Agreed with a mediocre capital allocator at the helm.

VRX and AIG. Valeant needs to exceed their 2016 estimates and prove to the market how durable their portfolio is along with demonstrating to the market they do not need to buy other businesses as that only enhances their returns going forward. The next catalyst is the results of the special committee, even though Philidor is now in the rear view mirror, it will give the stock another boost proving management's credibility. AIG, management is in a tough position as they need to prove it makes sense to continue with the current structure and Mr. Icahn will continue to push management to deliver or break up the company. Either or, it's a win/win for shareholders. With the potential for further interest rate hikes, that will further enhance returns going forward.

In my short investing career (8 years approx.) I have only been burned twice - ATPG and SD. ATPG was a very small allocation and I got out with a enjoyable 30ish% loss but being the highly intellectual guy I am, I decided to take a 5-6% position in Sandridge and I am down an even more enjoyable 95%. I have decided, O&G is outside my circle of competence and I will avoid this industry all together. It has been a learning experience and a mistake I will not make again.

Don't forget that Berkshire runs a well run insurance operation in which they gets paid for their float which juices individual stock returns. It's something a lot of people miss and has and will continue to make shareholders a tremendous amount of money.

I also added to my Berkshire position. I cannot wait for him to announce a bump into the buyback threshold to 1.3x!!!

Hi all, Does anyone hold their stock in physical certificates? I am looking at transferring out some stock from my brokerage account as they are lifetime positions. 1. How does it work for positions held in a registered account (RRSP)? If i transfer them out of my brokerage, will i have to pay the withholding tax or is there a way it stays registered but I just hold the physical cert? 2. How about dividends, does the company directly send cheques to my house? 3. Anyone know the rough costs? My brokerage wanted $50 for securities in my CAD account and the ones in my USD is $200 per certificate which I found very steep.

What else can we say about Bill besides the fact he is a brilliant investor and it's quantified by his amazing returns. I am a large shareholder in CN Rail and still kicking myself in the ass for not buying a large stake in CP knowing what HH did to CN.
-
Yup, he has been great for shareholders though. Look what he has done with Apple and I cannot wait for him to kick AIGs ass :) Lots of interesting stuff, but man can Icahn ramble!? He's pretty old so you give him some leeway, but he just stumbles from one topic to another, occasionally throwing out gems.

What is an RCA? Have you investigated the idea of seeing if there is a rollover into another type of retirement structure like an RCA? I have't checked. If there there is withholding on US dividends for now in the RCA but it would allow you to sell out of the RCA after you become non-resident and then the capital gains tax would be much less depending on the tax treaty. The strategy would also reduce the tax rate on RRSP withdrawals from top marginal rate to as low as 15% after you reach the forced withdrawal age.

Hi all, I need some advice. I have a number of US companies (I am sitting on very large gains on them) in my Cash account which pay dividends and I am being hit with a withholding tax + the dividends count towards my income and I am in the high income tax. I also have a large number of Canadian corporations in my TFSA/RRSP which I do not pay any taxes against the dividends. I remember in the past there was a switch feature in which you can switch an equal amount from your RRSP account to your Cash account however that loophole was closed by the CRA. Can anyone provide me any advice? I appreciate it...

I added to my VRX position by 29%.
-
Unfortunately we both know that will be reduced to $5.5k/year. I am going to miss income splitting. :-(
-
I just bought a large position in Valeant Pharma. The sell-off is excessive and in the next 3-6 months these issues will be forgotten.

Is anyone else getting duplicate adds at the bottom of the screen?

Remember, the law is trying to prevent wearing Niqab's ONLY during the swearing in ceremonies yet when they walk out of the ceremony they can put it back on along with every other check and balance before they reach the ceremony (tests etc...). On top of that, the court ruled they are allowed to wear it so really........................................ What is the problem? Bigotry if you ask me.
-
Agreed. Foreign policy conservatives are an absolute disaster, domestic they are better then the other 2! lol I am going to enjoy income splitting this year for the first time + i enjoy the $160 child cheques a year; if conservatives lose I will miss out on almost $5k / year in tax benefits (+ potential loss in not keeping the increase in TFSA) Canadian politics are absolute BS... We have 2 socialist parties and one in the middle.

guys, Cara has been a great investment... Lol

Hey my fellow Canadian CoB&F board members... Our elections are around the corner, what is everyone's thoughts?

Yup and I am waiting patiently before going VERY large into Fairfax to enjoy the blowout.

Maybe US rails but CN Rail is the top dog railroad in N.A.
