That's complete nonsense.  Nothing further warranted.  Cheers!

Ignorance in action: truly a work of MAGArt!

Protected from what?

From being harmed or killed?  And that's the point:  People who use guns to protect themselves are acting rationally.  People who use guns to commit crimes and kill are anything but rational.  But some folks like to blame the guns and not the people using them for illicit purposes.  And then there are those who live in an imaginary world and believe that if we outlaw guns they will simply go away and criminals and crazy people will no longer be able to obtain them.  Thanks, but I prefer to live in reality.

From being killed by what?  Other guns.

Maybe.  Again, what world do you envision where guns will disappear?

Lifting the collective MAGA gaze from the bottom of Trump's boots and peering North:

In 2023, there were 17,927 firearm homicides in the United States

In 2023, there were 289 homicides by shooting in Canada

US population: 334.9 million (2023)

Canada population: 40.08 million (2023)

Oh wise one, what do you propose?  Or do you just like to recite statistics?

Simple: Mimic Canadian gun laws and re-assess

The US is not Canada and our cultures are very different.  Bad people will get guns regardless of any gun laws.  That is the problem and the issue.

Every 18 year old in Israel carries around an automatic rifle.  Now look at homicide rates in Israel vs US or Canada.  In Switzerland, until recently, every male I believe had an automatic rifle at home.  Look at homicide rate there vs France.   What matters are people and not weapons.

Of course.  Restricting guns will work about as well as prohibition but with much more dire consequences.

US and Canada have very different cultures? I don't even know what to say.

The US won't even attempt alternatives.

OK fine, we'll get what we deserve.

Well, the flip side is that at least it creates demand! Capitalism in action, baby:

I don't think Israel is the country the US wants to be emulating right now!

What alternatives?  No one is against reasonable gun control and background checks to keep guns out of the wrong hands.  How we accomplish that is the $64k question.  And Israel is a fine example if you care to look beyond the rhetoric of the United Nations.

I just posted the alternative: mimic Canadian gun laws.

Give it five years. See what happens. No good? Try something else. Revert back to today's legal framework.

At least make an effort!

Honestly, Canada has way higher quality “average” citizen than the US, and it’s not even close. That explains the difference

That suggests that Americans are murderous goons and the rest of the world is more civilized.

If no one was against that we would have it.  But we dont.

But my point was never to rehash the gun debate here for the 50th time. The point was always that  most issues and laws reflect the tradeoff of the rights of individuals vs the good of society.  And nobody will ever agree on where that line should be drawn.

@LC  Canadian Firearm Homicides rate:

2023= .73 per 100k

Even with Bill C-17 in the early 90s can you attribute it all to that? Certainly played a role…but cultures, economics, healthcare etc. all play a role.

This is pretty much what 30 years of FBI data suggests…there is something culturally that has changed which makes the US exceptionally “good” at spawning individuals with a desire to do unthinkable things. It’s sad and should be a focal point alongside some legislation considerations.

But I’ve said my peace on this topic so…exiting stage left…

We have tried that in NYC for decades, and where is the result?  Murder rate orders of magnitude higher than in Canada.

Well, try it in the rest of the country. It's like saying Toronto has strict gun laws but the rest of Canada doesn't.

Or let's (as a country) brainstorm some other solution. But gun laws haven't changed significantly in my lifetime, and the problem just grows.

Maybe you're right and gun control doesn't address the root cause - fine, but then let's go address that. Is it better k-12 education? I'd gladly pay for that - even not having any children myself. Is education driven by things like household financial stability? Well let's direct more funds towards the middle classes rather than more tax breaks for the Waltons.

Tell me the cause of the problem and let's try out some potential solutions, rather than more T's & P's.
