Just wondering out loud.  I might have enough to retire but kids still in HS, live in US where you pay out of pocket for your healthcare.  Plus market sure feels frothy.  Also it'd be tough giving up job with smart people on cutting edge, nice benefits and facilities and pretty compensation.  Though some days...

Don't quit unless it's just too toxic for your health. How old are you?

I think toxicity has several levels.... It can kill you immediately .... or for most, it's s slow dose of arsenic poisoning each day.

Right on. I'd much rather have a barrel of arsenic dropped square on my head.

I didn't know what other thread to put this story, so I thought it might make sense to revive this thread.

Sometimes eff you money just isn't enough!

Did anyone ever have any doubt that this knucklehead would one day be in financial problems?

He’s no Oscar De La Hoya! 😊 Cheers!

He has made a billion from boxing and apparently just blows it all the time.  Buying stuff never made me happy, but apparently it makes others happy to blow their money on cars and watches.  He should be a multi-billionaire by now.

The stuff most billionaires buy doesn’t really appeal to me.

But I think it would be really cool to beautify/improve my city with schools, museums, ornate fountains, bridges, etc.

I would like to be heavily involved and the patron of an elite charter type school in my community (I have a lot of thoughts on that)

I would like to have a beautiful parcel of private forest land like 10,000 acres + in one spot close to my home.

Boats, planes, art, watches, jewels, wine collections no thanks.

Everybody benefits and can enjoy what you propose.  In Mayweather's case, only he and his posse enjoy.  Very different desires and very different outcomes.

I've also dreamt of owning a nice big piece of land (100-1000 acres)...unfortunately, the stuff I can afford is a good 5 hours from Vancouver.  I wouldn't get to use it as often as I would like.  I'm sure I could move to other parts of Canada and buy within an hour from a city...but then I don't get to live in or near Vancouver.  Cheers!

That's why he had IOUs at multiple jewelers.  It was going to the schools and fountains.

Could you buy a Cessna and have your cake and eat it too?

I've long been fascinated by rich people who throw their life away in search of money they don't need. Insider trading, theft, etc.

I can somewhat understand holding up a bank if you're broke. But this kind of stuff....?

Brilliant idea.  One thing that really makes cities and towns beautiful are trees and managed green spaces along roads, houses.  That’s one thing I notice and really appreciate about some American cities.  And it invites in all sorts of wildlife which you don’t really get in the UK in built up area.

Ditto.  Part of me wants to farm it but as I get older the more I want to buy an area up, and rewild it as a private park.  If it wasn’t for my kids I’d have small ponds all over my property.  I have one pond and the place is jumping with frogs 🐸

I actually just meant buying 100 acres of land 5 hours away and then flying there from Vancouver, but agreed about your take. It's crazy.

America is good about natural spaces. England and Europe are much better on city beautification. I am assuming the very rich and monarchies paid for it all many years ago. Americans think you are crazy if you don’t build something as cheaply as possible unless it’s a private home or private club or something. Then they go and spend 20k every summer to go vacation in Europe. Aesthetics in your living area are very important to mental well being and happiness imo.

Yep, the buildings in Europe are a lot nicer, the older ones at least.  Modern buildings are often truly ugly.  I had a friend who used to say that beauty of a city and landscape really mattered.  He took his own life some years ago unfortunately.  He wasn’t right about many things, but ive come to realise he was right about beauty and how it makes you feel is important.

No, I couldn't afford like a Citation.  Really nice twin prop...yup.  But then I have to learn to fly...that would be scary!

The other option, which I'm leaning to, is to just go live somewhere different for a few months out of each year...get it out of my system.  On a nice cabin on a huge piece of land...just a nearby town with necessities and medical...etc.

Cheers!

I've been dealing with pros and cons of having a second home/vacation residence, and I feel like going somewhere a few months a year is optimal (if you can swing it with your work/family obligations), and then just getting a commercial flight and keeping a car in the garage can work out great!

No, but I would keep guns in the cabin.  My dream as a little kid was to be like the Cartwrights from Bonanza!  Huge stone fireplace, horses, a big spread, etc...even a live-in cook named Hop Sing!  😊  Cheers!

That's the most likely and rational solution.  Cheers!

We had a pond and loved it. We put a couple of goldfish in it and then were giving goldfish away as they multiplied. Frogs fond it. Our daughter won a gold fish at a carnival by throwing a ping pong ball into a jar. That fish was over 20 years old living in the pond when a blue heron found our pond. 😠
