LowIQinvestor Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 I wanted to compile a list of obvious duopolies. If you have some ideas, please contribute. I think this list will be ripe for some investment ideas. 1) Verizon & At&t 2) FedEx & UPS 3) Visa & Mastercard (?)
zarley Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Seagate and Western Digital in the HDD space are pretty close. Those two control a little more than 80% of the HDD shipments with Toshiba at around 15%.
Philip Morris IV Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Boeing & Airbus Western Union & Moneygram Fannie & Freddie? ;D If the RAI-LO merger goes through, Altria & RJ Reynolds

LongHaul Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Google and Bing Cable and DSL broadband provider Duracell and Energizer (mostly) I would not put ATT and Verizon in that bucket as TMobile and Sprint are a real threat.

KCLarkin Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 htz avis No, I think Enterprise is both bigger and better (though private).
BargainValueHunter Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Republicans and Democrats (though neither have IPO'd yet) ;)
deadspace Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 Alliance one and universal corp There are extra lessons to be learned with these two as you will see that having a duopoly is no guarantee of great returns
augustabound Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 Republicans and Democrats (though neither have IPO'd yet) ;) If there was only a way to make money off that. ;)
LC Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 Republicans and Democrats (though neither have IPO'd yet) ;) If there was only a way to make money off that. ;) Running for election is one way. 24/7 political news channels is another, TV/radio which air political commercials, hotels for political conventions, etc
Philip Morris IV Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Alliance one and universal corp There are extra lessons to be learned with these two as you will see that having a duopoly is no guarantee of great returns Whoa, what the heck happened to Alliance One? All-time low and tobacco is not declining (worldwide).
deadspace Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Alliance one and universal corp There are extra lessons to be learned with these two as you will see that having a duopoly is no guarantee of great returns Whoa, what the heck happened to Alliance One? All-time low and tobacco is not declining (worldwide). Well its interesting what happened.... The big tobacco companies started to threaten them with vertical integration which injected some heavy fear into management When Im dealing with a duopoly and the supply demand situation is in your favour I expect you to raise prices. AOI refused to raise pricing as per their conference call because it may lead to the large tobacco companies further taking away business with more vertical integration (why the large companies want to be in this low margin business is beyond me? But that seems to be their fear) Couple that with high debts and unstable political situations in some of the areas they operate and this has been a disaster SO much for the power of duopolies.
rkbabang Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Republicans and Democrats (though neither have IPO'd yet) ;) If there was only a way to make money off that. ;) Running for election is one way. How about a moral way for someone who doesn't feel comfortable making a living through theft, extortion, and violence? And since someone already brought up politics I'll add to the duopoly list: Jesus vs. Mohammad.

Well Islam considers Jesus to be a prophet as well, actually in Islam he is supposed to return to defeat the Al-Masih ad-Dajjal (essentially the equivalent to the anti-Christ) near the day of judgement. Yes, I should have worded that Jesus worshipers Vs. Mohammad followers.
yadayada Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 That would be a oligopoly. Hinduism is not far behind islam.
