Thought Experiment: Tech & Internet Owner-Operator Stocks
augustabound replied to a topic in General Discussion
;D I just laughed out loud at that. -
I don't have one for I.T. but I usually google by file type "pdf". https://www.google.ca/#q=filetype:pdf+information+technology+industry+primer I find searching by pdf bypasses all the typical internet crap and you usually find some equity reports by big brokers and some universities. You could also change industry primer to equity research in your search.

I walk by the LED lights at the Home Depot all the time but can't bring myself to pay $15 or $20 for a bulb even though it will last until my girls are in college.

Not sure about other provinces or states but in Ontario, they'll just raise rates.

These are the times I miss Chris Farley. He'd be a natural Rob Ford. -

Hey, me too. Hill Park. A stab in the dark says pre-UCC you were at Hillfield? They guys on 102.1 (formerly "The Edge", now just mediocre mainstream pop), call him Eric Cartman of South Park. This is a video of him leaving city hall. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOOh67ginRA Disclaimer; I am not, repeat NOT a member of Leaf nation. -
Funny, I was just thinking the same thing. :)

Wonderful Kraven! I knew you would never let me down! Unfortunately, n.4 won’t work … She runs 10 km in 49 min. … I guess my physical prowess cannot impress her very much… But all other points I am going to learn by heart before evening comes!! ;D ;D Gio You're very welcome. Sorry about #4. Not every item will apply of course. Since you're a good guy I thought of a few other things which might help the evening go smoothly. 11. Tell her you are very interested in getting married because you're running out of clean socks and underwear and that fridges don't stock themselves. 12. Tell her you can't wait to have kids because your company owns an interest in some coal mines and some of those tunnels are too small for grown men. 13. Ask her what the most fun time she ever had is. Say yours is when you went to a "Mary Kate and Ashley are 18!" Party. 14. In the context of 1-13 (excluding 4 apparently) be yourself, but not too much. Better to be someone you aren't and let her discover the real you sometime after the 1st anniversary. Hope this helps. 13b. And then their more attractive older sister showed up and things got really interesting. Then ask if she's seen the video of your "party" on the web. Don't forget to ask your server to take a picture of you 2 for the wedding invitations. And to post to Twitter/Facebook and Instagram of course. ;D Be yourself Gio. ;)

I'm a life long Jays fan, but I have to say this years Bo Sox have something special. I like all the guys on the team........................except for traitor Farrell. >:( Those guys deserve a World Series. When Matheny came to pull Lynn, I said out loud, "what are you doing?" I didn't understand the move then and I still don't understand it now. I didn't see a reason to pull him. But I'm old school and I used to pitch. I think a starter should pitch more than 6 innings.

I saw the episode and thought the same as you, generally unimpressed. Even keeping in mind it was "reality TV" and there was editing done, I found it hard to believe she was a CEO and that goes for the entire management team that was in the boardroom at the end. But, who knows how much is scripted and they may very well just be a bunch of poor actors. ;D As for the stores, the one here in Newmarket is in a Walmart plaza close to the road and is always empty. I've been in there at 8 AM on a weekday and a weekend, same thing, empty. They had a few years where they shared a space in the Home Depot, that experiment ended earlier this year due to poor sales. (Heard from a friend who works at the Home Depot that was the reason) Edited to add Starbucks has 2 stores within a 1 KM radius and they're both busy. The Second Cup in the mall is usually pretty busy come to think of it.

Glacier Media up 6% today on CBF coat-tailing. ;D -
Yahoo doesn't recognize stocks that aren't listed anymore, at least I can't get it too.

I know this is something that comes up periodically but is there a place either free or not, of stock prices of companies no longer listed? Before the Globe and Mail revamped its site a couple of years ago they had access to these but I'm pretty sure that functionality is gone. The best suggestion I've had was newspaper archives but for me that would mean going downtown to either the University of Toronto or the Toronto Reference Library. The library here in Newmarket only seems to keep the last 52 weeks worth of papers. Online newspaper archives only list their own content such as articles written by their own staff. Anyone have any luck with an online option?

What made you choose those 2 rather than some of the other beaten down stocks around that time? These were the two I felt I knew the best. There's a story, of course.....and it's etched in our family lore. Sunday March 8(?), 2009, the wife and I are at a car wash and I say, "look, I won't do this if you say no, but Wells Fargo and AXP are down to $10 and they are worth probably 3X that amount. The market thinks they are going under. I don't. I want to put 1/3 into each." She shocked me with an immediate "yes." So I was prepared to make the trade Monday morning....I didn't sleep well, and woke up at 3 AM. Absent-mindedly I turned on CNBC, and bam, there was Buffett. And he basically endorsed them both, you know, the way he tells you without actually saying 'buy the stock.' One thing he noted was their $40BB pre tax pre-provision income and how the company was selling for like 3 X that. Every once in a while we go back to that car wash and reminisce ;D P.S. Some one rudely pointed out later that if you just bought an index of small-cap stocks at that same time, you would have made even more. Some fathers can take their kids to the spot they proposed to their wife and you have the spot you decided on AXP and WFC. ;D Then you can say Buffett came to you during a sleepless night to reinforce the decision. -

Amazon sends me, on average 10 per week and I've only spent about $50 there. The usual emails are for their "deals" and the other one is for titles similar to my last purchase. I got sucked in at Old Navy (owned by The Gap) and gave my real address since they send out coupons, they've been about 3 per week to me. I think my wife gets the same 2 with the same frequency.

Before I clicked the link I had a vision of Biglari writing a book. Something like, "How to Structure Your Company for Shareholder Enrichment", "How to Reverse Split Your Way to Riches"....................hence your laughing. ;D

I download K's and Q's to my laptop....................then forget they're there half the time. ;D But yes, I read them on my laptop. I much prefer paper though, same for books. I'm looking for a tablet/reader type of device but I can't decide what I want yet, cost is the main factor.

That'll be the next rumour from Huffington, Buffett spotted in NYC having dinner with Carl Icahn. ;D

How do dividends factor in your stock valuations? I notice that most people don't mention them at all. I realize a company yielding 1% is negligible in the grande scheme but what about 3 or 4%?

When I read about EBITDA I can't help but think of Charlie Munger calling it bullshit earnings, yet so many people seem to use it. Most of Geoff Gannon's articles cite EBITDA. But I like his thought process in researching the actual company. If I understood the article, this guy uses an industry comp as a basis for EBITDA and cash flow. Different strokes for different folks I guess. It's times like this that I see why people use Buffett's owner earnings number.
