  1. It's awful to see people voluntarily harm their financial health.
  2. Maybe I'm a little slow, but did Jobs just want to tell people that Buffett agreed with him? Even though he didn't. Did he just want to tell Buffett about the billions in cash that Apple was sitting on?
  3. I've been reading the blog since 2008! I like Garth's humour and his choice of pictures. I don't think housing will travel sideways while we wait for salaries to catch up to housing prices. In the GTA, where the average house is about 5.5 times average salary, I don't see how there won't be some sort of correction. Vancouver's in worse shape. I wonder what the house price/salary ratio was in the late 80s/early 90s. I just looked it up: http://www.torontohomes-for-sale.com/4a_custpage_2578.html So current home owners are not as screwed as those that were buying back then. But looking back to the mid 1970s, I'm sure that type of drop wouldn't be out of the question these days. Even a 10% will be really bad any one who put less than 10% in the last few years will have their equity wiped out. Well, except the one's that got the zero down/40 year ams. They'll just carry a mortgage much higher than the value of their house. They may not call it subprime lending in Canada, but people that can't afford the houses they are "purchasing" are being approved for mortgages. They just slap mortgage insurance on it up front and dump the guarantee on the tax payer through CMHC/CHT. EDIT: wow, they must have been smoking some really good stuff in the 80s.
  4. I haven't made any comments regarding the FBK situation, but I got out last week. I am glad to put this business behind me. I think Fairfax wanted out and needed to get the ball moving. I would have saved myself a lot of pain if I had just ignored FBK and bought CFX. Especially when the shit hit the fan in 2009. My biggest complaint is with myself. Hopefully I've learned enough to not make the same mistake in the future. I will continue to follow the other FBK thread because the discussion is extremely good. I have nothing to add there, so I'll just watch from the sidelines. <IV, great call on the warrants becoming disallowed!
  5. I'm on the bandwagon. I've started to get back into b-ball. Actually, not really, but watching Lin videos beats watching the craptors. Maybe i'll watch the knicks next time they're @ ACC.
  6. I just watched episode 2 of "On Freddie Roach." Wow, that was a very emotional episode.
  7. Russell Jr has some really quick hands. Too bad they're brittle, but yes, he could be a real force with his skills. I'm looking forward to the Nonito Donaire vs Vasquez Jr fight in a couple weeks. Also, Berto vs Ortiz. Michael Spinks lost that fight way before it even started! He was so scared. Tyson's "peek a boo" style was fun to watch. Mike Tyson's Punchout!!! was my favourite video game at the time. I was so determined to beat Tyson in that game. He was so hard to beat in that game. I played that game a lot. Hagler vs Hearns was a good fight, but have you seen Corrales vs Castillo 1? I think this is the best fight I've seen. Here's the final round:
  8. Sanjeev, which current fighters do you like the most? I was watching ShoBox on Friday, so I watch some new talent as well. Boxing is the only sport I watch regularly these days, so I tend to watch a lot of what's showing on Saturday nights. I think Mike Tyson is living a much better life now. It looks like he's beaten his demons. I'm glad he was inducted into the boxing HOF.
  9. That was a pretty good first episode. Very different from the 24/7. No narration, so you're just listening to Freddie Roach most of the time. It's interesting that it starts during the Khan vs Judah fight. He's doing what he loves.
  10. In the fifth picture, I'm guessing that's a picture of the young Muhammad Ali/Cassius Clay in the back. The place looks really cool.
  11. Some good points from racemize. I'm also a gamer, but my only current console is the Wii. The funny thing is that the last game I bought on it was a Call of Duty game: Modern Warfare 3! The hardware cannot compete with the 360 or the PS3, but there are some exclusives to the Wii that target the younger crowed like Mario Kart, Mario Galaxy, Zelda (actually I never outgrew Zelda and Skyward Sword looks awesome!) The lifecycle for the Wii is coming to close. The next gen console from Nintendo, Wii U (will be HD!), is coming out next year. I'm not sure when the next gen is coming out from Microsoft, or Sony. Wii U will be backwards compatible with the Wii games and you will be able to use the Wii controllers with the new console. Don't know if this will factor into your decision. One note about online gaming. If you are going to play online, Xbox Live is something extra you have to pay for, if I remember correctly. Some Wii games are Wifi compatible and you don't have to pay for anything else but your internet service. The games usually uses a crappy friend code system though. racemize, are you into FPS? do you have Battlefield 3? I watched some youtube videos, and I was briefly thinking of getting a new PC to support it! haha. Unless there are some free mini games I'm missing out on, downloading free games is possible, but illegal. As you may have noticed, I am a Nintendo fan boy. I may go and play a bit of Call of Duty now...
  12. In October, I visited Quebec City for the first time in over 20 years. I loved it there. Vieux-Quebec was lovely!
  13. IMO, Danica McKellar has gotten hotter as she's gotten older. Nice pic.
  14. This board is starting feel like a virtual version of how high school and university was for me...
  15. I took a bunch of CS classes and it was the same. Take a look at this site: http://www.mathdoesntsuck.com/bio/ She sat right next to me most of the time in Fall '95 when I took Linear Algebra. Strange thing though: Microsoft managed to hire a lot of cute women. I'm not sure from where, but they are good at seeking them out. Winnie Cooper was in your algebra class! Lucky you! In engineering school, most were guys in my class. Majoring in electrical eng made it even worse.
  16. "...might have been the last to fall, but that distinction provided little solace. " If you read the sentence to the end, I think Buffett was saying that Berkshire would have failed too.
  17. interesting discussion. This all tells me that people will have their preferences, but it can't hurt to look at things outside of your comfort zone. I believe in the fundamental approach, but work shows me the trading side of things. Interesting, but can be complicated at times. I see how Soros and WB can be viewed highly. They are both very competitive people. WB was thinking about his partners when he rolled everything into berkshire. Soros makes me think about the renaissance fund. That fund seems to have done really well long term, but haven't looked into it for a while.
  18. Marisa Tomei brings back many childhood memories. Rose has a good job. I really liked his interview with WB, but I think my fav of recent memory is the one with bill ackman.
  19. I also remember reading about the player deposit abuse months ago on the 2 plus 2 poker forum. I think it was around the same time Phil Ivey stated that he wouldn't play in the world series, or something like that.
  20. I read about Full Tilt today. Never deposited more than $100 there (for deposit bonus). Luckily, this was early on, around 2005. I had no problem taking out my initial deposit + money I won. Looking back, I'm glad I never attempted to make a serious run. I still play for small change, but not on Full Tilt. I guess casinos are safer places to poker. Makes me want to go to Brantford or Niagara!
  21. Sort of like the community's version of Dragon's Den! I don't have a clue of how this would work in practice, but I think it's a good idea. It would also be nice to have a charity/non-profit component to it. If a target return is hit, then a certain portion gets donated. A self-sustaining charity fund.
  22. How true. On one hand, I am amazed at all the progress made in technology. On the other, it's extremely sad how f**ked up the world still is.
  23. http://seekingalpha.com/article/269961-china-biotics-2009-revenue-is-70m-off Looking up the ticker on google finance led me to the link above. The title cracked me up. Especially since I skimmed through the financials on google first.
