  1. I had an iPhone 6 that lasted more than 5 years before upgrading to the 11. I'm waiting to hear from Apple regarding an approval code to get BestBuy to look at it. Until then, I'm fine going phone-less. Went out with friends last night and tonight and managed to find much more productive things to do with my face and hands than just randomly finger banging a phone and staring at nothing.
  2. I missed this earlier. I never would've imagined Jeff Beck doing Puccini.
  3. The nearest Apple store is either in Metairie or Tallahassee (3 1/2 hours either way). Apple pointed me to BestBuy and I went in yesterday after class. BestBuy pointed me back to Apple to get a CS code for them to look at it. I'm actually interested in seeing what happens if I step out of the walled garden with a different mobile device. The major impact that I see would be photo sync. Other than that, I don't see a problem with Pages and Numbers documents since most of my work is done on the Mac or iPad. There might be some changes WRT calendar and reminders which I primarily use on mobile but rarely on the other 2 platforms. I've gotten pretty comfortable with being able to access desktop documents via mobile (this has been a useful but rare occurrence). I know I'm probably just being stubborn but hey, something breaks and you find a new way to work that frequently produces better results. On another note, a friend of mine has a newer Samsung (can't remember which), and he took a photo of the moon which produced absolutely stunning detail. No tripod or other stabilizing hardware. I took a photo of the same moon with my iPhone and it looked like crap. Not knocking iPhone photo and video quality for general purposes and I know you can only take so many photos of the moon but damn.
  4. The chemical you're thinking of here would be rohypnol. In what world is rape not wrong? I can only think of one scenario where you're dating a chick who likes it rough.
  5. Patience has resulted in hitting a stinker bid at $48 for C that's been marinating for a bit. I've got another one in at $46 that would fill a 2% position.
  6. The Wells Fargo stepped in to complete the massacre.
  7. Sweating while having flashbacks from Intro to Philosophy. My big takeaway from that course was learning to adhere to the Intellectual Code of Conduct (linked before). I still succumb to logical fallacies. Watching my Mom (dialysis patient), go into horrible personality swings when her electrolytes got off (potassium is a huge culprit), also helped hammer home the lessons from Intro to Psychology and Biology regarding chemicals and their effects on us. Anyone ever been hangry?
  8. Checked the lightning port and removed a small bit of lint with a toothpick. It didn't help. My preferred solution involves zero cash outlay. I'm a principled idiot and right or wrong, don't believe this is a coincidence. I do enjoy working cross platform(s) and use most of the native iOS/OSX apps (Pages, Numbers, iCal, Notes, etc.) I won't ditch the MacBook mainly because I prefer Logic Pro over all the other digital audio workstations. It's seriously not that much of an inconvenience and there seems to be some legit options. As a Google shareholder I'd be ok with buying a Pixel (if the following link proves to be true). https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/7129740?hl=en
  9. People can also be coerced into doing things they would ordinarily not do as per the Milgram Shock and Stanford Prison experiments.
  10. Good suggestion but no, unfortunately I don't have one. I think I'm going to just go phone-less for a while. Started researching the Pixel and Samsung offerings. If Apple can't resolve this, I will most definitely not replace with another iPhone.
  11. I've tried multiple OEM cables (both USB A and C), and cubes (5w and 20w), and also tried connecting to my MacBook Pro M1. Nothing. No lights, no sounds, nothing. I feel like Steve Jobs would've had someone pilloried for this. Contacted support and escalated to a complaint. Also sent feedback. I expect to hear back from them some time after the polar ice caps melt. I've been without a phone for a week now and it's kind of liberating. It hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be. There have been a handful of occasions where I was inconvenienced but whatever. My iPad Pro is now my phone.
  12. hydrogen to helium helium to carbon supernova everything up to iron finally, flowers...
  13. I remember these from when I was a kid and just randomly came across this fun little story. The business was originally started as a place to demonstrate the invention of the flame broiler, but the restaurant itself proved a success and they started rolling them out. Burger Chef apparently developed a lot of other fast food concepts which are still in wide spread use today. The major lesson involves the perils of overly fast expansion. https://www.mashed.com/238779/the-untold-truth-of-burger-chef/
  14. IMO, Joseph Campbell is / was one of the most eloquent speakers on the subject of God. Power of Myth | Ep. 1: 'The Hero’s Adventure' - There are 6 episodes and they're roughly an hour each.
  15. "The common fallacies are usefully divided into three categories: Fallacies of Relevance, Fallacies of Unacceptable Premises, and Formal Fallacies. Many of these fallacies have Latin names, perhaps because medieval philosophers were particularly interested in informal logic. You don’t need to know the Latin names: what’s important is being able to recognize the fallacies." https://www.futurelearn.com/info/courses/logical-and-critical-thinking/0/steps/9131 The straw man made an appearance before this discussion got re-threaded. He is one of my least favorite characters.
  16. My last 6 month policy with GEICO was $569 and I can't remember how much the increase for renewal was but it was enough to prompt me to investigate alternatives. My new Progressive policy is $446 for exactly the same coverage. All GEICO had to do was bump it a few bucks and I never would've looked elsewhere. I'm a safe driver and scored a 98 using GEICO's DriveEasy monitoring program. This doesn't bode well.
  17. Sounds like the definition of modern governing and legislation.
  18. Great summation and I totally agree. Nothings missing for anyone who's been following the businesses. WEB is old. Writing one of these reports demands a lot of time. I'm amazed he continues to do it with such originality.
  19. I was curious as to whether the old guy repurposes material from previous years so I submitted the latest letter to TurnItIn. He gets an A. I always shoot for less than 10% similarity on essays too. Mine keep getting longer though.
  20. The amazing thing about Zappa and the Mothers is that everything you hear is played exactly as written. No variation or improv (playing through normal mistakes, of course). He wrote orchestral pieces with pencil and paper.
  21. This is the way. It's never been easier to do. I use Apple Notes for classwork, investments, home (I documented my entire sprinkler system in Notes, with photos), coins, music, tech guides and more. Making your own quick references teaches you how to do stuff.
