What was your last discretionary purchase?
boilermaker75 replied to Nell-e's topic in General Discussion
Cool pencil! My last purchase was a used book off Amazon called "Mathematics Applied to Deterministic Problems in the Natural Sciences", which I will read entirely for fun. So I out-nerded you there by a considerable margin. You did! -

Doctors and experts - be wary of their opinions at times

"Research has shown that, generally speaking, once a person reaches that level of “acceptable” performance and automaticity, the additional years of “practice” don’t lead to improvement. If anything, the doctor or the teacher or the driver who’s been at it for twenty years is likely to be a bit worse than the one who’s been doing it for only five, and the reason is that these automated abilities gradually deteriorate in the absence of deliberate efforts to improve." Ericsson, Anders. Peak: Secrets from the New Science of Expertise (p. 13). Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Kindle Edition. -
I noticed last night the book is rated 4.9 out of 5 stars with over 600 reviews on AMZN.

I hope not also, but at the close I went ahead and wrote some 195 and 197.5 strike puts thinking 200 might be in the past.

I have only recently had the facility to use limit orders on US stocks, so I don't know how it works inside and out, but would a Good Til Cancelled (or Day) limit order have given you a good chance of picking up some stock below $29? I take it you're saying you missed out on buying the stock for <$29 rather than on selling another put, though I guess you could even put a limit order on selling a $29-strike Aug 3rd or Aug 10th put at, say $0.50 minimum price (assuming selling implies writing the put rather than shorting it). I guess there are some downsides to leaving a limit order in place, especially if you have less cash than you might end up spending if your limit order fills and you get put-to on your put options and cannot or would rather not use any margin. I'm guessing the other reason is if there's material news affecting the company in question that causes permanent impairment to its value, but then that's a risk with selling puts too. I'd be interested in your thoughts as an experienced put writer, boilermaker75. Yes a GTC order would have worked and I do use them sometimes, but probably not enough. I had several accounts that I wanted to do some trading in this morning. I had some BRKB put options expire on Friday, so in a couple of accounts I wrote some BRKB puts. (I am short BRKB puts with strike prices ranging from 185 to 197.50 and expiration dates ranging from Aug 3 to Aug 24). I intended to write some SYF 29-strike puts if SYF declined some in my IB account. So when I noticed that SYF was below $29, I had to log onto my IB account, which takes a while, and SYF was up quite a bit by the time I was logged in. SYF is back down some so I am looking to write some 29-strike puts, Aug 17 expiration.

Some 29.5 strike, Aug 3 expiration for $0.60 per share Too slow today, SYF dipped below $29 this morning but was back up before I could do anything about it. :(

I've heard of that happening. That would have been a great experience for your son! There were at least 20 bald eagles, many of them young ones that we were watching. The parents were probably teaching the young ones how to fish. Eagles behind the McDonalds in Sitka, AK

BRK Surplus Cash- Optics of a Buyback
boilermaker75 replied to nickenumbers's topic in Berkshire Hathaway
Daniel, Several CoBF board members haven't considered Berkshire fairly valued recently, and have been adding to their positions. Indeed. BRK was my largest position and I have added 25% to it over the last few months. Plus a lot of written put options that have expired out-of-the money. -

Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance - Angela Duckworth
boilermaker75 replied to Jurgis's topic in Books
I am reading this book, but haven't formed an opinion yet because I am only on page 66. But there is a story about Buffett that I had not heard before and wondering if anyone else has, and if you know the original source? Buffett is talking to his pilot about pursuing dreams. Buffett gives a three step process. 1. List 25 career goals. 2. Circle the 5 highest priority goals. 3. Ignore the other 20 at all costs. -
To me, absolutely stunning what you have pulled off now for so many times during the last few months, boilermaker. Tapping the market for cash, as was it some kind of high quality beer pipeline with a hole. You really need to report here, when you switch to oxygen. [boilermakers don't cheat with oxygen on Everest or K2.] John, and the worst thing that can happen is I own more BRKB! I'm not even sure you could consider it a very good book for its time. Everything in Klarman's book - including the the title - was lifted straight from Benjamin Graham, who expressed the essence of value investing much earlier and more eloquently in The Intelligent Investor. There is little to be learned from Klarman if one has even a passing familiarity with Graham's work. I read Margin of Safety several years ago, but that is my recollection. I didn't find anything new, or unique, in it.
