leftcoast
It's really interesting how a lot of ideas pop into your mind when you're trying to just focus on your breathing and the moment. The most common profound thoughts that pop into my head while trying to stay focused: - I wonder how much time is left on the clock. - My eyelid/ankle/elbow is itchy. - In a guided meditation: It feels like he hasn't said anything for a long time. Maybe the audio track got paused. - In a guided meditation: Wouldn't it be funny if he suddenly screamed "BOO!"? - I'm doing it! I'm doing it! I'm maintaining focus! Oh wait, oops... merkhet
- In a guided meditation: It feels like he hasn't said anything for a long time. Maybe the audio track got paused. When I first started, I used to think this all the time too!
augustabound
http://www.spring.org.uk/2013/12/meditation-can-debias-the-mind-in-only-15-minutes.php Across two separate experiments, the researchers tested this by giving one group of participants a 15-minute mindfulness meditation induction. Then they were given a business scenario which was designed to test the sunk cost bias. In comparison to a control condition, thinking mindfully doubled the number of people who could avoid the sunk cost bias.
meiroy
I have done it off and on for ~10 years. I did an MBSR course. Also, have spent a small amount of time at thich naht hahn's centers in France and New York. Lapsed right now. But I am running again. Yeah, this happens to me a well, not just with meditation but with exercise, die etc. It's a bit like the company who has some quality issues at their suppliers so they decide to invest in a team of QCs. Three years later the CEO goes over the numbers where he notices that they practically have no quality issues while there's a whole bunch of QC people with high cost. So, he decides they are unnecessary and fire 'em all. So, thank you guys for starting this thread, I got some Sam Harris material and Jon Kabat-Zinn, there's so much more to learn about it. jawn619
i've been doing it for a little less than half a year now. http://www.amazon.com/10-Happier-Self-Help-Actually-Works-A/dp/0062265423 check this book out. I think it's a good way to describe how effective meditation is. 10% happier is a good ROI, and i think it compounds every year.

Jurgis
did anyone here try sensory deprivation tank? You float in salt water that is the same as your body temperature. In complete darkness without any sound. So it basicly feels like your floating in deep space. And I heard of a few people who said it was actually life changing. http://i.imgur.com/BHHK7S9.jpg It is sorta like forced meditation. When your brain does not get new sensory information after a while your head becomes completely empty. Just read the thread. Yes, I have done sensory deprivation tank. Nothing special. 8) Caveat: I've been practicing meditation for over 10 years when I did sensory deprivation.

bargainhunter
I just went on a 10 day vipassana meditation retreat -- and I highly recommend it for anybody who wants to jumpstart their practice. That said, it is really hard work and you have to be prepared for a bit of mental and physical pain (no talking allowed, just two meals a day, and a grueling schedule of sitting cross legged for up to 10 hours a day). I have no doubt the experience will make me a better investor (although that is merely a byproduct - not the goal). I really believe that our biggest enemy as investors is not the Fed, the Chinese economy, Donald Trump or whatever -- it is our own mind. It is our tendency to do dumb things when we are feeling restless, bored or panicky. Meditation helps you slow down and pause before making the kind of knee-jerk decisions that routinely get us in trouble in investing -- and our everyday lives. Anyway, happy to elaborate if anybody is interested.
Homestead31
Tim Ferriss did a podcast centered around mediation... sort of http://fourhourworkweek.com/2015/07/31/tara-brach/ anyway, the woman on the podcast, tara brach, has a website that supposedly has a bunch of different guided meditations. I haven't checked it out yet myself, but i have seen her mentioned several times recently, and seen a lot of positive reviews of the material on her site.
