+1! If you don't trust your own analysis, buy ETFs not common stocks! Maybe it was Brett Horn! Cheers!

Watched LA Confidential tonight. Still holds up marvelously after over 25 years! Watching a fierce, young Russell Crowe at the beginning of his career battle it out with Guy Pearce was fun! Kevin Spacey and James Cromwell were terrific as well. Cheers! -

Incredible! Was nearly 3 hours long, but went by too fast. Dune 3 will be coming following the arc of Dune Messiah...so enjoy the ride! All the actors were wonderful in Dune 2...Javier Bardem, Austin Butler steal most of their scenes! Cheers! -

I saw Dune 2 today...amazing! Will go down as this generation's Star Wars trilogy or the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy. Superb special effects! Villeneuve should have been given the reins to the last three Star War's movies. Cheers! -
Why did so many smart investors miss making a killing on BRK stock?
Parsad replied to Viking's topic in Berkshire Hathaway
My opinion is never fall in love with a stock...even if it is BRK or FFH. Love your portfolio and how you can compound it while sleeping at night. What you own is less important than making sure you apply Buffett's margin of safety and use intrinsic value for your purposes to compound capital. If I only owned BRK, then I would never have benefited each time from the huge discounts I bought other stocks at...including FFH, OSTK, M, Odyssey Re, META, GE, etc. I did better than BRK and the S&P500 by doing so since I started buying stocks in 1999. Cheers! -

Not sure why you are muting people. Posters make mistakes from time to time. I've been running this thing for 23 years, and I've found that a little humility goes a long ways. Telling people they are clueless or ignoring them, not sure it keeps your mind open to the opinion of others. Believe me, I've had my fair share of confrontations over the years, but I think I was much better off listening and formulating my own opinion, rather than telling others that their thoughts are inane. Unless you're worth well over $100M and did it without any inheritance, I would think about taking my advice. Cheers! -

Hi Luca, There were suspicious posters when the report came out, but you are incorrect about this one. The individual works for a large asset manager and I've seen their public portfolio holdings...and they are very long Fairfax...not short. Cheers!

Also Ambassador Burns seems like a fantastic candidate to run for President for either party...why can't the U.S. get guys like him to run?! Geez! Cheers!

I'm sure there will be many jobs created. Although I think the net jobs created will actually for the first time decrease historically...and that will probably be permanent as AI/robotics becomes more and more efficient over time. Cheers!

Andrew Wilkinson Thirst Post/Book
Parsad replied to TorontoChaosTheatre's topic in General Discussion
I'm not sure Andrew adds any value as an investor. But certainly as someone who understands the tech space and tries to find every advantage that will improve his abilities as an entrepreneur or investor...there may be something there! This is the same with Mohnish. And in fact with most people. They aren't by any means the next Buffett or whoever...but there are certainly bits and pieces of valuable knowledge they do provide...simply from their eager desire to learn more and understand more. It's not always useful information, but often there may be a valuable nugget or two. And the listener or reader has the choice to accept or use what they may find useful. No different than posters on here. Almost everyone at one time or another will make some insightful post. The reader decides if they find that helpful. Cheers!- 15 replies

Andy Barnard took over as head of all of Fairfax's insurance business in April 2011...look at the results the year he took over and then today! His expertise as Odyssey Re's head is what helped change all of Fairfax's insurance business. They went from ho-hum/poor insurers to world class! Cheers!

Float cuts both ways. Catastrophe losses will be magnified within FFH simply because of the asset to equity leverage. So good times...tons of income. Bad times...significant losses. There is no net tangible value of float other than it is a more useful version of debt. Leverage is leverage. In an outlier event, BRK will be the last to fall! Cheers!
-
Yes, you are partially correct. Huge investments like AAPL do have the opposite effect. That being said, a significant amount of BRK's value will never be valued correctly, thus BRK will almost always be valued significantly higher than book value. That may continue to change under Abel, Todd and Ted if they invest more in public securities long-term. Cheers!
-
The leverage of float is already accounted for in the portfolio income. I don't give it any additional weight than that, since float cuts both ways. If you are valuing FFH on earnings, then float is accounted in the income/loss statement. If you are valuing FFH on book value, float is also accounted for since it will have both a positive and negative effect on book value depending on catastrophe losses. Float is just a more useful version of debt. There is no net tangible increase or decrease in value from float. Cheers!

Fairfax is tightly held, not unlike Berkshire...from management, loyal shareholders, employees, long-term hedge funds, etc. They've also done a good job reducing the number of shares in the last 7 years. Lastly, the high stock price also puts off smaller retail clients...whereas Berkshire issued B shares which attracted smaller shareholders. Also being listed primarily on the TSX rather than a large U.S. listing reduces visibility and interest. Although I would imagine many loyal shareholders are ok with that last one! Cheers!
