To be fair, you can’t really talk oil and not consider politics because it matters.
 

I think the politics stuff that is ruining threads is politics talk that is unrelated to any company or macro theme.

There were 7-8 posts through three different threads.  The others were flaming each other on a single thread...I had to delete about 25 posts in total, when I finally said, "enough's enough!"

Yep, it should be possible to have polite discussion while having different political views.  It's the rudeness/playground stuff that winds me up.

I can't get rid of the politics stuff...even I get sucked into it over and over.  But let's keep it polite and cordial, rather than antagonistic and rude.

 

I'm going to allow political discussion around the war threads (Ukraine/Russia and Israel/Gaza) and on threads regarding Elon, Doge, etc.  But don't start adding threads...use the ones already there.

 

For anyone going to non-political threads and starting political discussions...automatic 30 day ban.  No politics allowed at all outside of those mentioned threads on the General Discussion area...so not in BRK, FFH, Investment Ideas, or anything else...automatic 30 day bans otherwise.

Consider appending a poop emoji  to the title of threads for which political content is allowed.  This will make them easy to identify.  You could also add the emoji to offending usernames.

I tried this, but you cannot use emoji's in the thread titles. 

 

I've added " - Political" to four threads (Ukraine/Russia; Elon Musk; China; Israel/Gaza).  Please keep anything political isolated to those four threads.

 

If and when other thread subjects arise, where there may a political discussion around it, I will continue to indicate that it is a political thread.  

 

If anyone posts outside of designated "political" threads, it will be an automatic 30-day ban.

Perhaps another useful feature would be to be able to ignore people and not see their posts?

Many of the long off-topic debates or rants are typically baited out by the same people.

On other forums I just add those people to the ignore list but haven't found that option here.

Here's a similar experience with Planet Money with separating politics from economics when they tried to teach economic lessons to 3rd graders:

"There may be some very important economics lessons in The Sneetches [by Dr. Seuss], but I did not feel that those lessons were the themes students were going to grasp at that point in the day or in the book," end quote. So final lesson in our experiment teaching econ to third-graders - keeping politics entirely out of economics - really, really hard."

Unfortunately, ignoring someone works for when they post, but if someone mentions or quotes a post by that individual, it shows in its entirety (even if you tick the "mentions" option on the ignore screen). I'm not sure if there's a plugin that needs to be added to the CMS, or simply enabled, or if some other plugin, com, module, whatever is interfering with this functionality, but it does require that you actively avoid the stuff you don't want to hear. I just stay aware and if certain usernames are mentioned or quoted, I try to just scroll past and/or focus on other actual information (with varying levels of success obviously).

 

Ticking to avoid mentions does not work for my account.

It could be that the ignore only works with future posts after you add someone to the ignore list. So the peeps I added to the ignore list seem to be ignored after I added them. Not sure about this though.
