I somewhat disagree, but not entirely. I believe it is his attempt to liven up the meeting without all the "yes" people. -

We lost a son some 30+ years ago, and it doesn't better with time. You just learn to cope. Sometimes you can help by just sitting there and not saying a thing. The comment about being around in six months is right on as well as currently. I have 2 friends who also lost their sons and it helps that we can get together and let off steam periodically.

Baupost Makes A Ton Of Money From Madoff!
bookie71 replied to indythinker85's topic in General Discussion
A few folks made some money from the claims on the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Is it right or wrong? Folks needed money to keep their boats, houses, cars etc. People were willing to pay. simply a future value, present value calculation. Actually it took much longer for the claims to get paid than most anticipated. -

I know just enough about estate and trusts to be very, very dangerous, so see an estate lawyer to check this out. The yearly gift exemption is 13,000 per person. If you are married your spouse can elect to give another 13,000. If the value is greater then you go against your lifetime exemption which is 5,000,000 BUT goes to 1 or 2,000,000 in 2013. If more then you pay tax at a very high rate (35 or 45%). This lifetime exemption is for both your estate and gifts.

Since it is an estate, taxes would have nothing to do with purchase. Taxes are based on the value of the estate at time of death or at an alternative date a few months later (it used to be nine months, but I believe it has changed). It might have been a liquidity problem and the estate needed cash to pay taxes.

Quote from: fareastwarriors on Today at 04:09:17 PM This is kinda crazy... For the average mom/pop investor/saver, the tax rates on dividend is not going to make much of a difference since their investments are inside their 401ks/ IRAs... On the other hand, the executives and board of directors (you know the people deciding to do these special dividends), should notice a difference. . .You would be surprised, A married couple with taxable income over 70,700 or a single person with taxable income over 35,350 is saving 40% (15%nstead of 25%). As someone who has prepared taxes for over 50 years, it makes a difference for a lot more folks than you might think.

Well, I suck at hockey and I can barely score a goal every 5 games...it does not mean that I think Scott Gomez is a great player because he's would kick my ass. BeerBaron But he would make you feel good about it, he is still down to earth and currently playing for the Anchorage Aces, the local semi pro hockey team, when he could have gone to Russia and made bu co bucks. He did this last time there was a strike. he has a foundation for the local kids who need help in affording hockey and puts on camps for them. He is one of the genuine nice guys.
