Lotsofcoke Posted March 21 Posted March 21 Anyone wanna guess what Abel's first big buy is gonna be? I'm betting Energy and will venture a guess: OXY. Let's hear your speculations folks!
Blake Hampton Posted March 21 Posted March 21 This board would have you believe that OXY is among the worst investments Buffett has ever made. I personally think Abel will sink the entire cash pile into Bitcoin futures.
Blake Hampton Posted March 21 Posted March 21 Honestly though, I don't think Abel will be buying much of anything right now. It was a surprise to me that they started buying back stock again, though I think the overall size of that program will remain quite small, at least currently. I also don't think Abel will be buying much more of OXY. One because of the recent run up in oil, and two because I don't think he or Buffett want the risks attached to being the majority owner of an upstream O&G company. They already own quite a large share of it when you include warrants. It's interesting because last quarter their largest purchases were in CVX. I think Abel will sit patiently with the cash until large opportunities appear. Given everything today, I also think it's very possible opportunities could appear quite suddenly.
Malmqky Posted March 21 Posted March 21 Probably more Chubb or CVX. Or are we counting those as Buffett picks still?
KPO Posted March 21 Posted March 21 OxyChem was evidently his first. I could see him participating in an OXY acquisition, but by voting yes when Chevron acquires it one day.

I alway wondered if the Chevron was more for yield....

I should have added that caveat - I suspect it will be base d on. market opportunity as well.

ValueMaven Posted March 21 Posted March 21 Buffett has already said that Berkshire doesnt want to acquire OXY. Why would this change? OxyChem was the perfect acquisition and we still have those sweet 8% preferreds. I could see something like HEICO, or something in the industrial gas complex. IR could be very interesting. Also thought that LNG could be possible - but its moved hard recently. I believe they co-manage some terminals with BHE as well.

While I agree with this, I do think Berkshire has their oil investments at least in part as an inflation hedge on a critical cost inputs for a number of Berkshire’s businesses (think BNSF, Benjamin Moore, the chemical companies, etc.) Most companies hedge with costly options that they constantly have to roll and that generate no income. I’m pretty sure Buffett understands this and has found a better way. While I don’t see them outright acquiring OXY, I suspect they would encourage them as an acquisition target for a high quality company like CVX. At which point Berkshire becomes the largest CVX shareholder and generates income whereas other companies have a rolling expense on their hedges.

Whensthepaintdry? Posted March 23 Posted March 23 I also wondered if they would buy a piece of Hikari Tsushin. It’s pretty small so probably not. They hold almost 1b in brk a. Plus many holdings of other Japanese companies.
