my thought it actually can matter if you have too much. There's a threshold value, if exceeded , the entire IRA become taxable.. it's therefore called "IRA bomb". I think I read about this a few years back, so I am not sure about this.

It’s same as sell a ATM put. You get a bit less premium but u dont have to commit the capital to buy the stock (get paid on on the interest earning cash).

i got my numbers from https://silverinstitute.org but i think in term of how much above ground silver inventory there is, there’s a lot of guess works. But in recent years, solar panels, ev cars, are driving new demands of silver. On the other hand, Buffett is right it’s just commodities. U will have buy it and just sit and stare at it till next person really needs it and pay a lot more.

Buffett/Berkshire - general news

Isn't if BRk grows book value or earning by 20%, we are back to median PE/PB? So that's just 2-3 years of passive growth.. On the other hand, the stdev of BRK is very low, and upside optionality is high (when's there's crisis), and that worth to pay for. -

This is a few years back when someone asked about Buffett's thesis in buying silver. Back then, silver had a demand/supply deficit of 100m oz. Now it's about 140m. Everything Buffett said back then (including why he sold etc..) still applies. It's not a great investment -- it's something to sit on, but may not be a bad idea at current environment.
-
Indeed. It’s called “devil’s metal” but the demand/supply deficits have lasted a few years now. I think with gold so high, silver is a good inflation hedge. When inflation is high, mines become more expensive to run. Also jewelry maker will use more silver
-
Yeah, maybe because the news about Saudi increasing investments in solar energy. Solar panels uses silver. And there’s really no quick ways to increase silver supply because it’s usually a bi-product of other mines.

If you work in compliance, you can see everyone’s PA trades, which are awesome. But if you work in compliance, especially if it’s in a bank, i suspect you wont be allowed to do any PA trade.

Macro thread - Why is the market up/down?

Hedge fund blewing up, impo, is not going to cause big market panic. Nowaday hedge funds industry are very sophisticated — blew ups are frequent and counter parties know how to limit their risks. The hedge funds also tend to be sophisticated and unwind quickly. it’s always the economy that matters in the end. If the trarrif wars keep going.. -
Not sure about GLD, though it’s gone parabolic recently. i bought some silver. Silver has sustained demand -supply deficits.

The one driver on a train cost next to nothing compared the stuffs carried on the train, and the driver doesn’t do much driving— it’s mostly things like when the train in on a platform, a human need to check safety, etc. In a sense , train never had a driver like cars

gfp, I'm curious what's the thesis for buying TLT? If we have a recessions and feds cut rate, TLT will go up, but by how much ? Maybe 30%? On the hand, the tariff will cause inflations, and I feel it's not going away, which will force the feds to keep rates high. After all, so far people are still buying and having jobs.

Bought bunch of SLV (silver etf)

yeah, this idea of selling OTM put is appealing to me, but then when I realize it’s economically equivalent to buy a stock and simultaneously sell a ITM calls, it feels less appealing to me .. Might as well just DCA a stock over time then keep buying and sell ITM calls

thanks! I didn’t know about this

I think i read somewhere they found it’s Japanese dumping treasuries (but now china knows this works and may use it)

Anyone considering SLV? gold is surging yet gold/silver ratio is now at 100. The ratio’s highest point is 130, i think, reached during covid. Silver is also interesting that it has industrial use, especially in solar energy , and anything related to electricity. And there’s not many, if any silver mines. It can only be mined as a by product of other metals. So it can be in shortage. i’m thinking to sell some SLV puts but the option premiums is very low it’s like 30% implied vol.

There have been some discussions here previously about using selling puts to buy stocks at lower costs. Apparently, one could also use another option strategy called “buy-write” to the same result. The strategy is you buy the stock and then sell an ITM calls. If the stocks goes up, your stock gets called away. If the stocks goes down below your strike, you keep the stocks. It’s same as writing OTM puts, except currently selling calls have more premiums because interest rate is high — it compensates for lost interest of the cash you will spend to buy the stock in the “buy write” strategy. anyone considering this strategy? one thing i am not certain is the tax treatment. I think in both cases, when options expires, u pay income tax on the premiums. But if your stock get called away/you be put the stock, ur cost basis is adjusted by the premium. So it seems selling puts have more tax advantages than doing selling ITM calls..
