I thought it might be fun to have a general thread devoted to what we're currently reading, to serve as a complement to the one-off book review threads that we have. This doesn't have to be investing focused.

Unexpected Returns was a very illuminating book about market cycles. Recommended.

I never really could read more than one book at once, so here are the books I read recently (most from March to now)

A Farewell to Arms

For whom the bell tolls

Snowball

Maltese Falcon

The Little Book of Talent

Titan (Rockefeller)

Devil in the White City

Lolita

Moonwalking with Einstein

Talent is Overrated

The Postman Always Rings Twice

House of Morgan

I am in the middle of Predictably Irrational (good so far) and expect to be done with it fairly shortly.  Also, I am trying to read about Fiat a lot.

liberty, i just finish it last few days, it was very eye opening, never thought duty free was so profitable, the amount of cash dividend they were getting was insane.

Twice he won the Badwater Ultramarathon, a 135-mile "jaunt" from the bottom of Death Valley to the shoulders of Mount Whitney. He triumphed in the 153-mile Spartathlon in Greece three times. Recently, he set a new American record by running 165.7 miles in 24 hours—6.5 marathons in one day.

I guess reading 500 pages per day is the value investor's ultramarathon. Note that Scott is sponsored by Brooks…

Einstein of Money: The Life and Timeless Financial Wisdom of Benjamin Graham.  I am only a couple of chapters in and like it.  I thought I remember it not getting great reviews when it first came out, but I am enjoying it thus far.

This one is sort of hilarious.  Good fun, but it's basically about how to get almost-insider info without breaking the law.  Call it SAC lite.

Just finished The Value Investors by Ronald Chan which was worth it for the Schloss interview.  Mind you I'm a fan.

I liked Tobi's Quantitative Value which I read earlier in the year.

I'm slowing getting through Howard Mark's book but it's been slow going.

I have What's Behind the Numbers? and The Art of Value Investing on order.

Just finished Straight Flush by Ben Mezrich - good book, very similar to his others, which I also liked.  Pretty sure the movie won't be far behind.

Read Ben Mezrich's Ugly Americans before. It was Meh! Seemed like a thriller  and felt there was more fiction than fact and couldn't trust the story. Moreover did not learn much from that book. Decided to skip other books by him.

How was this book ?

Started Creative cash flow reporting and I am into 1st few chapters. Very interested in the subject and felt this book needed actual note-taking, researching, highlighting and serious effort. Not a book I will be finishing soon. I am still into the 1st few chapters, but some of the stuff looks a little repetitive. What was your impression of the book?

Dies the Fire, S.M Stirling

That was very good. I enjoyed it very much. I like post apocalyptic novels. Stirling is prolific to say the least. The Dies the Fire trilogy then had another trilogy tacked on to it. I think I read 4 of them. They get progressively worse and Die the Fire is by far the best.

You pretty much nailed it. Very, very, repetitive. Coming from a finance/accounting background, it teaches as if you have never seen a statement of cash flow. So I basically was only able to take bits and pieces overall.
