CFA Exam study guides - Suggestions & pointers
EdWatchesBoxing replied to Gopinath's topic in General Discussion
I am currently studying to retake Level 2. Level 1 was reasonable and I only used the CFA texts. Last year, I think I was burnt out and I had too much going on to study enough. However, I made the decision to use the Schweser books to study this year. I like seeing the clear language that goes straight to the point. With my added work duties, It helps keep my studying efficient. If you have time to "dig" then the CFA texts are probably OK. I don't know if this designation is useful to someone trying to get into finance. I decided to take these exams because I already working in the field. I came from an engineering/programming background, so I got my foot in the door by getting an IT job. After a while, I realized it was better to be closer to the money in a financial company. -

IMO, if Quebec wants the Bloc to represent their interests, that's fine. But you don't invite a separatist to a federal debate.

I think only the GTA will be voting liberal. The one mississauga riding that is not liberal is ours. I found out that back in 08, the liberal MP lost out to the Conservative candidate by less than 300 votes. I went out to the advance polls on good friday to get it done early. I am sure a lot of people have become scared of Iggy due to the GST hike quote commercial that the Conservatives love to put on high rotation.

Melissa Lee's real cute when she's wearing glasses. I used to hear that Fast money shit on CNBC when my desk used to be close to the traders' TV. Lee was the only reason why I would look up to the TV from time to time. Otherwise, I'm so glad I don't sit close to the traders anymore.

Coalition is a real possibility. Layton will be the only leader left standing. Harper will finally be gone. NDP will kill proposed corporate tax cuts. That's my take. Anyone else think the GST should have never been cut the 2%?

Canadian Military Joins Those Warning of Oil Shortages
EdWatchesBoxing replied to Swizzled's topic in General Discussion
It looks like we`ll eventually move on to Nat Gas in North America. Who knows when though. Here's the link to the Vancouver Sun article: http://www.vancouversun.com/technology/shortages+environmental+decline+could+create+global+quagmire+military/4630846/story.html -
I don't know if it's better run, but the results are definitely better with Sears Canada. Maybe their offerings are different enough that HBC is their main competitor and Wal-mart doesn't affect them as much. So like Turar said, it's easier for Sears in Canada to make money. I've heard that some Sears stores in the US are in really bad condition, but I think it's different up here. I don't mind shopping at Sears stores in the Toronto area.

Interesting, but Sears Canada isn't the problem at Sears holdings. Like others have said, just continue cleaning out the waste in the US and the numbers will reflect the clean up.

FFH Shareholder Dinner and AGM

Haha, this was a meet-up for investors. What did you expect? Oh shit, what a year to skip. Just came across the pics with the guests... -
So it looks like it was reviewed and they found out they should have reported.

Those 2 sites look nice. Especially the OdysseyRe one. Anyone know when it was redesigned? I still remember the rocket ship site.
-
Interesting. It looks liker their website was converted to ASP.NET Did they outsource development to a Microsoft shop? LOL

That's weird, they're talking about the rights subscription from last summer, but the PR was released today. I wonder if he still holds 11.2%

It's never very different, no matter where you look. Human emotions take hold of the masses. It sucks. -

That's at least 15-20 more years from them. I like LUK because they're in the casino business with hard rock biloxi, haha. -
Interesting. I love eating potatoes. I like baking fries at home.

I've noticed that I end up feeling extremely sick after eating too much fried food. I almost never eat it anymore. I remember eating KFC for dinner few years ago. I ended suffering the next day.

I recently discovered Redbreast and I like it a lot. http://www.lcbo.com/lcbo-ear/lcbo/product/details.do?language=EN&itemNumber=636845

Unless they've got money to burn, I can't imagine what people are thinking buying houses in Vancouver. It's bad enough in the GTA.

I've been doing push ups at least every other day for 7 years. It definitely works. I don't have pull up equipment, but that would really make you strong. I bought a heavy bag and a stand a few weeks ago. I love punching the bag. It's great stress relief. I take transit, so I walk to the bus stop and I walk to the far end of the train station. I think all the little things add up.

http://uk.reuters.com/article/2010/10/06/uk-economy-bankofcanada-idUKTRE69501W20101006?pageNumber=1 I know it's from October, but the BoC seems to be concerned about the exchange rate. The gov't allowed zero down, 40 year am for a while. They are moving in the right direction (getting rid of 35 year am), but I think it's already too late. Canadian mortgage underwriting may not be a loose as it had been in the US, but the banks don't worry about the high ratio mortgages. They are insured, mostly by CMHC, so most of the risk does not fall on the banks. The bulk of the risk has been transferred to CMHC. Although there are no official "zero down" mortgages, there are cash back mortgages that conveniently give 5%, just enough for the min down payment. Even at a 7 to 10% correction, many people will be suffering. With certainty of rising rates, many will be paying way more monthly on a mortgage that's larger than the perceived value of their house. I see the GTA market going similarly to the way it was in the 90s. A slow bleed for years.

Overstock?

Cardboard, well put . I'm extremely concerned for the people that are jumping into debt without being able to afford it in Canada. I wonder how many are living paycheck to paycheck. The way people seem to use credit baffles my mind. I was shocked by the Liberal ad where they will offer that green home tax credit, or whatever it is. Spend many 10s of thousands to get max 13,500. Would it help to teach kids in school about finance? The idea in the UK seems interesting, but I don't know if it would work. People seem to like their toys too much.

80 hour weeks! Yuck, I can't stand a 50+ hour week for more than a couple of weeks.
