  1. HomeServices ends 2021 with five simultaneous acquisitions - https://finance.yahoo.com/news/homeservices-america-closes-2021-five-170500077.html
  2. This one is so annoying at IB. It is totally inconsistent - for the same client they will let you trade in one account and not in another. Same SSN and account owner. They want you to prove you are unaffiliated like every two weeks or some nonsense like that.
  3. R.I.P. Lou Simpson https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/obituaries/ct-louis-simpson-obituary-20220110-uc3znwwnznabnjc6ujfu534sty-story.html
  4. NICO partnership / investment / quota share with Ariel Re - https://www.reinsurancene.ws/berkshire-hathaways-nico-invests-in-ariel-re/
  5. The CEO of Catholic Syrian Bank - CSB - has decided to retire early due to health problems. https://www.business-standard.com/article/finance/csb-bank-md-ceo-takes-early-retirement-lender-to-set-up-panel-to-find-successor-122010800539_1.html Bloomberg has an article on it but there is probably a paywall: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-01-08/billionaire-watsa-backed-indian-lender-says-ceo-to-retire-early
  6. Thanks for replying. I was like, "I know I'm a stud but some of these account NAVs are looking a little too good to be true."
  7. I have a question about FRFHF shares held through Interactive Brokers in some accounts. I see the FRFHF.DIV corporate action and I get that the 252.77 / share is the portion to be treated as a dividend. But does it seem to anyone else that this looks to be double counted, inflating the account balance? In at least one account it seems like the cash from the tender came in and hit the account, plus this additional pending corporate action of 252.77/share also being counted towards account balance. Hope that makes sense... Anybody else see this in an IB account that tendered shares of FRFHF? I don't have anything like that in the accounts holding the Canadian shares. By the way, for taxable US accounts tendering FRFHF shares, Interactive Brokers did appear to withhold 15% tax on the portion of the proceeds deemed a dividend (15% of 252.77/share).
  8. We don't know for sure but I would bet that there is no book value write-up.
  9. Thanks for posting the originals. Pretty hilarious to hear Bernie point out to Warren that high inflation is what makes the wage increases inadequate. I'm sure Warren got a chuckle out of that line of argument considering the source.
  10. https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/northwest/buffett-rejects-bernie-sanders-call-to-intervene-in-strike/ Bernie tried to get Warren (Buffett) involved in a PCP subsidiary with striking workers. Warren declined. The CEO of PCP is responsible for his business.
  11. I still don't think any of this has anything to do with batteries for electric vehicles. As far as disposable alkaline batteries, Duracell makes the Kirkland batteries that are sold right alongside the Duracell batteries at Costco. I don't know what the differences are, but they are not 100% identical. Probably very similar and much better value for the money.
  12. Yeah - looks right on your link they had a clip from the treasury's announcement where they say explicitly that the November reset uses the CPI-U prints from March -> September.
  13. BLS website -> Data Tools -> Popular series -> price indexes -> CPI-U https://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/surveymost?bls As for why I used September's figure, I was just following your lead (like I said I don't follow this stuff closely and am not investing in these bonds) " For example, The Sept numbers for 2021 were posted on Oct 13, 2021 for use on the "first business day in November" "
  14. I'm not following this super closely, but I think you derive the 7.12% by taking the 6 month change from the data dates you state above and double it to annualize it - 274.31 minus 264.877 is 9.433, which is a 3.56127561% increase over 6 months. Double that and it is 7.12255%
  15. Doesn't seem like we always had a "Sustainability" tab as well. Powerpoints and sustainability leadership councils! What is going on at HQ! https://www.berkshirehathaway.com/sustainability/sustainability.html
  16. I wouldn't expect Duracell to become a player in electric vehicles. Obviously BYD will be a big player in batteries and vehicles. Berkshire will sell a lot of juice into EV charging and some day Pilot Flying J will probably use their well located footprint with restaurants, convenience stores and large bathrooms to cater to folks charging in their parking lots. BNSF will likely electrify in some way as well eventually. It is also possible that Berkshire Hathaway Energy's lithium extraction project from the geothermal brine will eventually prove commercially viable.
  17. May be time to ask for a refund soon - https://www.wsj.com/articles/keurig-for-cocktails-maker-to-shut-down-and-refund-customers-11639787995?mod=hp_lista_pos4
  18. Except for the enormous section of Berkshire's insurance business where they have taken on long-tail liabilities for fixed up-front premiums.
  19. This isn't news - Berkshire hasn't been rated a triple A credit since 2011, when the United States of America was downgraded - but it still blows my mind that Johnson and Johnson has a higher (AAA) credit rating than Berkshire does. They literally put a subsidiary through bankruptcy this year to manage potential liabilities and are planning to spin the company into two parts... Bonkers https://finance.yahoo.com/news/berkshire-hathaway-finance-corporation-moody-215507873.html
  20. Sounds like they are talking about fat-finger type trading execution mistakes rather than Sanjeev's type of mistake. We all have plenty of stories like Sanjeev with the benefit of hindsight. Value investors rarely sell near the top tick. As far as the OP's question, the gist is this quote: "I submit and it fills immediately." Almost any time an order fills immediately that you were not expecting to, it's been some kind of mistake. For me, it has usually happened when I inadvertently entered a buy order when I was intending to sell or vice versa. Usually I break orders up into much smaller lots so it isn't the end of the world - but it costs real money and you feel sloppy. Depending on how the trade went it can also mess you up with a wash sale.
  21. Yes, I believe even FRFHF shareholders were notified. Not every broker handles corporate actions the same way, and some people have notification preferences set to postal mail, electronic only, or both.
  22. Wow I haven't followed this one since selling out. Was once a big position for me. Is today's move because of a seeking alpha article? https://seekingalpha.com/article/4472692-knot-offshore-partners-stock-distribution-cut-might-happen
  23. Berkshire Hathaway today edit, in the end it was Berkshire Hathaway, Atlas Corp, Cliffs, and Marketwise. Sold some Progressive to fund some of it.
  24. great interview - thanks for posting it. Hadn't seen that one in a long time
  25. Don't want to jinx it but it seems fast again this evening. Was pretty unusable most of the day. Thanks Sanjeev
