modern studies on alcohol consumption basically show a linear correlation with mortality.

I have found if you simply flip the chart upside down, it becomes a lot more comforting 😄

I’m surprised no one has mentioned green tea….much better than coffee and alcohol

I get 1st cut shincha green tea sent from Japan .. not that expensive.. Taste great

and , been doing it for years .. Also have been using an Oura rings since they came out/ tea has no effect on deep sleep / rem readings

I switch from coffee to green tea about noon everyday.  I switch to water after 5pm.  My average day:

before noon:  2-3 cups of coffee.

12pm-5pm: 2-3 cups green tea.

after 5pm: 2-3 cups water.

That's not a bad idea!  But then no one serves dim sum after 12pm Monday to Friday!  🙂  Cheers!

That’s awesome I’ll have to try… but I’m partial to the green tea shincha …. Especially with all the long term data of the health benefits behind it…… and I admit I cheat a little and add some Manuka honey in the am for a kickstart

That's all I buy...Manuka honey...absolutely delicious!  It's ok if you add a little to your tea.  Cheers!

Ever since I switched to a manual coffee grinder, I'm down to 1 cup a day. Like you, I switch the green tea until noon - 2pm. Then water until bed.

I think I've read/heard the "Why we sleep" author saying no caffeine after noon to get the majority out of your system before bed time.

Average day, not every day.  I make exceptions.  I prefer Oolong Tea with my dim sum.

Listing our addictions in the order of their harm:

1. Cigarettes

2. Alcohol

3. Cannabis

4. Coffee

5. Sugar

6. Fried

7. Bread

IDK Ive read some pretty gnarly stuff about ultra processed foods and refined sugars. Arguably worse than everything above it depending I guess on how you define usage.  For many, especially in America, the processed food lifestyle is a 24/7/365 thing. Between fast food, and then the snack stuff and frozen dinner types. Way worse than a few coffees or beers a day with an otherwise balanced diet IMO.

+1

Sugar and ultra processed foods are probably far more dangerous than Coffee.

There are a lot of positve effects of a few Coffees a day.

And a lot of Alcohol over a long time is probably worse than Cigarettes.

If alcohol is so bad why are Spaniards and Italians living so long? they all drink, not heavily but certainly constantly. If I dont look at studies but instead look at the world around me I would say moderate including daily consumption of low ABV seems to be ok. Just dont pound Vodka or get shot,  get hit by a train, try a backflip on a dirt bike, dont huff glue and you'll probably be just fine. Have fun Gentleman you only get one shot at this.

Russians drinking vodka = bad         67.2 years male life expectancy

Spaniards drinking red wine and beer = ok          80.4 years male life expectancy

Czech, loads of beer = ok  79.9 years male life expectancy

2022 Data from CDC

  • Heart disease: 702,880
  • Cancer: 608,371
  • Accidents (unintentional injuries): 227,039
  • COVID-19: 186,552
  • Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 165,393
  • Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 147,382
  • Alzheimer’s disease: 120,122
  • Diabetes: 101,209
  • Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 57,937
  • Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis: 54,803

- Life expectancy is primarily driven by genetics.

- Quality of life is mostly driven by choices

Since 1960 - Cancer rates have declined in the US since 1960 from ~140 out of 100k to ~100 out of 100k

Since 1960 - Obesity rates have tripled from 13% of adults to nearly 42%

In other words, pick your poison....one seems to be replacing the other. Both can lead to poor quality of life. Both are fine in moderation.

Approximately 1 of 20 will fuck up with alcohol. Of course you can drink moderately (that is what I do), but take care that you are not the person who fucks up.

It is easy to drift into it. In my leisure time I am working as a lawyer, which helps old and ill people. And most people fuck up, because of alcohol.

Ingredient 1: Chemical Ingestion

The first recipe for misery is by consuming chemicals to alter your mood or perception. For example, after a hard day’s work, we might visit the pub for a round of drinks so that we can have a relaxed evening. These kinds of external chemicals create an imbalance in our system. Munger says that addiction can happen to any one of us and once trapped in its web, it is very difficult to come out of it. So, if you are seeking pleasure by consuming chemicals, you are guaranteed a path to misery, if not done in limits or in a controlled manner.

Yes its actually a scary thought. I'm talking my book because I like alcohol, both the feeling and the taste so in my mind I want it to be ok. Other chemicals, pills, drugs, ect I just didn't care for so they pose no risk. Boose is the big one for me and it needs to be kept in check.

There, of course, is more nuance to this than the list provides.  There is a huge difference in dose.   There is excessive, moderate, and low uses of all of these substances.  I'd arrange the list something like this and group "sugar, fried, bread" into one, most people who abuse 1 abuse all of them. Excessive alcohol use would be #1 because nothing can destroy your life faster, except for hard drug use (which we are not discussing), where moderate or low alcohol use would be way down the list.  Maybe something like this.

1. Excessive Alcohol use.

2. Excessive Cigarettes use.

3. Excessive Sugar, Fried, Bread use.

4. Moderate Cigarettes use.

5. Excessive Cannabis use.

6. Moderate Sugar, Fried, Bread use.

7. Excessive Coffee use.

8. Low Cigarettes use.

9. Low Sugar, Fried, Bread use.

10. Moderate Alcohol use.

11. Moderate Cannabis use.

12. Low Alcohol use.

13. Low Cannabis use.

14. Moderate Coffee use.

15. Low Coffee use.

It is also genetical.

If you have some form of alcoholism in your family, stay away from it.

If in your family is any form of schizophrenia, don´t smoke Cannabis.

If you have heart problems, stay away from everything. 😉
