I agree. I think in rare instances these guys buy a team for an ROI (at least not a large one). But here in T.O., Rogers bought the Jays and then Skydome for next to nothing. They've successfully vertically integrated the game, in their building and broadcast on their TV and radio stations. Some say Ted was building his empire before he passed away but even if he was it looks like a pretty good move. Rogers shareholders may have a different opinion though. ;D

When Robert Rodriquez commented he kept his own list of the top 5 holdings in the FPA fund and they significantly outperforming the fund itself, I was curious if the same applied to Tepper, so I tried to backtest it. (I didn't find anything concrete since many have been a part of M&A that I couldn't find old quotes for the periods he held) From that I could see his top positions changed fairly regularly. So yes, he changed his positions quite a bit but the difference between him and Soros is the concentration. Tepper seems to typically hold about 20-30 stocks. IIRC, Soros is an index, a very successful index. ;D

Modern day examples of Buffett's "$100 billion" Moat

Having 2 daughters aged 2 and 5, Disney goes in the Coke/Visa category for me also. Without even knowing or realizing it was happening, our 2 are obsessed with Disney Princesses, Minnie Mouse and our 5 year old has been asking about going to Disney for a while. Don't get me wrong, we think it's great. Every kid needs Disney.............it just happened so fast. ;D -
Value Investing Podcast by Manual of Ideas
augustabound replied to fwallstreet's topic in General Discussion
New podcast just released and a familiar name James East. :) https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/value-investing-podcast-thought/id642016120?mt=2 I'm going to listen on my way to work today, not sure how similar it will be to the link biaggio posted here. Either way, I'm sure it's worth listening to. http://www.cornerofberkshireandfairfax.ca/forum/general-discussion/how-simplifying-your-investment-process-can-make-you-a-better-investor/msg117928/#msg117928 -
Oh no, no, no, that won't do. That schedule is much to light. The other Tiger Mom's in the neighbourhood have found time between math and piano for learning about physics. :P

We have 2 girls (2 and 4yrs) and we're pretty happy to have a mall, library and city buses. Just out of curiosity, why did you choose math tutoring for your kids?
-
I'm 6'2", so that means all of you guys are short? :P

Very nice. Pics with the Keg girl outnumber your pics with Prem, Sanj, Norm and Francis combined. ;D So, is Gio about 7' tall?

BRK.A Share Reaching a Milestone
augustabound replied to Buffett_Groupie's topic in Berkshire Hathaway
I voted Irrelevant because he said, "Have fun". If it was a serious question of the value of BRK, I would have ignored it. ;D But my answer would be the same. -
Nice, thanks for the links. My reading pile is getting longer.................

Value Investing Podcast by Manual of Ideas
augustabound replied to fwallstreet's topic in General Discussion
I listened to many of these and they were all excellent. Great resource. Make sure to find the extended episode about Henry Singleton. But I didn't know Geoff Had done one, I'll listen for sure, thank you for mentioning it! It's the most recent one, from March I believe. -
Value Investing Podcast by Manual of Ideas

When I travel for work I load up the iPhone with these. Every interview has some great insights. I just listened to the Geoff Gannon interview today actually. :) -
You need to learn the way I did, go through all the posts from the start. I'm about half way through the general forum and I'm going to do the investment ideas. Liberty did the same and I think we both agree that it's time well spent. Sometimes it's not a matter of who you believe to be the smartest but it's the posters you understand the best.

Free Kindle edition. I'm not sure if it's a daily deal or not, it was just a fluke I found it. http://www.amazon.ca/Autobiography-Andrew-Carnegie-ebook/dp/B004UKDO7M/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1396659729&sr=8-3&keywords=Andrew+Carnegie

Yes. Without embellishment, 500 hours is way on the low side over time for me when unusual value resides in a business, sometimes by a degree of magnitude for a very interesting company. :) What would a ballpark estimate be for you for an insurance company? And does your industry expertise play into that number if you start a looking at a new company?
-
That right there, is your margin of safety. ;D
-
Totally agree with this.

I just did the same thing. ;D I'm about a quarter of the way though the general section and I started with the 3 "Ask" threads, Packer, Eric and Kraven. There's some gold in those general sub-forums, especially from '09 -'10. Shows just how smart this forum is. So far I'm about mid way through 2010 and I found the strategy about the members who used preferred shares early in '09 hugely enlightening. After general I'm going to start the investment ideas section. It's time well spent for me.

Buffett backs $1 billion NCAA bracket contest
augustabound replied to dcollon's topic in Berkshire Hathaway
Apparently there was an opt-in for him that he declined so he could have been in both contests. He tweeted to WEB asking if there would be something for him anyway. Yeah, cuz that's how these things work. ;D -
Buffett backs $1 billion NCAA bracket contest
augustabound replied to dcollon's topic in Berkshire Hathaway
Apparently there's one left. "Brad Binder's Breathtaking Bracket" ...................cheesy. https://tournament.fantasysports.yahoo.com/quickenloansbracket/2030973 He's got Stephen Austin over UCLA which is the upset which will be his downfall. ;D Interesting, he has an all Michigan final. As an Irish fan, I cannot support the Wolverines in a championship game of any kind. May the curse of Chris Webber continue this year. 8) -
Buffett backs $1 billion NCAA bracket contest
augustabound replied to dcollon's topic in Berkshire Hathaway
Thanks to the boys of Mercer College, there are only 16 brackets left intact. (I don't know how many official brackets were submitted) -
My comment about patiently awaiting the book release served double duty for Guy and Sanjeev.

Holy height difference. ;D Is Mohnish sporting a moustache there? I'm patiently awaiting the book release also.
