  1. Statement: Open-faced sandwiches don't really exist. The moment it becomes open-faced, it ceases to be a sandwich. Rebuttal: It is incorrect to say that an open-faced sandwich ceases to be a sandwich. Rather, the problem is that it has yet to become a sandwich. It's an unfulfilled promise, not a regression to a less ideal state. I must confess that the sandwich is not even my minor, but rather just a course I took while working toward my PhD in calzones. That's the extent of my contribution to this worthy field of study, though I'd like to add that the one situation that on open-faced sandwich could still be construed as a sandwich is when it was a sandwich prior to the top piece of bread being removed. Technically, this is a de-faced sandwich, not an open-faced sandwich, but I just wanted to clarify that the lack of the top layer to begin with is like an unplanted seed. It may have the promise of becoming a tree, but it is not a tree - at least not yet. I should also add that none of the above is my own idea. These are the thoughts of R. P. Lemongrass, Dean of Sandwich Studies at Flatbread University in Bath, UK. If I'm not mistaken, his seminal work, The Epistemological and Metaphysical Foundations of the Sandwich is to this day THE definitive work in sandwich studies.
  2. So maybe the Oracle does a ton more DD after an initial purchase, just like a lot of people
  3. Same, except I sold half of my SMH (it's had a nice run), and put it all in Nintendo.
  4. Yep, but he's made progress from, "I believe, to my core, that moral truth exists and there are things we "ought" and "ought not" do beyond personal or social opinion. That is impossible with atheism so theism it was for me." to "What morals am I "picking and choose"? Christianity is faith, it is not a "moral system" in and of itself" He's getting closer.
  5. I took Intro to Philosophy a few semesters ago and used this YouTube channel as an adjunct to the course. Most of you do not need to watch these. Incidentally, the Crash Course channel was helpful for a number of courses.

  7. I just learned a little bit more about banking and specifically regarding Data Quality Management audits. This seems like an important aspect to watch in addition to depositor profiles. The best quality deposits won't save you if you can't reliably keep track of it all. Not trying to defend Citi but they're apparently not the only institution with shortcomings and deficiencies in this area. Citi must submit a full resolution plan by July 2023 (after the horse may have bolted from the barn). It's good to know that this is an ongoing and continuous effort with strong finger waving from guys like Chopra. What happens in the event of a deficiency? Fines? https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/bank-regulators-identify-shortcoming-citigroup-resolution-plan-2022-11-23/ https://bankregblog.substack.com/p/citigroups-resolution-planning-shortcomings I have to go to class and haven't read the following yet but will when I get back home. https://bankregblog.substack.com/p/the-aoci-opt-out-revisiting-how-the Speaking in defense of trackers, it's true that most of my DD comes after a purchase.
  8. It hadn't occurred to me that underspending on analytics includes more than just tele-metrics. Maybe the old man should have made Verisk a wholly owned sub rather than selling the position?
  9. The loudest moral religious advocates seem to have the most crowded closets. Love thy neighbor indeed. https://www.christianitytoday.com/news/2019/february/southern-baptist-abuse-investigation-houston-chronicle-sbc.html and then there's the likes of the Swaggart family, Jerry Falwell, Jim Bakker, Paul Shanley (the sheer volume of Catholic priests who've molested children is too long to list here), Mordechai Elon, Baruch Lanner (once again, the volume of Rabbi's who've molested children makes for a tediously long list), and let's not ignore Islamist leaders like Saeed Toosi who was acquitted after being convicted of raping four victims with the court stating “even if it is proved that the defendant has committed the act, it does not mean that he has committed a crime for which the law and the judiciary will be held accountable”. There's not enough ink in the world to outline the stains. Hypocrisy anyone? TBF, the god(s) have told us to be fruitful and multiply but never said anything about whether efforts had to be age appropriate or consensual.
  10. A happily married man is one who understands everything his wife does not say. The same could be said about FRB announcements.

  12. The new OSX Ventura is lame as well. It seems like they're just making UI changes to no good purpose. Best example is the new System Setting screen. It used to be a box with icons for each of the different sections. It was very easy to navigate in addition to being reasonably esthetically pleasing. Now it's a vertically oriented shitbox that extends past the bottom of the screen and makes it more difficult to find what you need. It's like when you come home and your girlfriend has rearranged the furniture but there's nothing new and now you keep stubbing your toe on the sectional. Apparently nobody at Apple has read Steve Krug's "Don't Make Me Think"
  13. So I got in a discussion on Reddit regarding these premium increases and when I laid out my recent experience, I got this response: "Your singular $500 insurance policy isn’t really a fair piece of evidence to make judgements of a company the size of GEICO. Insurance policy premiums are increasing across the board just like all other consumer goods currently are. These increases have nothing to do with the individual policy characteristics, they are driven by changes in macroeconomic forces. You did the right thing by shopping your policy when these changes happened, but GEICO also did the right thing by broadly increasing policy premiums. GEICO knows they will probably lose 15%-20% of their business due to these increases, but as long as they lose more bad accounts than good accounts this is a net positive. You were an unfortunate casualty of the cyclical insurance market, but ultimately your increasing premium is actually an indicator of a good insurance company rather than a bad one. Don’t take it personal." --- I questioned the response and kind of insulted the guy, who is apparently an underwriter, and he/she was kind enough to not take offense and offer further explanation with the following: "I’m literally an underwriter. I am the person who tries to save high quality policies like your own but ends up losing them from my book because my company is taking rate based on factors outside of the characteristics of the individual policies. You missed my point." --- I did indeed miss the point and apologized with a thank you for the lesson. However, I still don't understand the wisdom of cutting off an entire nose to get rid of a few pimples. Why not just reprice the bad risks to a level that compensates for the risk and if they leave, fine. You don't want them on the books anyway. But running off low risk business that will be difficult to get back just seems foolish. Can anyone explain these mysterious "factors outside of the characteristics of the individual policies"? There was a recent similar discussion somewhere here but I can't find it.
  14. I had an iPhone 6 that lasted more than 5 years before upgrading to the 11. I'm waiting to hear from Apple regarding an approval code to get BestBuy to look at it. Until then, I'm fine going phone-less. Went out with friends last night and tonight and managed to find much more productive things to do with my face and hands than just randomly finger banging a phone and staring at nothing.
  15. I missed this earlier. I never would've imagined Jeff Beck doing Puccini.
  16. The nearest Apple store is either in Metairie or Tallahassee (3 1/2 hours either way). Apple pointed me to BestBuy and I went in yesterday after class. BestBuy pointed me back to Apple to get a CS code for them to look at it. I'm actually interested in seeing what happens if I step out of the walled garden with a different mobile device. The major impact that I see would be photo sync. Other than that, I don't see a problem with Pages and Numbers documents since most of my work is done on the Mac or iPad. There might be some changes WRT calendar and reminders which I primarily use on mobile but rarely on the other 2 platforms. I've gotten pretty comfortable with being able to access desktop documents via mobile (this has been a useful but rare occurrence). I know I'm probably just being stubborn but hey, something breaks and you find a new way to work that frequently produces better results. On another note, a friend of mine has a newer Samsung (can't remember which), and he took a photo of the moon which produced absolutely stunning detail. No tripod or other stabilizing hardware. I took a photo of the same moon with my iPhone and it looked like crap. Not knocking iPhone photo and video quality for general purposes and I know you can only take so many photos of the moon but damn.
  17. The chemical you're thinking of here would be rohypnol. In what world is rape not wrong? I can only think of one scenario where you're dating a chick who likes it rough.
  18. Patience has resulted in hitting a stinker bid at $48 for C that's been marinating for a bit. I've got another one in at $46 that would fill a 2% position.
  19. The Wells Fargo stepped in to complete the massacre.
  20. Sweating while having flashbacks from Intro to Philosophy. My big takeaway from that course was learning to adhere to the Intellectual Code of Conduct (linked before). I still succumb to logical fallacies. Watching my Mom (dialysis patient), go into horrible personality swings when her electrolytes got off (potassium is a huge culprit), also helped hammer home the lessons from Intro to Psychology and Biology regarding chemicals and their effects on us. Anyone ever been hangry?
  21. Checked the lightning port and removed a small bit of lint with a toothpick. It didn't help. My preferred solution involves zero cash outlay. I'm a principled idiot and right or wrong, don't believe this is a coincidence. I do enjoy working cross platform(s) and use most of the native iOS/OSX apps (Pages, Numbers, iCal, Notes, etc.) I won't ditch the MacBook mainly because I prefer Logic Pro over all the other digital audio workstations. It's seriously not that much of an inconvenience and there seems to be some legit options. As a Google shareholder I'd be ok with buying a Pixel (if the following link proves to be true). https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/7129740?hl=en
  22. People can also be coerced into doing things they would ordinarily not do as per the Milgram Shock and Stanford Prison experiments.
