Oh yeah, the Sint-Michiels bridge is one of the best and most famous spots here to see the most impressive architectural landmarks all at once! What is crazy is that the Sint Michiels church (it was to your right side when you took the first picture) was meant to have a tower of 134m in height initially in the 1600's. To compare, the Sint Baafs cathedral is "only" 89 meters. Sadly they ran out of money back in the day so it go stuck at 80-something meters and a flat tower roof. I've jokingly posited amongst friends before that they should make a big wooden terrace on the flat surface of the Sint Michiels Tower, ask an entrance fee for what surely would be the best historical landscape view in Belgium and invest it back in the city! In any case, it shows the absolute wealth we also had in the The Netherlands / Flemish regio at the time.

I studied for years in Ghent and it's really beautiful and a very pleasant place to stay. I've visited most of the major cities in Europe and the cities that charmed me most are Barcelona and Prague. Prague is like the exponent of Ghent. It's like entering a medieval fairy tale.

The picture of the bridge, looking at the two cathedrals, it's like an AI image.. it's just too perfect. One of the best pictures I have ever taken. Even when I was there I remember thinking this place is barely real. I went to Bruges in Belgium, it was nice, but I much preferred Ghent.

Insurance Brokers (MMC, AON, AJG, WTW, BRO)
adventurer replied to tnathan's topic in General Discussion
Thank you. In that case insurance brokers may prove to be a decent investment during hard markets (low stock price due to lower earnings) assuming the cycle will reverse at some point in time, correct? As a simplified approach. -
Wow, your pond is way bigger and better than mine. Is the heron still an issue are any of those fish still alive? I’ve always wondered, do the fish tolerate frogs in the pond?

Just like his other construction projects: https://www.yahoo.com/news/politics/articles/the-paint-is-already-peeling-in-trumps-renovated-washington-reflecting-pool-205842336.html The Iranian Regime should make sure Trump and his company aren't the contractor for the Iranian $300B reparation rebuild! Cheers!
-
Once again thanks @Viking, so much useful information in there. I am going to pitch Fairfax at an investment conference (if all goes well) and your compendium will be a big resource that helps build that.
-
Will do that next time I'm in Brussels. Was there last October, but didn't have time to go further north. Cheers!
-
Nah, cut off the shipping of beluga caviar and vodka...the world would crater tomorrow and give Putin $300B plus Melania! Cheers!
-
Hmmm, Canada handled it pretty well considering they broke one of the key player's leg! Qatar got off lucky considering the mood of the crowd could have gotten rotten after that. Cheers!
-
Canada-Qatar 6:0 uffff Between RasLaffan incident (hitting the checkbook) and this game (hitting the pride), I don’t think Ottawa is going to get much infrastructure investment from Qatar.

It's Putin, who's refusing to come to the table. Moscow refinery attack was pay-back time for Russia hitting historical monastery in Kyiv a few days ago. Ukraine, please carry on. Next thing is likely POTUS negotiating a MOU with Putin related to the Russian-Ukrainian war without involving Ukraine and Europe, where POTUS accepts that Ukranie and its European supporters shall pay Russia USD 600 billion in war damages, and when Ukraine and European supporters says no, POTUS throws himself on the floor in a hysterical tantrum. There are rumors among observers of what's going on in Russia, that Elvira Nabiullina now hasen't been seen around for a while [is she removed, terminated?], and that Putins paranoia is progressing.

We're dealing with people that I think are very rational people, and they were nice to deal with," Mr. Trump said of Iran's current leadership during an event at the G7 summit in France on Tuesday "They were strong people, smart people. … They're not radicalized and they're looking to help their country." https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-goals-iran-war-and-what-hes-saying-now-nuclear-missiles-regime-change/ @cubsfan @73 Reds So Donald says the above...what ya think?....for 40+ years the conventional wisdom on Iran has been that they are ideological nut jobs, irrational and a suicidal death cult who dont care about their own people. Now they are rational, nice, not radicalized and just want to help the people in their country! You guys wanted Trump to shake things up.....he most certainly has re: Iran/US/Israel relations if this is the new party line!

Another big slug of CVRX. Now the 2nd largest position in my portfolio.

Probably 60% of their revenue and profits are SaaS. The shares would be way lower if it were their sole business.
-
Perhaps. But the lessons already transpire to Europe and the US and likely China as we speak and will be adapted in the respective defense industry and strategy. It has become clear that you can saturate just about any defense system with relative cheap drones.

I think you mean highs. INR is down less than 1% this quarter to date. The big decline in the oil price is a big positive. Ben Watsa added 40k shares at $17.55 a few months ago before the war ended. Anchorage could IPO or IDBI could be bought. Both accelerate book value per share growth when they happen. Q2 as it stands now looks good as the listed companies are up a lot and the private companies will continue to accrete. The FX hit is also tiny compared to last quarter.

I noticed several days last month and this month that the semis go down while the saas and hyperscalers go up..it seems already the market sees the see-saw nature of this dynamic.

no plans currently. If tickets were more affordable i definitely would.

Ukrainian defense companies will be great buys when they start to go public.

You’re right that Iranian players are seen as national heroes back home.
