  1. Must have some following. I can't remember a stock having trading halted over an analysts report. I'm assuming they were short before the release. :o ;)
  2. "Muddy Waters" ? Is that like a Seeking Alpha site.
  3. Had to lol at the thought of pigs as herd animals. I'm guessing that you haven't tried to herd a group that were out somewhere. It never fails to amaze me what a bad rep cattle get when they are used by humans in a way they weren't really designed or areas were they don't belong. Right from a pollution stand point when they are crowded in massive feedlots to high quality grains being used to fatten them faster or huge dairies in the middle of desserts using precious water. None of these are the cattle's doing. All of it is supported and encouraged as development by various levels of government. There is a lot of land that is too fragile for grain production that cattle can turn the low quality forage into high quality protein. In our area there is a lot of land that shouldn't be used for crop production but that doesn't stop them from being worked up and eroding or drained into creeks that then become swollen and flood or erode other areas downstream when all the runoff has to move at once in the spring. It's not happenstance that all these rivers are flooding at higher levels all the time.
  4. I would think one may have to differentiate between western diet and food production. As far as food production, imagine how much could be produced just in the cities with lawns taken out and produce growing in its place. Throw in a couple fruit trees per yard and one would have all that food with the same water and fertilizer use that was going into lawn. The micro climate of the city also allows for a longer growing season and different crop selections than the surrounding country. I've read articles from people coming back from volunteering in food distribution programs in Africa. They were amazed in some areas to see tall grass growing that would be just burned off when dead. Asking the locals why they don't put a few chickens out or work up for a garden, they said it would just be stolen. So not so much of a food problem as a security problem. You keep seeing articles about how these huge industrialized farms are the most efficient ways to produce food. One then wonders why the E.U., U.S., and Canadian ag. subsidy programs continue to be so well funded. Maybe we have too much government involvement in trying to direct what they feel the model of efficiency should be, instead of letting the market decide.
  5. Yes, who would have thought you need FDA approval for fast food packaging. Wonder if it is just because it is recycled, or does it apply to virgin pulp also. How broad is the product mix that falls under this need for approval, are things like napkins included and which falls under more stringent regulations the packaging or the food. ;) Something interesting to ponder on for the morning.
  6. The question then is why can't they just shutter these bloody plants till 2013 when they supposedly have a decent contract for them. There is no synergy to the rest of their operations by keeping them going, so it's a hugely idiotic management decision to keep them running and dragging down the rest.
  7. That really says it all. It's sad that humour would be seen in this.

    New FBK

Just came across this while searching for something else. I thought I remembered something about FBK in labour negotiations, not sure were they are at on that. http://foresttalk.com/index.php/2011/05/10/workers-on-strike-at-tembecs-pulp-mill-in-matane-quebec/ "Workers on strike at Tembec’s pulp mill in Matane, Quebec May 10th, 2011 | Posted in Labour Negotiations | 1 comment » TembecFollowing a breakdown in labour discussions between Tembec representatives and the union representatives at the Tembec high-yield pulp mill located in Matane, Quebec, unionized employees did not report to work this morning and went out on strike. Consequently, all production activities have been suspended indefinitely. Tembec is monitoring the situation very closely and is putting into place measures that will ensure uninterrupted supply to its customers. The plant in Matane employs 143 people, of which 99 are unionized, and ships to customers in North America, Europe and Asia. Source: Tembec"
  9. "I never drew those conclusions from his actions. " I can understand how you may not, especially with my assuming you are inside the investment industry. But I would hope you would understand how a private investor like myself views a lot of information with a little jaded view. "The investment community is a small place, the value-side of it, smaller still. As Parsad will know from Fairfax, idle and unsubstantiated talk can easily spread. You and I are lucky in that sense. You can say what you like about me, but because I am anonymous, I don't have to worry about the reputation of my character. For Harry, it's different. When you put something down on the internet, it's recorded and easily searchable through the Google index. Also, I'm sure Parsad can tell you that this place is monitored by some of the big wigs of the investment industry. Perfectly understandable that Harry should react." That really was his choice as far as anonymity, I go under Tyska just because that is how most do it. If you really want to know my name it would take very little work to find though, as I use that name or a variation on all boards I'm on. Or you could just ask. I'm actually envious of someone who can write eloquently enough on a stock to be accused of pump and dump . :) But he is obviously trying to make a name for himself and you said he is young. But again in my view, a simple, that was not at all my intention, response would have sufficed, and probably would look more impressive to a big wig following. An investor like myself may not even be who he is trying to attract as a follower to his articles either, I don't know. "Finally, Harry created several other threads on things like SURW, FMMH, and EBIX and we generated quite a lot of debate that was both positive and negative, so to suggest that Harry took the ball and ran off home just because someone disagreed with him is disingenuous. " I'm not sure how it can be disingenuous when it truly raises a concern about why did someone do that. And that it has been done numerous times only reinforces that concern. The feeling is ingenuous even if the reality isn't.
  10. As I am guessing that most of the posters here have been investing for a while and are not complete newbies to it. Not in any way to suggest that I'm a seasoned veteran, as I am continually learning and feel I have a long long way to go. But it may be worthwhile to keep in mind that a lot of people new to investing may be lurking and trying to learn how to filter all the information that is available. That being said, I understand DCGs' comments about how Harry's' actions may "appear" and feel both Harry and Ballin are not reading them with the intention they were meant. It wasn't meant to impugn Harry's character, but to point out how certain action may be perceived by whoever does them, rightly or wrongly. Just ask Warren if actions aren't a reflection on your character and investment value. If I had just read any article on a possible investment idea then when searching came across information that they had deleted a thread discussing the merits a flag would be raised. Just like when I read an article praising the merits I give more credit if the writer has put there own money in. If they are touting it and saying they have no holding in right now, or are planning to. I can't help but think they are just filling space for the sake of filling space. I'm sure everyone here have little things that can add more or less weight to an investment decision. Would be an interesting thread. Again I'm just talking about appearance, I have no knowledge of anyone's intent. Forgot, something that probably can't be said enough, thanks to Parsad for a great job, that at times probably feels like a thankless job.
  11. Try running Firefox, it gives you a spell checker everywhere. Ha ha, you know what? I've been a firefox user for years and I only noticed this feature was turned on by default when I read this post. Wow, I'm impressed that you can go years without noticing the feature. Not many posts or e-mails without the red underline showing up for me. :(
  12. Try running Firefox, it gives you a spell checker everywhere.
  13. I think the biggest problem may be, and I'm sure we are all guilty here, is not moving over to a new thread when the original subject is veered off. All though it is hard to know at what point that is, because most subjects do not involve only one thing that effects them. IE a lot of investment decisions are affected by political decisions, so I guess once it moves off actual policy it may be time to abandon that thread. I personally haven't came across any one poster on this board that I would want to block all their posts. I may disagree with some of their ideas but agree with others, live and let live. Although I'm somewhat jealous of the very eloquent writers on here, that can take many paragraphs for a one sentence point. ;D
  14. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Religious-groups-question-apf-2130248931.html?x=0&sec=topStories&pos=5&asset=&ccode= "A coalition of religious groups headed by a nun, a priest and the CEO of a Jewish organization will be there to press Goldman Sachs Group Inc. to evaluate whether it's paying executives too much. Goldman CEO Lloyd Blankfein will have no choice but to listen. The group has won a coveted spot on the annual meeting agenda. The religious contingent also wants the investment bank to evaluate the pay discrepancy between high-paid workers and those at the bottom. And they're asking the company to explain something many shareholders want to know: why compensation for Goldman's top five executives rose to $69.6 million in 2010 even as profits and revenues have declined." It seems to be deathly quiet from institutional holders and such on the topic.
  15. 5.75% for ten years may be costing them less than their float is lately. :-\ With their investment prowess I'm not sure I'd be upset with them borrowing more at that rate, and handing it over to the investment team.
  16. A lot of generalizations, nay I would say mind reading has to take place to fit someone into the "neo-con" term from the descriptions I received. But to put specific policies to the litmus test of above, lets put Obomas' recent actions against the checklist above. a tendency to see the world in binary good/evil terms Just about every Hollywood movie for the last century. But like the movies Oboma felt the end justified the means of entering a sovereign country without permission to assassinate an unarmed man that was viewed as evil. There is probably enough in that statement to cover point two-five and seven. Especially throwing in authorizing the killing of Somali pirates and the bombing of Libya, although you can take unilateral out on that. focus on the Middle East I'm sure if you pulled Hillarys' travel itinerary since the present administration has taken office, no other area would come close. But then I've agreed with all these decisions of Oboma so I guess I would fit in whatever term is used to describe his actions. And just in case it was missed, my last post was written in satire, for when broad generalizations are used and not specific policies put forward, not much else can be done. But I do love the one about low interest rates and monetary inflation, that policy has sure changed.
  17. Just wondering if someone on the Left can tell me what neo-con means. All neo means is new or modern and oddly it only seems to be used by the lefties with the implicit effect of causing a sinister shudder to go over the reader. Can a person get a special decoder ring when you buy a Che Guevara t-shirt along with instructions for a secret hand shake so it can't fall into the enemies hands. Cause it obviously has to have another meaning or else wouldn't there be a neo-lib. Or haven't they had a new or modern thought in decades. And would Jack be a neo-commie. ;D
  18. I'm willing to guess that no one on this board has spent their entire lives next to a reserve. My Friend lives in a new subdivision in Caledonia.. from his back yard, he could see the Native Flag from that blockade they had going. I had visited his house - turn left exactly at the street that was blocked. Just shows wrongs are never righted by more wrongs.
  19. Exactly, if you are going to isolate yourself as a group, you will only build yourself up by working on positives in the group, not wallowing in all the negativity and blame. And from my vantage they were very close to that in the 70s', before Trudeau started pumping money with no accountability into the reserves. All he proved was we didn't have the corner on greedy and corrupt politicians. ;)
  20. I'm willing to guess that no one on this board has spent their entire lives next to a reserve. While there is no denying the things that were done to them in the past it is really no different than what has happened to just about any group of people in history. I'm sure when the vikings invaded a village there wasn't a lot of cultural sensitivity to the people there, they took what they wanted, killed who they wanted, and stayed or left when they wanted unless some one stronger came along and did the same to them. The European and Asian boundaries were in continuous flux, with whatever new conqueror imposing there religion and culture on the people while they were there. So it gets pretty tiring how this is something that the "natives" have a corner on. But back to the point of how they are treated today, Calvin Helin, http://www.spiritorca.com/ , tells best in his books what the worst thing happening is today. Something I've seen with my own eyes, but thank God there are a few Native leaders who see it and are speaking out. The Govt has been trying to make equality of outcome, when all it can really control is equality of opportunity. Even a Native activist, just elected to the Conservatives in Newfoundland, has stopped fighting everything and has come to the realization that you can't fund social programs without economic growth. If only more people, regardless of race, could have an epiphany like that.
  21. Myth If I could rec you, I would for that post. Not knowing as much about you as say Bronco does, I'll assume you are an American. It seems when it comes to politics most don't want to look objectively at what each party actually does. Or look at how much people who say they are on the right demand from the government. A simple one is Ag policy in the States. Most of the people in rural Ag states would be all over the statement "less Govt", but touch the floor price for grains, buying dairy for school lunches, or horrors Ethanol subsidies and well you know what will happen. Same for Ag subsidies here in Canada. As a farmer, I would be stupid to not take advantage of them. But they don't do what they are portrayed to do and their would still be Agriculture going on without them. Just like there would still be cars to drive if they stopped bailing out auto makers. But then, thinking like Bronco and living in Canada, were does one align themselves. With a party that says it believes in smaller Govt, yet expands it through a plethora of programs. Or the parties that don't even hide that they want to expand govt to intrude on personnel freedom. Conundrum indeed.

    New FBK

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/04/28/domtar-idUSL3E7FS3J020110428 "Q1 adj EPS $3.25 vs est $2.35" "April 28 (Reuters) - Domtar Corp's first-quarter profit topped market estimates, as a result of higher paper shipments and higher selling prices of pulp, but the Canadian pulp and paper producer expects shipments to decline this year. " Would be nice if FBK estimates were out by as much.
  23. Looks like everyone was having a great time and attentive to the talk after. I'm guessing politics wasn't discussed once.:>)
