  2. How did you get files from the webcast stream? Thanks.
  3. I wouldn't be too hard on yourself. I bought a number of REIT preferreds in early 2009 only to sell then for nice 1-2x gains and miss 6-10x gains. :o I think the conventional wisdom and the money have flowed into A grade commercial office DBD, apartments, and hotels. I like the hotel space myself; they cut back costs to the bone and have showed nice cash flow growth as REVPAR has recovered. Also like quality retail... ROIC which has Stuart Tanz building up a shopping center portfolio after selling Pan Pacific pretty close to the top to Kimco.
  4. Any one know of a way to listen to earnings CC on the iPad? Is there an app that supports WMA or RealAudio for iPad? Thanks.
  5. The melt value of pre 1982 pennies is better. Problem is finding the old copper pennies.
  6. The c-wtb have a $17.85 strike and I think you have to make heroic assumptions to get C shares close to that strike before 2018. But I'd have to think about it again if they were priced around 5 to 10 cents. c-wta are a decent return (10%). If C trades at $12.61 by 2018 then you have double.
  7. These are trading today in volume. c-wta and c-wtb on Yahoo
  8. Anyway have updates on Lindmark Capital performance or any of Peter Lindmark's 2010 letters? Thanks.
  9. http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/11_05/b4213090559511.htm?campaign_id=yhoo I have to admit I'm amazed at the size of their stores. Clothing seems flimsy and ephemeral but that seems to be what their demo wants.
  10. From the country that invented the Big Gulp. Not a surprise.
  11. http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/915191/000095012311003070/o67811sc13dza.htm Looks like in addition to the debt-to-equity conversion, Fairfax was buying ABH when issued prior to exchange trading. 5.3 million shares at an aggregate purchase price of $120.3 million.
  12. Bronco - This is why you truly are a hero member and I just a junior. :)
  13. Lampert is not the CEO. He is only the Chairman. Agree with Myth, that is pure chart porn. Thanks for posting BVH.
  14. http://www.moneysense.ca/2007/10/26/canadas-best-small-investors-2007-a-beautiful-mind/ Is it the same guy who was written up in 2007?
  15. http://portal.acs.org/portal/PublicWebSite/education/whatischemistry/landmarks/newproducts/CTP_004465 Pretty good history of synthetic rubber. There is one candidate, dodecyl mercaptan, also known as OEI "one essential ingredient." During WWII, GR-S or government rubber-styrene was produced by all 4 of the major rubber companies under a shared agreement. After 1955, the government got out of this business. Not sure if there was only 1 company producing OEI, but that would be the search target for me.
  16. I find it interesting that the second oldest industry doesn't provide coverage on the first oldest industry in history. Except maybe in Amsterdam and Las Vegas...
  17. Sprott's argument on silver sounds very much like the argument for natural gas. NG is 6:1 BTU content to oil, was trading at 12:1, and many including Southeastern's Hawkins and Cately argued that it would trade back to 6:1. It didn't. Now it trades somewhere between 15 to 20:1. It's just a mean reversion to a historical relative ratio.
  18. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/05/magazine/05Dimon-t.html?_r=1&hpw Roger Lowenstein profiles Jamie Dimon for the New York Times Magazine. Duff McDonald's Last Man Standing is a pretty good biography of Dimon. Lots of good background on his rise with Sandy Weill in the Commercial Credit days.

  20. FFH holdings of SD common have bounced all over the place. They are much more steady with their holdings of the 6% convertible preferred (2 million shares - 18.4m common) and the 8.5% conv. preferred (912,500 shares - 11.382m common). From April 2010 when they sold 7m shares of common and had only 4.2m shares, they now have 15.4m shares of common? Not sure how they did that and only filed one Form 4.
  21. Enstar Group (ESGR) is something of a compounding machine. Running off reinsurance portfolios.
  22. You can email or surf (kinda) on the 3G network used by the various Kindle devices. But the browser is very slow and simple (more like the Lynx browser from the 1990s). If you want books, pdf, email, Internet surfing, anywhere - then there is only the iPad Wifi+3G. If you want books, pdf, rudimentary email/Internet, anywhere - then you can consider the Kindle DX.
  23. He means 3G mobile provided by Sprint or Verizon (can't remember they changed providers) for the life of the Kindle. But the browser in the Kindle DX/3 is pretty awful.
  24. http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/print/2010/11/lies-damned-lies-and-medical-science/8269 Really good profile of John Ioannidis.
