It certainly makes a person keep going back and testing ones decision and trying to see what they missed. When you are in a sector that is booming and all around there are articles on companies and investors reaping the benefits but you sit with the wallflower.

The right answer. "We're running this company in the shareholders' interest ... Everything is for sale at the right price ;D". Perhaps its why I aint a CEO. It's a shame you aren't the CEO at this point, it disturbs me that he would say that something is not for sale. If not, then tell the shareholders what your plans are, that make it not for sale. If you truly are managing it in their best interest.

"We're running this company in the shareholders' interest ... the U.S. mills are not for sale." I worry that those two things may not agree with each other.

Depending on what the extra transition costs were to move it from a 14 to 10 day of scheduled shutdown.

With all the focus on Libya and oil. Has anyone came across if the NZ earthquake will affect any pulp production there like the Chile one did.

I was happy when it finally passed $1.42, which is my ACB across all my accounts, bought some way too early at too high a price, which made averaging down hard. I obviously don't have as much on this horse as some of you, makes up a little more than 15% of my port. Has any one ever figured and posted what FFHs' ACB is on this. Now Total Energy Services, that makes up close to 30% of my port.

Makes one also wonder were CFX may set it's dividend at. Dan
  9. In my opinion, for what it's worth ;D, I feel he made the argument that they should be allowed to fail. If billionaires are buying into things with the expectation that the government (taxpayer) is obliged to step in to protect shareholders, something is seriously wrong. Again, I may be reading it wrong, but he seemed to come across as arrogant, which I've never really got off him before. Dan

Eric, Thank you for emphasizing to me that the market is an auction. But what I was referring to was, when most goods were sold at public auction. Certain companies would hire people to circulate in the crowd and if they were good at reading people could wring quite a few more bids out of people. Some would even use their ring men to yell out bids that weren't there. They got more business from selling higher than the next auctioneer and more commission from higher prices. Until people realized that they were in fact bidding against the seller as the auctioneer is agent for the seller. While it can be a hard thing to catch, once they were suspected, business dried up as people lost faith in the fairness of that auction house. I'm sure even Ebay frowns against that practice today. Not sure that I can fully explain, it's more of a gut feeling. It feels like an auction house that has people in the crowd bidding things up. I realize it's not quite the same, but can't shake the feeling. Maybe it's because the brokers are buying and selling for themselves also on the information. I will say that a lot of things are allowed and available in the market, but that fact doesn't always make them right. ;) Dan

Off topic here, but does this information being available to traders just not seem a little wrong. It may be just me but it feels like going to an auction with everyone around you knowing what is the most you can bid. Not a direct comparison but still feels that way. On topic. Is it the big stake that FFH has in this company holding it back. I can't see how all its peers can move so much and FBK just sits there. Dan

I'm guessing that the Q4 release will be around the same as last year, towards the end of Feb. Has there been any announcement on it or not.
  14. This might be one of those questions that SharperDingaan has one of his formulas for, like with FBK. But probably more a question for Vegas odds makers. CLM just announced a takeover by Cliffs today at 17.25 a share. Then you have trading volume of 20% of the outstanding shares after the announcement all trading over that price. So what would the odds be that the price isn't moved up or another bidder comes in. Probably not a lot of profit taking on buying and selling the shares on the same day as the price sort of trended down through the day.
  15. Sure has missed out on a lot of the gains in the market. Sold out the kids account in June at little over 402, to insulate their account a little from the massive hurricane season forecast ;). Bought back in today at a little under 399. It's not easy being a FFH convert. Dan
  16. Timely thread in that I just received a Country Guide magazine today that has the ROA's for various ag ventures. Greenhouses, nursery and floriculture came in at the top with an ROA of 6.52%, followed by potato farms at 5.23%. At the bottom were cattle at .84% and hog at 2.8%, although grain and oilseed was only 3.33%. These would be Canadian numbers but should be helpful in comparisons to other investments. The numbers are from 04-08. I'm also old enough to remember farming in the 70s' and the world is running out of food and they aren't making any more farmland hype then to fuel a spike in land prices. Along with the Ice age is coming and production will fall, but why worry about history when we have the future. Dan

I think at this point it is pretty much a given that it's in Fairfaxs' hand as far as unlocking the value of this company. I sure hope they can unlock more than $1.50 though, this shareholder wouldn't be happy. I agree with some of the other posters on the last thread that it's concerning to see the lack of insider buying from management. They are obviously in the income bracket that has disposable money for investment. So what are they investing in that has a better outlook for them, or are they just putting in their job one day at a time and have no foresight. In which case hopefully FFH will move them out.

My thoughts are that all stockhouse boards are a cesspool of trolls. Never came across anything but garbage when I used to go there. Not worth a sane persons time.

Am I the only one that is slightly amazed that there was 5 or 6 times the average volume and virtually no movement in price either way? I can't recall ever seeing that with any stock that I have followed before, but maybe it happens more than I know.

Quite the volume of shares moving today. Over half a million so far, considering it was 10-15 thousand not that long ago. Maybe a lot buying that can't exercise, will be interesting to see how many FFH pick up.

They showed up in my TD account today. Cardboard, interesting take on how FFH may have played it, because yes, who in their right mind would subscribe if it's trading below the subscription and will anyone start buying the shares on the market that they would have subscribed to. But then who is driving the price down with the continuous stream of shares for sale. Very interesting indeed.

Not necessarily in a rush for them to show up, although they were going for 6 cents when I first noticed :( . More just curious about seeing them trading a few days ago already and not being in any ones accounts. Was wondering how that is possible and were did those shares come from just to get an understanding on how things work. Was going to add that even if you factor in the concern on pulp prices sliding. There seems to be no value given for their power generation that will come on line, with a good chunk of the capital provided through federal grants. If the rates for their "green" power is anything like what I have seen being given for wind and solar. One has to wonder at what point if pulp does slide does it make sense to shut down the plant and divert all the power into the grid.

Along the lines of my original question, were are these rights coming from that are being traded if they haven't shown up in any ones accounts yet. Are you able to trade shares that you anticipate receiving?

fbk.rt I would think they should show up anywhere that you get quotes now. I just looked on the TSX site 15,000 shares today at 5 or 6 cents.
