https://training.fema.gov/emiweb/downloads/is208sdmunit3.pdf Details local and State governments job in a crisis. Communication was poor all around (fed, state, local). Edit: It was only 5 days ago 48 states declared an emergency.

This is utter bullshit. This situation is why you have federal/national governments. In order to have a large coordinated response to large scale problems that don't care about borders or your political views. It doesn't get more textbook than a pandemic. I agree with rb. Cuomo just said today NYS is paying 7$/mask because they are competing with other states. This is where federal government is supposed to step in. And I don’t disagree with that....but states were slow to communicate to federal government what was needed. Who has better visibility into local hospitals and what supplies they do and don’t have? States do. That is all I’m saying.

Did I say all responsibility? No....the states should have acted quickly to lockdown their own communities. Also is it the federal govts job to stockpile goods for local hospitals across the country or should that be up the the state? It’s not bullshit at all. The federal level is for directing at a high level. Federal is there to backup what States need assistance with. The State is responsible for localities and their response. They have much better visibility into supplies and needs than the federal government.

That could also be true and we could avoid blaming him for any delays prior to that. Pretty unrealistic to assume Trump's only info on COVID-19 prior to 1/14 was directly from China but it doesn't actual affect my argument so I'll concede the point. 10 days later the Senate was briefed by Fauci and others. By the end of January there was more than sufficient public information to begin preparing the US. During February, the standard line was that this was a Democratic hoax. I'm mostly referring to late-January to the end of February period. Senators accused of insider information said public information by January 24th convinced them that it was worth selling stocks (including CNBC's coverage of China). There must have been more than sufficient info for Trump, who has more non-public information than any human on the planet. I don't disagree, there probably could have and should have been action sooner. But to go along with this, there has to be some weight given to the discretion taken to shut down the US economy. When the US shuts down the whole world will feel it much more than if Italy shuts down. I'm just saying it's not an easy decision to make and it's certainly not a binary as some on here would like to proclaim. Don't disagree but so far it's been a location-based decision to shut down in the US. I'm sure those are simultaneous because of pressure from the federal government. Further, that all of Europe was simultaneously shutdown made it prudent for the US to act now if it was ever going to do it. It would be most effective in concert. Europe was likely waiting for US until Italy became overwhelmed and could no longer delay. Maybe US was waiting on Europe though? If we had all addressed this early, it would've been a short 2 weeks with a lot of optimism on the other side. To clarify: In 1918-1919, many large cities in the US had similar shutdowns to right now for weeks at a time. Many nations had shutdowns as the virus arrived. I don't think it's shocking that a shutdown was coming or necessary. For that reason, I don't blame Trump for pushing for a shutdown at all. I criticize the delay and the additional costs and time associated with that delay. That we still don't have a plan 7 weeks later is why I feel comfortable suggesting Trump will ultimately face much of the blame (no idea about politics, this is purely a history guess). I think some (not all) but some of the slow response and lack of leadership in the US is a result of the degradation of the state’s responsibilities. When all is said and done, I hope state examine themselves and how they responded.

Is this not also a disservice? Trump isn’t wrong that China was not very cooperative in the beginning. Not saying he isn’t guilty of any “coverup” himself. Simply saying misinformation and lack of accurate information was rampant from the start.

That's known facts but US is/was a manufacturing powerhouse - it won't take long to catchup. It's about people's will. Rollup the sleeves and get to work! i think big companies will rethink supply chain moving forward - China is holding too many cards - the manufacturing, and the intellectual properties! Good luck with the mobster unions around

A good read about charity and governments role as we enter this time of lockdown and economic stagnation. https://fee.org/resources/not-your-to-give/

Never let a good crisis go to waste right? This type of request has never been granted. Absolutely insane. The closes thing was the despicable handling of the Japanese during wwii. Katrina also had some similar stuff happen. Hundreds of law abiding citizens had their guns confiscated leaving their homes, businesses, vulnerable to looting. What exactly is the text of the request that you're saying has never been granted before? Many district courts, on their own authority, have already suspended all civil and criminal trials and have excluded that time from counting toward the requirements of the Speedy Trial Act, with specific exceptions to be granted on a case-by-case basis. To my knowledge, however, no district court has suspended proceedings entirely, which would effectively suspend the writ of habeas corpus in that district (but query whether, in the event a federal district court was closed and thus there were no federal habeas venue, a state court could assume jurisdiction to grant a writ even to a federal prisoner, assuming Congress had not suspending the writ). The primary qualm is the request to detain individuals without due process indefinitely without trial.

Let’s not forget all the stuff behind the scenes being passed. Patriot Act signed again DOJ just asked congress if it could suspend due process.

I don't see Spirit on there. Interesting. They have been excluded from pretty much all coverage. It is kind of strange.

Our governor said he was going to fine any surgeon who chooses to perform an elective surgery...Even though we are nowhere near over capacity yet.

Never say never but it would be tough. 300k guard members and 900k law enforcement officers gives you what 25kish per state? Road blocks are about as effective as you can be (see 9/11 response). Just remember folks, when seconds count, the police are only minutes dozens of minutes away!

It's worth noting that Japan has one of if not the oldest population yet have seen pretty good numbers without extreme measures. I'd say the odds are high it's somewhat correlated to smoking. Doesn't the Middle East have really high smoking rates as well? Smoking rate is high in Japan, especially men, between 25% and 30% of the male population. Weird...the more you know, the less you know.

Exited RTN at 130. Have been buying pretty sizable positions the past few days from 117-108. Wasn't expecting this bounce back so quickly.

I think the coronavirus is giving everyone a glimpse into central planning. I'm not saying this is the end or anything. We will probably see massive bailouts, printing of money, and stimulus after stimulus to kick the credit/debt can down the road further. At the end of this I think we will see massive permanent government intervention as the Constitution gets tossed to the side. I'm buying though, I mean what else can you do? Companies and services will still exist after all of this. Cash cows are imo the safest place to put money. This is not the end. But I wonder if this is the end of the beginning. In English: There's a possibility of a long transition with a lot of movements up and down and that scenario can be challenging, in terms of defining entry and exit points. I'm trying to balance the "what else can you do?" with "there may be little place to hide". Time narrative is something that most underappreciated on the macro level. Historically speaking, it takes a long time for effect of first second and third order to play out.

China is defiantly restarting their economic engine, but who going to buy there stuff when the rest of the world is in lockdown. It would be kind of ironic if this calamity starting out in China and hitting it hard would actually show their resiliency while the rest of the world (ex Japan, Korea, Singapore) tumbled into lockdown that it can’t get out of. may not exactly play out like this, but who knows? Most of the off patent medication consumed in the US is made China and India nowadays. This situation is proving fruitful for the simple fact it’s bringing to light to the average Joe, just how cucked the US is by China. When the average Joe hears 90+ percent of our pharmaceuticals are manufactured in China, what do you think that’s going to produce? Nothing but animosity and more hatred for the government. Perhaps Paul is right, maybe we should forgo the bailouts to anyone and everyone and “burn the thickets” so you speak. A guy near me who runs a pretty successful Brew Pub wrote this. So the bail outs for big business will start already. Total bullshit. How about we help all the PEOPLE first? If a casino needs a bailout maybe we have too many of them? Maybe they are not spending the income properly? Maybe they are paying the board and execs too much. So in reality, they are not running the business correctly. They are overspending, not budgeting and not in tune with their own business model. Years ago after a few years in business they redid the intersection of wertzville and valley roads. Huge project, something like 6million with grants mixed in. It went way over schedule, the intersection was a mess and i was completely BANKRUPT. People stopped coming to the shop because they couldnt navigate through the construction. People stopped ordering delivery because they thought we were closed. Sales dropped 40% i had to run credit with every vendor. In the midst of it all i needed help, i had 2 little kids, mortgage payments equipment payments etc. I called the Apropriate authorities and companies that pay businesses stipends for situations like this while they are effecting their businesses. This is what the woman on the phone told me "Oh you are that little PIZZA SHOP in the plaza? no we have no programs that fit your needs." I was devastated, i needed help for something completely out of my control and NOONE was there for me. Long story short is that we adapted, closed our retirement accounts and went ALL IN with a new business model (right after the intersection was finished) and we came back and grew the business by about about 800% , paid back the debt and ran the business differently knowing that NOONE is ever going to be there to help. NOONE. I guarantee if these big businesses are not given the bail out they will magically find the means to survive. But why spend their own money if they can get it printed for them for free. ALOT OF SMALL BUSINEESES ARE GOING TO CLOSE BECAUSE OF THIS. ALOT OF SMALL BUSINESSES WILL CLOSE IN THE TOUGH YEAR TO COME AFTER THIS IS ALL OVER. OUR GREAT NATION WAS BUILT FROM THE GROUND UP STARTING WITH THESE SMALL BUSINESSES THAT ARE FAILING FOR REASONS OUT OF THEIR CONTROL. The answer prob is NOT sending people $1000.00 and giving a trillion to people who already have proven they cant run a business. But what do i know? I just have to make sure i put the cheese on top of the sauce, you know? Thanks for your time, AL Edit: Not saying I agree with it completely, just pointing out sentiment
