Kraven Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 [amazonsearch]Deep Value: Why Activists Investors and Other Contrarians Battle for Control[/amazonsearch] Tobias Carlisle, co-author of Quantitative Value, has a new book coming out called Deep Value. It's available for pre-order on Amazon, but the price is pretty steep at about $70.
cobafdek Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Eager to hear your review if you get to read it when it comes out in a month. (Decided to post a reply since this thread looked a little lonely - no replies for a whole month - outrageous! It's as if this board thinks Kraven, with his quantitative tendencies, has morphed into HarryLong.)
peter1234 Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 It's out now, anyone read it? I liked it. Good stories about Graham, Icahn, Pickens, Buffett, Greenblatt, Nifty Fifty Conglomerate area. Some quant backtesting, but much less than his previous book. ;)

On the other hand, that should make it more popular around these parts. ;)
crastogi Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 I am waiting for it to be available at the local business school library ;D
NormR Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 An interview with the author ... http://greenbackd.com/2014/08/27/my-interview-with-benzingas-deep-value-letter-author-tim-melvin-about-my-new-book-deep-value/
mike_3772 Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 Norm, thanks for that. Truly a great interview. I ordered the book while listening.
cubsfan Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 Norm - really enjoyed this interview - nice job. I just ordered the book.
manualofideas Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 Both of Toby Carlisle's books are superb, and he is always someone I enjoy listening to as well. He is definitely in the minority of investors who do in-depth and rigorous research. Here is a presentation Toby gave at last year's Deep Value Summit -- it not only includes an idea but also an overview of his deep value approach: http://www.valueconferences.com/2013/05/tobias-carlisle/
crastogi Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 Thanks for the presentation. A lot of it is covered in Quant value also. However, some of the slides were truncated. I am wondering if someone has the PDF file, or the video they are willing to share
CorpRaider Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 So the presentation is their methodology as discussed in Quantitative Value, right? Interesting to hear him talk about replicating the MF. Wes Gray has talked about their not being able to replicate it, but Carlisle explains that pretty easily and satisfactorily. BTW: Wes had some copies of QV on "sale" via his blog/amazon this week. I dunno if he sold out yet.

Still showing, so he must have more. I wonder if it will by autographed? lol
Kraven Posted September 3, 2014 Author Posted September 3, 2014 Toby Carlisle is doing a live chat on Reddit.
west Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 Toby Carlisle is doing a live chat on Reddit. Kraven is on reddit??? Joking aside, this is probably worthy of it's own thread. Things tend to get looked over otherwise. PS- Do you know about/follow r/SecurityAnalysis?

I'm not sure I know what Security Analysis you are referring to so I probably don't follow it.

dcollon Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 I really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it. I now have to go back and read his previous book. I think the combination of investment stories/successes with the quant analysis was well done.
peter1234 Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 Here are some links of him discussing his book http://www.thestreet.com/video/12871104/buffetts-berkshire-still-nimble-despite-size-says-deep-value-author.html http://www.bloomberg.com/video/activists-target-undervalued-cash-rich-companies-AAX6SC_BRbKBcvQMatbkew.html http://finance.yahoo.com/video/expensive-market-doesn-t-mean-203251056.html ;)
rainman Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 How is the performance of Toby's fund? Anybody knows?
