Movies and TV shows (general recommendation thread)
Parsad replied to Liberty's topic in General Discussion
Speaking of Westerns...this one coming out today with Peter Dinklage and Juliette Lewis looks pretty darn good! Cheers! -

For those that enjoy Pearl Jam...one of the finer songs they've written in the last decade or so. Lyrics are fantastic and Vedder's voice remains solid! Cheers! -
It's why Munger used to roll his eyes every time Whitney would say his name before asking a question at the Berkshire AGM's. I thought he was a prick the first time I met him...nothing's changed! Cheers!

Same reason I'll be watching as well...I'm also a huge Costner fan when he's in Westerns...Silverado, Dances With Wolves, Open Range, Yellowstone, Wyatt Earp, now Horizon! But for those that don't love Westerns as much, I thought I would just let them know not to waste their time. Cheers! -

Watched Kevin Costner's Horizon...very disappointing. Only bright spots were when Costner was on the screen himself, pretty much playing John Dutton from Yellowstone! I love Westerns, but this was completely disjointed and uses every Western story we've already seen in the last 75 years. Better off just watching an old Sergio Leone classic! Cheers! -

What is your top 3 business/finance/investing books you've read?

It's a mindset change book. Won't teach you how to buy stocks or businesses, but will help you focus on areas that will create wealth. Cheers! -

They rushed the last episode where they essentially wrapped up the future of the Seven Kingdoms in 30 minutes. Arya goes through everything she does to simply walk away from killing Cersei?! That makes no sense at all! Daenerys goes batshit crazy?! Jon, the rightful king sails away from both the North and ruling the Seven Kingdoms after he kills Daenerys?! Ending was just a mess, including the writing, since Martin never finished the last book so Benioff and Weiss put it together based on conversations with Martin. Cheers! -

Movie was terrific, but miscast. Otherwise would have succeeded like Heat. I've spent years thinking about this...kind of like how the ending to GOT was screwed up! Colin Farrell didn't have any of the charm of Don Johnson...should have been Matthew McConaughey. Gong Li was also a big mistake...no chemistry with Colin Farrell. Could have been someone like Marion Cotillard or Zhang Ziyi. Jamie Foxx was excellent, as was Naomi Harris and Elizabeth Rodriguez as Trudy and Gina. Foxx had the charisma of Phillip Michael Thomas, but a more explosive intensity that fit this version of the show. Castillo was also miscast...should have used someone like Andy Garcia or Benicio Del Toro. I love Michael Mann's movies, but as a Miami Vice superfan who waited nearly two decades to see a movie of it...it could have been much better! Cheers! -
What is your top 3 business/finance/investing books you've read?
Parsad replied to schin's topic in General Discussion
My 3 Books: 1. Intelligent Investor & Securities Analysis - both by Ben Graham...read either or read both! 2. Buffett's Letters to Shareholders...should be core reading for all business/finance schools! 3. Margin of Safety - Seth Klarman...without using a margin of safety, it's all for nothing! And I'll give you a 4th...you'll never expect it...Cash Flow Quadrant by Robert Kiyosaki. I can't stand the guy, and somehow he's turned into a moron, but the book opened my eyes to putting my money into cash flowing assets and how we categorize ourselves into various occupations. It's a great book when someone, usually a novice investor, asks you about investing and finance...or for young teens/adults entering college or the work force. Other than that...read as many 10-K's and 10-Q's as you can. That will improve your accounting comprehension by leaps and bounds over time. Not sure I've read any accounting books that have helped me as much as just reading financial statements and the notes. Cheers! -
Shareholders need to consider their after-tax position in taxable accounts as well. I have so much in capital gains on FFH in my personal holding company, that at the new capital gains tax rate in Canada, it would set me back a long ways if I sold Fairfax only to buy something else. Unless BRK gets cut by 65%, it wouldn't make sense for me to sell Fairfax and buy Berkshire if both grew at 15%! That's why in that account, I will just annually buy VOO going forward and average in as cash comes in. The other core holdings bought like FFH, META, etc...will just let them keep compounding all of that capital gains. Now in non-taxable accounts...that's totally different! Cheers!

Evidence for underground water on Mars
Parsad replied to rogermunibond's topic in General Discussion
I think you need to go and read up a bit more on where robot technology is today, and where it is headed in the next 20-30 years. A robot exploration of Mars isn't a hundred years away, but probably will occur in the next decade or two. Cheers! -

Explorers died because they didn't have the technology to explore without risking human life. That isn't the case anymore. I'm also not talking about rovers...I'm talking about humanoid robots that can do tasks similar to human beings. We aren't as far off as you may think. Cheers! -

I think this is the ideal type of scenario for intelligent robots. As long as they have enough battery charging capacity via solar, they should lead the charge. No need to risk the lives of human beings. Won't matter how long they are in space, in different gravity, need for food, water, etc. Cheers! -

I knew and listened to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, but I had no idea about Cave's writings or the death of his two boys. He was on Stephen Colbert tonight and that's when I found out about that side. Here is an article about the death of his two boys and how it impacted his view of the world: https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/news/nick-cave-bad-seeds-children-b2594948.html He then started the Red Hand Files, where he takes letters sent to him and answers them. This one to Valerio was showcased on Colbert...what a brilliant lucid view of what life is and how loss defines our humanity: https://www.theredhandfiles.com/do-you-still-believe-in-us/ Cheers! -

I think most people were a bit disappointed that they didn't actually get the war going, but Season 3 should be epic...probably lots of crucial deaths and dead dragons! Cheers! -
+1! Cheers!

Whoops...my bad! The article said CSB's market cap is 6000 crore...I mis-read that as IDBI's market cap. Cheers!
-
Market cap is 6,000 crore or about $1B CDN...so 51% would be $510M. Add a premium and you are looking at max $750M CDN for 51%. Cheers!
-
It may or may not...I don't think it's going to hit $1300 CDN. Think about it: Current book is $980 USD. They add another $70 USD in book by year-end...worst case scenario! So $1050 USD book at year-end 2024. Next year they will make around $175 USD per share...so $1225 USD book value at year-end 2025. $1225 USD times 1.33 (assumes USD loses a bit of steam) = $1629 CDN...multiple of 1.25 = $2,036 CDN. Those numbers are very realistic, conservative and means a 40% return by the end of 2025 or 25%+ annualized over 18 months. Cheers!
