  1. Maybe he should start picking up some shares in FFH, now that would be an interesting story. Dan
  2. Should probably start a poll to see how many Canadians feel we will get our 10 dollars with the recent run-up in the loonie. :) Dan
  3. I had mentioned that total energy was having quite a run up a while back just to see if anyone else here follows it at all. I would suspect their run-up may be more to do with the compression side as they have proprietary rights on a compressor that is supposed to be more efficient especially in the shale gas wells. They also have a drilling department that has had a pretty low utilization rate the last few quarters. But if I'm remembering right they don't have any horizontal drilling capability. Unless an upturn in conventional gas drilling is also expected. Dan
  4. The latest that they have announced it though is the 6th of Jan., so only two more days to not go later. When they first started they were announcing in Dec.. Dan
  5. They will only fall when their marketing campaign no longer works on the masses. Dan

    FFH/LVLT?

Have been reading through the thread and am unable to grasp what your direction is ValueCarl. Are you on the fence about investing in Fairfax and want someone to convince you it is the right fit for you. Or do you feel it is a bad investment and have no interest in it, but then I don't put this much effort into something that I have written off. I guess there could also be other reasons you may have. Dan
  7. Just wondering if anyone here follows this one. Quite a jump today on top of a steady rise for the past while. Not really any increase in volume though. http://ca.finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=TOT.TO&t=3m Maybe they are making inroads into the shale gas market with their compressors. Dan

    Run-up

Does there really need to be another reason. Would hate to say there is a pattern but it ran up towards the div last year then fell off. We are still below the high it hit in that run-up with a lot more value in the company. Dan
  10. Dazel All I can say is my thoughts exactly. Just a lot more eloquently stated. Dan
  11. Still looking to expand. TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - 11/24/09) - Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited (TSX:FFH - News)(TSX:FFH.U - News) announced today that it has received preliminary regulatory approval from the Superintendence of Private Insurance in Brazil (SUSEP) for the establishment of a new wholly-owned Brazilian property and casualty insurance company, Fairfax Brasil Seguros Corporativos S.A. http://ca.us.biz.yahoo.com/iw/091124/0562754.html?.v=1 Dan
  12. Haven't come across anyones thoughts if they will keep reporting in U.S. dollars with the de-listing.I'm not sure that I see the benefit, other than not having to do conversions. And if they keep reporting in U.S. dollars will they keep the dividend in same. I'm overall happy with the change, always had a niggling feeling that the arbitrage was hurting price, nothing to really prove it though. Don't quite understand if there will be that opportunity with the two currency shares on the TSX or if both shares will be automatically priced for exchange rate. Dan
  13. Shame that it wasn't set up to track it's Canadian holdings also, but still an interesting spreadsheet still. Dan
  14. Does anyone happen to know what FFHs' adjusted cost base on them is. Or do they still hold them. Looked at the 13f link from a previous post but seems to be only U.S. stocks. Do they not have to report Canandian stocks. Dan
  15. I was wondering why FFH was down somewhat today, only a 40+ million gain from yesterday. :) The share price seems to have an inverse relationship to results. Dan
  16. That was the point I was trying to get across when I pointed out the estimated earnings per share that I came across. Not that the numbers were relevant but that there is all sorts of headlines when some companies beat the estimates they put out by a few cents. Dan
  17. What I found interesting was the earinng estimates from this link this morning. http://ca.us.biz.yahoo.com/research/earncal/20091029.html?t=ffh Company Symbol EPSEstimate* Time Add to MyCalendar Fairfax Financial Holdings FFH 9.91 After Market Close Add How much press would anothe company get beating an estimate by 3 times. Dan
  18. I'm just seeing a little over 7800 on tdwaterhouse.
  19. Was also thinking that with the increased float, it might take some of the volatility out of the stock. It's been a fun ride so far. Also refreshing to see a company not giving discounts on their offerings. Dan
  20. So is this all about the volume off shares these investors wanted to buy. Otherwise they could have been buying them at a discount all summer. Or are they interested in buying in once ORH is going to be folded in. Dan
  21. Thanks, it was just one of those things I thought would be that way but wasn't sure. Dan
  22. I have been reading the stratagies of selling calls and buying puts and have what I'm sure is a simple question for someone here. With an interlisted stock like FFH that you purchased on the TSX and hold in a Cdn. dollar account. Seeing there are no Cdn. listed options if you sold a call on the US exchange is it considered a covered call? Thanks, Dan
  23. I have no problem with the ads, sorry to say that I never even really noticed them until it was brought up here, which probably isn't a big help to Sanj. Has the market got people so stressed, or is this just a general decline in being appreciative of what we get. Keep up the good work, I for one appreciate it. Dan

    Observation

Just wondering why 1.3x book, is that an industry average? Dan
  25. The members of this board are of a higher standard than other places. But have seen it degenerate into a petty personal rating as opposed to a content rating on other sites. Would be pity to allow that possibility, even if remote, here. Just my 2 cents worth. Dan
