  1. One thing to remember about Buffett and Munger is they both own newspapers. It could be as much as keeping up with the industry as anything else.
  2. The only reference to an ISBN from a website lists it as "null".
  3. FWIW, both the WSJ and FT are available free online under "today's paper". The minor PITA is, any article you may want to read on the WSJ, you need to search the article title in Google news (US edition) to view it free.
  4. My favourite line, when talking about gold,
  5. Reviving an old thread to post Above Average Odds on Sandstorm Metals and Energy and their CEO Nolan Watson From Wiki,
  6. I've seen multiple mentions of the interview he did for OID in 1989. Does anyone know if it's available anywhere? I've seen all the compilation websites that list Walter Schloss writings, interviews etc, but have not found the OID interview.
  7. Unless I missed it, which is entirely possible in my sleep deprived, newborn baby girl state, I saw no mention in the WSJ of Walter's passing. I read it most mornings online and didn't even see anything on the WSJ home page.
  8. Wow, how did you end up meeting him?
  9. I've tried a few sites and they all say removed due to copyright infringement. I'm guessing it's for his clients eyes only.
  10. Our value investing world lost one of the best.
  11. I was a huge Gary Carter fan and Expos fan mostly because of him.
  12. I'll have to look that up.
  13. Big hat tip to for Miguel posting this on Twitter, it seems right up our alley here. http://www.modelthinker-class.org/ https://twitter.com/#!/SimoleonSense Maybe anyone who does sign up for the class can post their thoughts here? I'm sure I'll have some questions along the way. ;D
  14. I've always wanted an "all stock universe" screener. At the very least to cover all publicly traded stocks in North America (including OTC/pinks). I'm not sure if AAII does this though.
  15. Nice write up and thanks for sharing it. I think I said it in another thread a while back, but it's nice to see honest and objective analysis like this. FWIW, I totally hear you about sharing an investment thesis when you're a newer member to a group of more experience investors (I'm on the novice end compared to other members here). But, if you're going to do it anywhere online and get an objective, respectful and constructive criticism, it's this board.
  16. I've never thought of going to a site like Linkedin to research stocks. Nice idea.
  17. I was reading the Graham and Doddsville Fall letter today and Marty Whitman touched on Sears and Lampert when asked about past investments. He spoke of the Kmart debt he bought in '03 and how well it worked out, but had this to say before saying they've sold off all of their SHLD,
  18. Fidelity analysts and Whitney Tilson "gaming the system". I applaud them for the thought they put into this. As someone who has yet to attend an annual meeting, I would me mildly annoyed to trek from near Toronto to hear his fans ask him what he had for lunch yesterday. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203479104577125403745409234.html?mod=ITP_moneyandinvesting_0 I warn you not to look at the comment sections, most spell Buffett with only one "t". ;)
  19. Daniel Kahneman spoke at the Legg Mason TLF recently. (Click under his name on transcript) http://www.thoughtleaderforum.com/default.asp?P=909655&S=945705 There seems to be one pretty interesting speaker a year. 2007 Steven Crist (from the daily racing form). I found a link somewhere to his talk about probabilities etc. at the 2007 forum and loved it. He explains why you never bet on the favourite and why you look for mis-pricings on the line, similar to investing. Crist's talk is what made my put, Thought Leader Forum, in a Google alert so I don't miss when the forum transcripts are up on the LM website each year. 2010 Thomas D. Seeley Professor, Chairman of the Department of Neurobiology & Behavior, Cornell University No TLF in 2009 since the world as they knew it was ending. ;D 2008 Dan Ariely 2006 Two that look interesting, Robert Sapolsky, Professor of Biology and Neurology Stanford University "Stress and its Impact on Behavior and Decision Making" Elke U. Weber, Professor of Psychology Columbia Business School "The Determinants of Risk-Taking" 2005 Susan Decker, CFO Yahoo! on where the company would be in 10 years. (I haven't read it but I wonder if she foresaw what is going on today with Yang and the gang, possible merger or being taken over.) 2004 James Surowiecki, author of The Wisdom of Crowds.
  20. Why wasn't I that smart as a kid. ;D
  21. How reliable are the financial statements in India?
  22. I hadn't looked at the date until I read your post. :D
  23. I agree, it's one of the few blogs I look forward to reading.
  24. I've got to be honest. My first thought when I read this was, he's pretty smart (which nobody would ever deny of Klarman anyway) and good on him for seeing something most others didn't.
