Xerxes Posted March 13 Posted March 13 15 minutes ago, Mephistopheles said: I agree with all of this. I think the harm to the Gulf states isn't talked about enough, to your point the evaporation of tourism and Dubai in particular being a major trade/business center and getaway for the wealthy. The IRGC doesn't have a central command right? Their goal is to disrupt the West, not do what's best for their people of course. My concern is: what kind of ceasefire deal would be palatable to the Gulf? And why would Iran even make a deal when they don't mind sacrificing their own people, and where there is no central authority? Trump will likely declare victory and leave. Israel will be satisfied at significantly diminishing the regime. But for the Arab Gulf states, nothing short of complete defeat of the IRGC would bring back wealthy foreigners IMO. Why would anyone travel to Dubai, even after a ceasefire, if the IRGC is still in charge? May take years of no conflict/violence for people to return. So now the Arabs will need the U.S. to provide ground troops. Nothing short of a major terror attack will make this politically possible in the U.S. Scary world. Even though Khamenei disastrous foreign policies have largely been responsible for losses and misfortune that IRGC had to endure, there was always deference toward him by the IRGC, the institution. Maybe because when Khameni took over back in 1989, he had no base of his own, so he allied himself with IRGC and a mutual reliance developed. That is why no matter who is now the new leader, never again so much power will be allowed to be concentrated in one institution (Leader office). Which means despite the non-sense coming from Mojtaba (assuming he is actually around) IRGC is now free to chart a course of its own. What course that remains to be seen. It is an institution with many stakeholders, some commercially driven, some ideologically driven. They need to duke it out, what is important to them.
Xerxes Posted March 13 Posted March 13 Btw I have no doubt that tourism will come back .. it always does. The effect I think is more trade and capital investment. For instance the aspiration to turn into a AI hub. Things like that. Emirates Airline may not be a long haul network of first choice. Other hubs like Bangalore, Istanbul and other major airport will pick up long haul traffic, that has been so over concentrated in the Gulf region. A rebalancing.

Hard to be loyal at an elite level to two things that both require full time attention.

Malmqky Posted March 13 Posted March 13 Everyone knows Trump is a morally lacking person. What it comes down to is whether or not Trump is what this country needs. I don't think so personally, but there's an angle where we all look back and realize the Trump presidency is the disruption this country needed long term, even if short term it's a disastor. I also hold out hope I'm wrong and everything works out fine. I hope his presidency is a success, even if I can't see it at the moment.

People who bitch constantly, every day, about the very same thing are what most would consider angry.
Malmqky Posted March 13 Posted March 13 Take Iran for example. Looks like a moderate success so far, although massive downside looms on the horizon. But, if things wrap up quickly, and the Iranian people take their country back (doubtful if we look at Iraq and Afghanistan), it's going to be a massive win for humanity, even if I don't think we should be involved in the Middle East.

Perhaps it looks that way to you. But if if weren't for obvious TDS that dominates this thread, I'd ignore it completely because there would be nothing to reply to. The irony is, as investors we are trained not to project current results into the infinite future when evaluating an investment. That is precisely what you guys are doing when it comes to Trump. The very notion that anything Trump does, says or thinks will cause irreparable harm or damage in the future is downright silly yet that is TDS in a nutshell. So can you blame me for continuing to be entertained by you all?
Gregmal Posted March 13 Posted March 13 That’s really the issue it comes down to. So many of these folks are just deranged and purely incapable of having any sort of relational thought, let alone properly communicated conversation, about anything tangentially related to Trump. What’s worse, is that because the sphere of Trump is so large, this permeates into way more than it should. This is why we get shit like “forever war” declarations three days in, even though he plainly states out of the gate it’ll be “about 4 weeks”(next up of course is these mongrels eagerly awaiting the 29th calendar day to rage about “LIES” lol)….or brandishing both stupidity and ignorance moaning about Kash flying private even though anyone really concerned or paying attention to this stuff should know that it is a congressional mandate and the LAW for him to fly private. I mean heck, even the “Trumps mentioned a billion times in the Epstein files” cry is very easily debunked by details explaining that the substantial majority of them are from the past decade and relate to gossip about him being POTUS….but they like to stick with “their versions”…just like if we pullback up the term 1 thread, how many folks were DEAD certain Trump’s collusion with Russia was “about to be exposed any day now”! So yea, you’ll have to excuse the humor in it all, but sadly, so many of these otherwise capable folks, are just brained rotted and nothing they say on the subject even remotely matters anymore because it’s worthless, corrupted rubbish.

Greg...wasn't the war in Ukraine supposed to be over in the first day according to Trump himself? Of course, he was being facetious...I think...but other than the southern border, his timelines have not been anywhere near accurate. Look at tariffs...look at the bombing of Iran a couple of months ago (nuclear capabilities obliterated)...look at releasing tax files...look at releasing Trump-Epstein files...how about 2020 election fraud (still zero proof into the 2nd year of the 2nd term)! Maybe he's genuinely trying to do things and trusting the wrong people to execute? But it's his name on the President's door and he's the one making the promises! Cheers!
