CRBU, picked up a few before close. Market was a sea of red today, CRBU has been strong over the last weeks and today up 3%. Maybe something is brewing.

Argentinian ADRs https://topforeignstocks.com/foreign-adrs-list/the-full-list-of-argentina-adrs/ I have no special insight into any of these names, but most of them are down 75-95% from late 2017 when Argentina issued 100 year bonds. I think the banks by themselves are probably fine, but there is no telling what the government will do. Lottery tickets. But you asked for contrarian ideas, so ...

LOL. It all sounds great until you realize how flawed people are. Often not even within the same family can people get on the same page when it comes to use of property, money etc. Maybe with some kind of rating system, where people with a low rating get excluded from the network. Oh wait, that's a Back Mirror episode...

I found a nice site that calculates the S&P500 inflation adjusted total return: https://dqydj.com/sp-500-return-calculator/ Taking all the years when inflation was above 5%, January 1969 to January 1983, nominally the S&P 500 gained 2.5% annualized without dividends, and 6.9% with dividends. However the Inflation adjusted total return with reinvesting all dividends was -0.5% annualized, barely preserving purchasing power. (Well, and then there is taxes on dividends…)

It occurred to me that everybody is really looking at wrong numbers all the time, by not adjusting for inflation. People KNOW about inflation, but don't mentally adjust every number for it. For example with earnings coming up, company X growing sales by 10% yoy does not really mean much, if (real) inflation is already around 10%. Or compare this chart, a more or less smooth ride since 1940, right? https://www.multpl.com/s-p-500-historical-prices To this one: https://www.multpl.com/inflation-adjusted-s-p-500 The inflation adjusted chart shows just how excrutiating the period from 1968 to 1982 was, which was nominally just a sideways market. It does not included dividends however, which softened the loss of purchasing power somewhat I suppose. And the current bear market is already down close to 30%, once you factor in inflation. Sorry if this was obvious to people here...

I have been on a listening binge to the Youtube videos of ColdFusion about financial scandals (mostly there is no need to watch, it is all in the narration). They seem well researched. For example Enron, Worldcom, Theranos, Nikola, Wirecard, Archegos, Terra Luna. -

All these doomsday graphs almost make me bullish again. I'm sure there are valid points in there, but when you combine data with two y-axes left and right with different scales you can show almost anything. Also, with linear (not logarithmic) scales everything tends to looks like a hockey stick. -
My Google sheet with BRK's stock holdings is a quarter out of date, but a rough guess would be current "realtime" BV around $210.

Don’t jinx it by saying ‘easy money’ lol. Selling 200 strike puts on March 4, 2020 was easy money, too - five months later.

Sounds bullish for BABA. Incidentally BABA has stealthily marched up ~50% from its lows.

Is Berkshire excited about the market turmoil?
backtothebeach replied to crs223's topic in Berkshire Hathaway
Unfortunately not, Markel's stock holdings are 13.5% Berkshire (https://www.dataroma.com/m/holdings.php?m=MKL), but they only own 0.1% of Berkshire, the company. -

Thanks for posting a quick summary and not just the link!

I just updated my graph of historical S&P500 index drawdowns up to the latest prices and thought I'd share. (May 12 is the thin line on the right, down ~19% from ATH).

If, as a client, I want to change a flight to a different date and it happens to be more expensive, I have to pay the difference. If the airline changes my direct flight to an indirect flight which would have been cheaper to buy when I first purchased, they should not just get away with it. That said, complaining usually goes nowhere. I have, however, used https://www.airhelp.com and got a nice refund once. Rules in Europe are quite strict, not sure about the U.S.: "Delayed flights: you may be able to claim compensation if your flight arrived 3 hours or more late. Cancelled flights: you may be eligible for compensation if your flight was cancelled less than 14 days before it was due to depart. Overbookings: you are owed compensation any time you are denied boarding through no fault of your own — so long as you didn't voluntarily give up your seat. We should note that if extraordinary circumstances were involved, arirlines are under no obligation to pay compensation. Examples of extraordinary circumstances include bad weather, travel restrictions, and air traffic control strikes. Though these situations cause delays and cancellations, the airline isn't at fault, so can't be expected to offer compensation. Remember these are European flight regulations and so only apply to flights departing from an EU airport, or flights landing in the EU with a European airline."

Looking for a quality place to do a check up, complete blood work, ultra sounds, maybe a sleep study, 24 hour ECG, etc., paid out of pocket. Possibly in Europe (some private hospital in Portugal?). Any ideas?
