little weak, but it's incredible that they can pull off a movie with this much special effects for $2 million. It's also has creative cinematography: the movie is shot with GoPro cameras and you see it from the POV of the protagonist like you are in a video game. More proof that you don't need Hollywood and $100mm budgets making mediocre scripts is Old Boy. Also $2 million budget and routinely makes it on lists by critics of best films ever made. If you watch the original, then watch the Spike Lee remake, you will see how quickly Hollywood can ruin something by taking something original and adding the standard Hollywood formula elements to pander to audiences or check some boxes. UK
After 4 episodes I just love Fargo 5 season. They really righted the ship:). And its soundtrack (Prodigy!:)). And its accidental timing coincidence with real Halloween:)
Xerxes
The first episode of Part 2 Yellowstone is so badly written, directed and edited. right off the bat, within the first 5 min, I knew something was off. Maybe due to Hollywood strike.

Saluki
We are watching the Detroiters and it's very funny. It's the same people who made "I Think You Should Leave." It's the same oddball humor, but it's a sitcom instead of a skit show.
Spekulatius
I rewatched Godfather l. Don’t realize how much Marlon Brando and Pacino carried the movie, the fist time I watched it. Going to watch the sequels too. Probably gives you a good idea how politics works now too.
