thowed Posted May 8 Posted May 8 How come you guys are up so early?! (I'm in Europe so morning here).
Parsad Posted May 8 Posted May 8 Greg is 3 hours ahead, so it's like 5:30am where he is. Viking is in Vancouver like me, but he sleeps late if he's working on a long post...which he just posted. So he's probably going to sleep soon. I don't sleep much and often very weird hours when I finally do feel tired for a few hours. Maybe I'll feel tired in another half hour or hour. Then I'll be up at 6:30am again. Where are you in Europe? Cheers!
Gregmal Posted May 8 Posted May 8 Look at the NHL for instance. The majority of players are proudly Canadian. Yet despite this, Canadian teams routinely have trouble signing talent because of….taxes. People with the ability to choose realize that as great as something may be, there’s only so much government nonsense they’ll put up with. Plus, you can always visit.

People with the ability to choose realize that as great as something may be, there’s only so much government nonsense they’ll put up with. Plus, you can always visit. That's true for most people...although I would say people like Buffett and Prem are the outliers. You run a company based on their model or where you aren't selling your shares every year, and it doesn't really matter where you live because you pay so little in capital gains tax. Thus your decision is based on happiness, community, paying your fair share, and still living a fulfilling life. I'm not as rich as them, but I have the same view. I'm not going to leave Vancouver to save 5% more on my taxes or for estate planning! My life is perfectly fine here...regardless of tax rates, economics, tariffs, weather, etc. The only thing that could change it is if politics has some effect on my rights, my family, or my communities rights...then it becomes an issue. And maybe that's the driving force for many moving from blue states to red states, rather than solely a monetary/tax issue. Cheers!
thowed Posted May 8 Posted May 8 In London (I know, technically we're not 'Europe' any more, but I'm not going there...!). Summer is threatening to start and I get to walk through one of our best parks to work in the morning. Elon's Twitter tries to portray the City as a warzone, and while it's not perfect (what big city is...?) when it's good, it's still one of the great cities of the world (just added Tokyo to that list after an Easter holiday there). However, resorting to cliches, maybe this is why NA is so much more dynamic than us - no way I can be up that late or early any more (now that kids are older...). Cheers!

Elon can be an idiot! I was in London last October and two years before. I plan on making another trip this year or next. I absolutely love it there...consider it a second home now if I ever wanted to move to Europe...yes, it is still all Europe to me! Fell in love with Ireland and Scotland as well...just wonderful, beautiful countries and people. The first time I went to London, I took my whole family and got this amazing suite at The Shangri-La at The Shard...not only did I not sleep for nearly two days, I spent most nights from 2am to 7am doing exactly this, sitting on my laptop and posting/surfing and ordering late-night room service, while enjoying the 180 degree view of the city! It was just so beautiful! From my hotel room and hotel bedroom...just a stunning shot of the Tower Bridge and River Thames...and that's not the whole view, only a third! Cheers!
thowed Posted May 8 Posted May 8 Glad you enjoyed it! That's quite the view! I've still never been up the Shard - you know how it is - you never see the sights of your own city... I did a night time viewing platform in Tokyo, which was also glorious. I have still never made it to Canada, though have two very good Canadian friends. However one's in London and one in NYC. Would be honoured to buy you a drink if you're back - I have learned so much from this extraordinary forum you have created and moderated! Cheers!
73 Reds Posted May 8 Posted May 8 10 hours ago, Parsad said: That's because you have no interest in seeing things from any other human being's perspective. You think Ourkid8 is nothing but an antisemite. You have no interest whatsoever to try and understand his experience or why he thinks the way he does...surprise, half the world thinks the way he does! It's not different than the MAGA faithful deluding themselves that Trump is the answer to everything, and the left thinking Trump is the problem to everything. But you, you're not like Greg who is a pragmatist, or Cubs who thinks Trump is the solution to a lot of problems and admits he believes it. You are different...you will not bend no matter what the facts are, because the only facts that matter are the ones floating around in our head. Anyone else is ignorant, blind to what is happening, uneducated or delusional. I'm not talking out of both sides of my mouth...I'm just trying to find ground that the majority can plant their flag on and say ok, let's try to move forward! At the same time respecting due process, the rights of the individual, and why governments are created and formed the way they are, so the people aren't held hostage or compromised by any single leader. But you do you! Whatever the hell that is! Cheers! Look who's talking! You constantly try to take the middle on issues where there is no middle. Putting your head in the sand solves nothing. If you give any credence whatsoever to the garbage spewed by Ourkid8, it is impossible to take you seriously. Sorry to say. Everything you accuse me and others of, you are doing in spades on this thread. Take a stand for a change. If you don't like something or someone politically related, suggest a viable alternative or solution rather than just sounding off. That defines the problem with the left, all gripes and nothing constructive.

Cheers! https://www.macrotrends.net/2482/sp500-performance-by-president Once again, Trump renting space in your brain. Sad, really.

Anglela and I will do our 21st trip to the UK in September. We'll hang out in London a few days then spend a few more in Bath. Then it is Wales; we'll go to Conwy for a while. Lastly we'll spend time in Betws-y-Coed doing some more primitive trail hikes. Going to England is easier than going to the beach or mountains for us. And then the transportation! We have gotten to to the place where we navigate without renting a car just fine.
dealraker Posted May 8 Posted May 8 Sanjeev, I watch as others...particularly one dude...routinely assault you LOL. I'd participate but you'd have to kick me permanently off the site for my wording "intervention." I know you handle all the bombs easily and with grace so I'll just watch from a distance. Your brain? I think 39% annual pretty much sums how "owned" you are!

Bath is fab - I'm going for a weekend at the Royal Crescent soon. If you haven't been, I recommend eating at Upstairs at Landrace (book in advance). Casual, but very charming, and delicious food. Good bakery downstairs too!

Canada could have be the home for Elon Musk too. But he preferred to move to the US because he viewed it as vastly more supportive of ambitious business creation. Instead of learning from that, Canada's politicians vilify him for his support of Trump - Ontario cancelled all their Starlink contracts and various provinces removed Tesla products from their EV rebates.

Its not only Canadian politicians. Got two waterfront condominiums here on the FL Gulf coast this winter from Canadian snowbirds who swore they weren't coming back due to Trump. Imagine boycotting a country and a nice winter lifestyle for yourself over a politician.

There are lots of other places with great weather to spend the winter. Why would Canadians want to spend time and money in a country where the government has gone out of their way to constantly insult and threaten Canadians? Unfortunately the US has become the world's biggest bully. Seems some of your states are starting to feel the financial loss of Canadian tourists. But what may have more effect is the loss of Canadian winter residents who have been paying property taxes south of the border. We will see.

It's appreciated,,, I need the Florida market to cool off so I can find a place there run by anyone other than Socialists or Commies - like Illinois or Canada.

Don't count on it, Cubs. Most Canadians are smart enough to see past politics. But those who aren't are welcome to do us RE buyers in Florida more favors.

Canada is seeing more and more Americans heading north to spend their summers in Canada to escape the southern heat (and certain American politicians). And unlike the United States, Canada is much more welcoming to it's visitors and makes it much easier to enter the country than it is for Canadians heading to the US. Can you imagine Canadian Customs and Immigration searching American's cell phones and laptops to see if they were critical of Prime Minister Carney? But we also very much appreciate the hundreds of medical professionals moving here.

Hard to find anywhere more beautiful than Victoria on the Pacific Coast or the Canadian Rockies. But your experience with US customs must be different than most. For me, the worst experiences have been in Europe.

Life is too short to waste it on this stuff. At this point in my life, I'd rather spend my time sitting in a nice cafe or pub in London, strolling some beautiful park in the Cotswolds, watching my nephew play hockey, or my niece play soccer! Cheers!
