On the TRS...could counterparty say "no mas!"

Prem:  We have terms with counterparty...can extend the terms.  They have a hedging mechanism.  We like our company and believe it is extremely inexpensive

Is this in terms of current price of FFH or the mechanics of the TRS?  Thanks for the running commentary

It really is just preferred equity pawn-shop behavior with a friendly partner

This is correct and funny.  Gfp thanks for the posts and not just this one.

And as is the norm Greg simplifies it correctly.  I know people like me being sort of the right-brained summary type, the long holding older people that often get ignored (getting older is accepting that you are invisible...count on it coming to you if you live long)... but given I've been here a while...

But this isn't Fairfax's first challenge, it isn't the last, and the very idea that this business can be investigaged and obsessed about such that all of it is understood by outsiders is illogical.  But from my place what is logical is believing that management is far better than average and that you as an investor will do well with Fairfax.   The road is bumpy and not linear.

Ain't it awful?   At some point recently I think Viking wrote about position sizing and that's important with all things.  It is you looking at yourself in the mirror asking, "Can I handle this?"

@dealraker - you are not invisible to some of us.  Your long term perspective is well needed and also appreciated.  Completely agree it is about looking in the mirror and answering the question for oneself.  Doesn't matter what others will state.  There are too many calories being burned on this short report.  The motivations for MW are different than for long term business owners.  Wish the stock had gone lower frankly but oh well.

I think it's worth hanging a line in medical devices / services.   A lot of stuff is blowing up.  Admittedly a lot of stuff was over priced but still I think there are some deals to be had.

Just bought some $MLAB, a medical diagnostic company.  It screens horrid, with like a 100-300 PE but that is nonsense.  They are a serial acquirer so there are numerous accounting charges.  In their annual report they break out their adjusted earnings and they are going for 10-12x that number.  This for a company that has grown EPS 15-20% per year over the past couple decades.   I think they have hit some recent challenges but yet they are still very profitable and historically that has been part of the business, it is a lumpy 15-20% growth rate.   I don't know how much of a moat they have, I suspect there might be a small one based on the high margins and due and due to small size of these businesses discouraging competitors but I won't pretend to be an expert.

Anyone else got any idea in this area?

Danaher and TMO.  I believe @Spekulatius has posted on or tracks DHR.

  5. A friend of mine tried CoCounsel (https://casetext.com/cocounsel/) and was impressed with it.  @Saluki - I believe it integrates some aspect of case law research.  I am in private practice as well and having tried Bard and ChatGPT for certain templates, I do believe low level tasks can be replaced today.  There may be a market to have a better query editor so that the result (in the first try) is better.  Not sure where the opportunities will be for new lawyers but perhaps document review is replaced with managing queries and cross checking AI results prior to going to senior attorney.  I dreaded document review as a new patent trial associate but ediscovery is much better now.  I suspect an AI tool which incorporates database of your practice/firm/company will help.

  6. Update on IPO. Gist of the story and link below.

Go Digit Insurance re-files IPO papers after regulator concerns.

Go Digit's latest filing shows it has changed its employee stock rights to stock option plans after approving the plan through a special resolution on March 27.

The company, last valued at $3.5 billion by Sequoia Capital, provides general insurance services.

  7. Appreciate the comments from cubsfan, bluegold on lifting/exercising.  It is inspirational.  Another to add - incorporate meditation and/or breathing along with yoga.  Exercise your brain and maintain flexibility.  I am not in the 50s but in much better shape now -- I do P90x, Insanity, weightlifting, cardio, 15 minutes of meditation and 2 days of yoga.  These activities along with time with family/friends and reading round out my top three.  Hoping I am not a couch potato in my 70s.

You have that half-right, IMO.  What you should be asking yourself is, "If FFH screwed the minority shareholders in the Odyssey Re transaction, and again in the Fibrek transaction, and once again in the ATCO transaction, what will happen to minority shareholders of FFH if the time ever comes that the Watsa family wants to take FFH private?"

Good point, and that day may come.  I also own BAM and have similar concerns expressed about Flatt.  There is a proposed email from an ATCO shareholder in the ATCO thread if anyone wants to join the cause.  As @Viking pointed out, this is good for FFH but maybe not compared to buying back FFH.

  9. Congrats.  Which country/state? There are laws/regulations related to leaves.  FMLA allows for 12 weeks if I recall correctly.  I would suggest talking to HR and specifically ask about paternity leave.  Looking elsewhere may not lead to a better outcome unless you can close within the next two months and defer start date to/until after new arrival.  If you like where you are then looking elsewhere may not be a benefit.

As a father, I would suggest spreading out the leave esp. if everything goes normally.  The first couple of weeks for sure but afterwards break it out to give some time for everyone to adjust.

  10. Have a friend who has 70 acres in Southern California around the wine region (Temecula).  He is open to having 10 or so acres dedicated to Mango groves.  Anyone have leads on companies or farmers who can set up a mango orchard?  Land is zoned for agriculture and surrounded by vineyards.  I do not have a lot of details but anticipate there will be costs involved in prepping the land (outside of just planting and gathering the plants).  He mentioned that there are vineyard set up services who set up vineyards for $25K per 5 acre.  The cost of getting the land ready is a separate charge though.  Any leads welcome. Thanks.

  11. My personal opinion to boost cognitive focus:  afternoon naps, fast mimicking diet and meditation are other things to try/review.  Meditation is by far the hardest. I use vipassana meditation technique but there are countless others.  The craving mind is a good book to read regarding benefits of meditation.

Information on fast mimicking diet can be found at https://prolonfmd.com/fasting-mimicking-diet/.  There are DIY recipes available as well.  If you try fast mimicking diet you should at least have your baseline vitals (blood tests) done so that you can compare your results.
