  1. Don't hold your breath. They'd have had to have sold some of their big positions to do anything meaningful, and they have not mentioned doing so. As an aside, the Dundee/DPM transaction yesterday shows how they could, in theory, offload some of the big stakes if they wanted. Indeed Unrelated (and I know that it is impossible at the moment) but if FFH was able to buy back its share at 0.6 BV with the same total quantity that it issued shares ABOVE BV for the Allied World purchase in 2016 that would have been a quite a coup worthy of a song. An SIB would be nice here....
  2. Maybe you should go farther out into the depreciation curve and buy 10 years or older. Usually the quirks and maintenance issues are well documented on the net at this age and you can typically buy, drive for a few years, and sell for the same price (Rinse and Repeat). It will add a level of humility and "i don't care what others think" to your subconscious as well which, I believe, is essential to being a great value investor. ;)
  3. Geez....This company is getting pounded.....just change the name to something else and this thing is 2x-3x higher. They are a software company! QNX in a 150+ million vehicles, their Certicom ECC patents and Endpoint FIPS certification is worth a lot more than the street realizes. Just the multiple they paid on Cylance is worth noting....far lower than Carbon Black or Crowdstrike. Its trading lower than when they were a melting ice cube :o
  4. MTY.TO or MTYFF....looks as if the Algos overreacted :o
  5. When I started investing in FFH many years ago, they were known as investment wizards with poor underwriting. Today, they are known for their good underwriting and poor investments. We have yet to see a Fairfax hitting on all cylinders! That being said, I'm part of the group that believes the future will be brighter for FFH <Please disregard my bias handle>
  6. Brian Bradstreet is buying again.... https://www.canadianinsider.com/node/7?menu_tickersearch=FIH+%7C+Fairfax+India+Holdings
  7. Ban guidance, not quarterly's.

  11. Oops..... this topic should be moved to Investment Ideas.
  12. Just wondering if Dazel is still holding this. Looks very interesting here, especially with the Tesla factory being built in the Reno area. This could be the catalyst they need to bank on their water assets.
  13. Zenith another jewel in Fairfax's crown!
  14. <quote>They constantly have to pay cash because of those swap contracts (even if in their mind, it will be recouped eventually if they keep the contract and the equities fall.</quote> On the Russell index swaps I believe FFH switched some of their long equity positions into long swaps so that they would help generate cash settlements to offset those arising from the index swaps. On the deflation swaps which are mark to market through IFRS accounting because they act as purchased option contracts (don't count toward hedge accounting). The counter party may have to escrow funds, according to Fairfax's wishes, but Fairfax's loss is limited to the premium paid plus or minus the closing value of the contract. There were some questions regarding the counter parties to these contracts at the ASM.
  15. I made 4k Botting in Diablo 3.....and exploiting the auction house. I eventually had all my accounts banned because I was running them on the same IP. ;D
  16. Is the efficiency of heating form the bulb the same as that from a heater? No, because some of the energy is "wasted" as light. I think a lot of the wasted energy comes from the conversion of AC to DC. Maybe I'm speaking generally, but the conversion for the LED bulb has some parasitic losses from the general delivery and conversion of the electricity. 17. Yayyy.... I might have my buying hat on tomorrow 8)
  18. Glacier Media (GVC) on the TSX.
  19. No Canadian brokers eh? I use Qtrade. I would say they are fair and average for price (winner of Globe and Mails best broker). Great customer service. They separate US margin from CAN margin but don't send US dollars to a US bank account via EFT like other brokers do (Just CAN). This is remedied by converting USD to CAN (or vice versa) at spot rate in the broker margin account. Simply buy a USD/CAD etf in the appropriate margin account and then call the broker and have them journal the entry to the other opposite margin account...viola.....spot rate minus a in and out commission. They don't like that too often though.
  20. I thought 40 was over the hill? ;) Happy Birthday
  21. I used to sell calls and puts on XSB to get my "coupon payments" right now which worked well for a while, but the liquidity of the options became an issue when I wanted the cash.
  22. Your pistons probably hydrolocked when it went under. Not sure if you need a complete rebuild. http://www.ehow.com/info_12177155_gets-damaged-engine-hydrolock.html
