@rkbabang nice looking turntable.  we have a receiver too so it's nice to be able to not have to purchase the preamp.  acrylic vs mdf?

The platter that the record sits on is made out of mdf (medium density fiberboard), which seems like a pretty cheap way to build it so I went for acrylic upgrade.  It is a nice heavy solid platter.

Explains why I've never seen one.  It's funny the things we made do with back in the days...you have no other choice, so it looks very simple for back then, but seems ridiculously unnecessary today!

I see my little niece and nephew talking to Siri to get information or look up a program, and I'm like flabbergasted with how easily they can do it.  I think my nephew at 11 now already has surpassed me in most technology, setup, use, etc.

And I'm only 56!!!

That being said, I don't think they've ever heard the word "flabbergasted!"  🤣

Cheers!

This topic is killing me! 😅

 - Years ago, we were baby sitting the biologic grand daugther of The Lady of the House for a weekend. Suddenly she asked : 'John, can I lend your iPad Mini? -I have forgotten to get my own iPad with me from home ...'. Me : 'Sure, Celina - Here you go!' -All about being about a nice 'uncle', you know! 😅

Monday arrived, and she had been picked up by her Mom again as agreed, and I needed to fire up the iPad Mini again for something, and I simply got a shock, almost hit by PTSD, by the experience, thinking: 'wtf has happened here!?'😅

- Basically iPad Mini setup changed, to me, beyond recognition! 😅 Tons of her usual favorite apps installed, some of my own apps dumped! It took me more than a week to get back to 'my set up' - Tiny terminator creating chaos!' 😅

At least markets were closed, so she wasen't able to trade anyting! 😅

If the markets were open she'd give it back and say "I was playing that stock trading game you have all day, I'm not very good at it, but it was fun."

The only problem is that this is automatic now.  If I take my brother and his family for lunch or dinner, at some point the kids are automatically on the iPhone or iPad at the restaurant (casual restaurants).  They come and stay for the weekend...they bring their iPads with them.  So I really have to watch them and control their time on there.

But I never give my iPhone!  They know the rule with me...you talk to me and don't get to use my iPhone, unless we are looking for a little present for them (Birthday/Christmas).  Otherwise, you can ask for your Mom, Dad and Grandma's iPhone, but you never get to use Uncle's!

And the great part...they are good kids and know the rule!  On top of that, they actually get to really know their Uncle as well by talking to me and joking with me!

Cheers!

Taking kids out to do things in nature is really great. If you can get them interested in fishing, hiking, biking, canoeing, etc. Hard to do with really young kids but 7-8 is a great time to start. Never hear them say they are bored or wanting to go on a device.

@rkbabang thanks for rec

Whenever they say they are bored, I tell them let's go outside and wash my car or sweep the driveway.  They suddenly aren't bored!

The other problem is that kids are so busy these days, that using electronics is their reward or way to wind down.

Besides school, my nephew is working on his black belt in Tae Kwon Do, plays hockey 3 days a week and has a hockey tournament every other month that takes up the entire weekend.  He's 11!

My niece is only 8, plays four days a week on a rep soccer team...already!  They have full gear, jackets, backpacks, water bottles, etc.

Then their parents have very active lives...season tickets to Canucks games, busy work and social lives, my brother is a bank manager and plays hockey 3 days a week, my sister-in-law is a notary and has tons of client/prospect meetings, etc.

So Uncle and Grandma end up helping out quite a bit as well!  Once we are run down, the iPad option comes out!  🙂  Cheers!
